This sermon centers on the profound truth that Jesus Christ is the Lord our Righteousness, the only basis for humanity's acceptance before God. Drawing from Jeremiah 23:5–6 and other Scripture, it emphasizes that human righteousness is inherently flawed—like filthy rags—while Christ's perfect, imputed righteousness, earned through His sinless life, substitutionary death, and resurrection, is the sole ground of salvation. The message underscores the believer's union with Christ, where His righteousness is credited to the bor again beliver, enabling eternal security, peace, and confidence in God's grace. It calls for a complete renunciation of self-justification and a joyful reliance on Christ alone as the mediator, surety, and source of all spiritual blessings. The tone is deeply pastoral, convicting, and comforting, inviting worship and trust in the sovereign, redeeming work of God in Christ.

The sermon titled "Christ Our Righteousness," primarily addresses the doctrine of the imputed righteousness of Christ as articulated in Jeremiah 23:6. Wayne Boyd argues that humanity is born in sin and can offer nothing but "filthy rags" before God due to our sinful nature. He highlights the necessity of Christ's righteousness for salvation, emphasizing that believers are clothed in His righteousness, which grants them acceptance before God. This is supported through various scriptural references including Ephesians, 1 Corinthians, and examples from the teachings of Jesus. Boyd illustrates the practical significance of this doctrine, asserting that knowing Christ as our righteousness leads to peace, confidence, and contentment for believers, who fully depend on His finished work for salvation rather than their own efforts.

Key Quotes

“The Lord, Our Righteousness... we are accepted in the Beloved, clothed in His righteousness.”

“The only reason we're righteous as God's people before God is because of Christ Jesus and his righteousness, his blood and his righteousness.”

What does the Bible say about Christ our righteousness?

The Bible teaches that Christ is our righteousness, as seen in Jeremiah 23:6.

The Scriptures declare that in order to be accepted by God, we must be clothed in the righteousness of Christ, as our own righteousness is like filthy rags. Jeremiah 23:6 proclaims this clearly, referring to the Lord as our righteousness, emphasizing that through faith in Christ's perfect obedience and sacrificial death, we are made righteous before God. This concept is echoed in many passages throughout Scripture, showcasing that our salvation is fully dependent on Christ's righteousness.

Jeremiah 23:6, Ephesians 1:6

How do we know imputed righteousness is true?

Imputed righteousness is a core biblical doctrine, confirmed in 2 Corinthians 5:21.

The doctrine of imputed righteousness teaches that the perfect righteousness of Christ is credited to believers. This is firmly grounded in 2 Corinthians 5:21, which states that God made Christ to be sin for us that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. This beautiful exchange highlights how God, in His grace, takes our unrighteousness and gives us Christ's righteousness, qualifying us to stand before Him. The truth of this doctrine underlines the necessity of relying on Christ alone for our justification.

2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 4:5

Why is Christ's righteousness important for Christians?

Christ's righteousness is crucial for Christians as it is the foundation of our acceptance before God.

For Christians, understanding that Christ's righteousness is imputed to us is paramount because it shifts our reliance from our flawed works to His perfect work. As stated in Romans 5:1, we are justified by faith and thus have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. It is only through Christ's righteousness that we can be assured of our position as accepted children of God. This truth brings comfort and security, knowing that our standing is not based on our imperfect attempts at righteousness but on the perfect righteousness of Christ.

Romans 5:1, Philippians 3:9

How can we be sure that we are clothed in Christ's righteousness?

Believers can be sure they are clothed in Christ's righteousness through faith in Him.

The assurance of being clothed in Christ's righteousness comes through faith in Him as our Savior. As Romans 10:9 explains, if we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved. This belief results in the imputed righteousness of Christ being applied to us. Therefore, we can rest assured in our acceptance with God, not based on our merit, but on the completed work of Christ and our union with Him.

Open your Bibles, if you would, to Jeremiah, chapter 22. The name of the message is, The Lord, Our Righteousness. Our Righteousness. Jeremiah, chapter 23. We'll read verses 5 and 6. See, we are born into this world, beloved, dead in trespasses and sins, and our righteousness is like filthy rags in the eyes of the Lord. We have no righteousness to offer up to God for our salvation, because everything we do is tainted with sin. Everything.

That's why we must have the righteousness of Christ. And in order to be accepted in God's presence, we must be clothed in the righteousness of Christ. Because the scripture says in Ephesians, we're accepted in the beloved. So God accepts us, in Christ and we are clothed with his righteousness. That's the wedding garment we read about in Revelation. That's the best robe we read about the prodigal son. Him being him being robed in the best robe is a picture of the righteousness of Christ that the Father Close us in the righteousness of Christ. It's absolutely wonderful. Absolutely wonderful.

So, Jeremiah, chapter 23, verses 5 to 6. Behold, the day has come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a branch. Now, this is a prophecy about the Lord Jesus Christ, about the Messiah. And he did this. I'll raise unto David a righteous branch. Look at that. Righteous. Oh, Christ. is the righteous one, the just one. We're all unrighteous. Look at this. David, a righteous branch and a king. See, Christ's a born king, isn't he? No man made him king. He's already born a king. He's king of kings and lord of lords. And he robed himself in flesh, became a man.

The word of God did that to save us from our sins. Look at this. And the king shall reign and prosper and execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days, Judah, look at this, I love it, here we go, shall. There's that little word we love. Brother Eric, if you're listening, there's that little word we love. Oh, look at that. Judah shall be saved. Look at that. And Israel shall dwell safely. Oh, I'll tell you what. The Israel God dwells safely in Christ, don't they? Oh, I'll tell you why.

And this is his name whereby he shall be called, the Lord our righteousness. Lord there, that's Jehovah. Oh my, the Lord our righteousness. See, we're accepted in the Beloved. We're clothed in His righteousness. And He is the Lord, our righteousness, isn't He? Oh, it's beautiful, Beloved.

Beloved of God, may God the Holy Spirit give us grace to know the Lord Jesus Christ. May we be strengthened by His grace through the proclamation of the fact that the Lord is our righteousness, and may it give confidence, may it give us confidence in the faith to just rest and trust in He who is our righteousness. He, who is in the last message we saw, has already accomplished our salvation 2,000 years ago. My, nothing is more sweeter, more comforting, or more beneficial to the souls of God's people than which is here revealed in the book of God. This is wonderful.

If God grants we sinners grace to worship his dear son as the Lord our righteousness, with the knowledge of that grace, great truth, we sinners, knowing that we have imputed to us the righteousness of Christ, oh my, that'll lead to everlasting contentment, won't it? What more do we need? What more do we need? We don't need anything more, do we? We need Christ, who is the Lord our righteousness. Oh, and in Christ we find everlasting comfort, everlasting satisfaction, everlasting peace for our souls. peace while we're here on earth and peace with Christ in eternity, beloved.

It's glorious. So let's look at this wonderful title. It says here in Jeremiah 23 6 in his day Judah shall be saved and Israel shall dwell safely and this is his name whereby he shall be called the Lord our Righteousness look at this wonderful verse look at this this wonderful title given to our great God the Lord our righteousness Let us look first And he who is our righteousness. It is the Lord the Lord is our righteousness and God is our righteousness, beloved.

The Word of God became a man, the Lord Jesus Christ, fully God and fully man. He's our righteousness. He lived the perfect life as our substitute, and then he died in the sinner's place as the great substitute of his people. So his life was a life of substitution, and his death is a death of substitution. And he's up in glory interceding for us right now. We don't need to go to no priest. We don't need to go to anyone else to confess our sins. We go to one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus.

Oh yeah. My oh my. Listen to what Robert Hawker says about this. The Lord in his glory is of his essence. He is the one. with the Father. God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are one. The three are one. In his personal glories, he is the Lord, thy mediator.

And in his relative glories, he is our righteousness, having assumed our nature by virtue of our union with him. Now, this is very important, our union with Christ. That's why he's called the Lord our righteousness. He saved us from our sins. And his righteousness is imputed to us. My, all that he is is our mediator and surety. He is for us. And we are in him for it's written, as he is, so are we in this world.

My. Beloved, we've been made righteous by Christ, not by anything we've ever done or ever will do. I'll tell you what, our religious works are like filthy rags in the eyes of the Lord. If we think that we can justify ourselves by anything we do, say, then we're just proud, self-righteous human beings, lost and dead in trespasses and sins. Hmm.

Let's read this wonderful title again. Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ. We see he's called the Lord Our Righteousness. Our Righteousness. My righteousness is like filthy rags in the eyes of the Lord, but when I'm clothed in the Lord, Our Righteousness, oh my, I'm accepted in the beloved. I'm accepted in Christ based upon nothing I've done. Ain't that glorious? Our righteousness.

Look, it's a fact. It's a fact. God calls him the Lord our righteousness. It's a fact. That's what he is. Our righteousness. Is Jesus Christ the righteousness of God? Yeah. Then we are the righteousness of God in him. Because we're in Christ. This is what God the Holy Spirit tells us here, that he is the Lord our righteousness. The only reason we're righteous as God's people before God is because of Christ Jesus and his righteousness, his blood and his righteousness.

In 1 Corinthians 1.30, the Holy Spirit through the pen of Paul tells us that Christ is made of God unto us righteousness, wisdom, redemption, sanctification. By virtue of his eternal Godhead, Christ is our righteousness.

Marvel at this. He is our righteousness in such a sure way and with such everlasting value and efficacy as no creature could be. Being redeemed by the blood of Christ, the blood of the incarnate God, the word of God made flesh, the Lord Jesus Christ, we have his righteousness. He is our righteousness, beloved. And it's imputed to us by the right of his redemptive work. And according to the good pleasure of God's will and purpose. We are Christ's purchased possession, and he purchased us with his precious blood. He obtained for us eternal redemption. Who did that? The Lord, our righteousness, God in the flesh.

My, it's wonderful. And Christ's righteousness is a perfect righteousness. He perfectly fulfilled the law of God. Perfectly. Perfectly. And it's counted towards his people. And that's remarkable. Because Christ is our righteousness. It's wonderful. Beloved God, it is the perfect, spotless righteousness that we born-again, blood-washed believers are clothed in. by God the Father according to the sovereign will and purpose of our great God look at look at Jeremiah 23 6 once again in that in his day Judah shall be saved and Israel shall dwell safely and this is the name whereby he shall be called the Lord our righteousness look at that and we see in this verse that we are told this is the name whereby he shall be called whereby the messiah shall be called the lord our righteousness it's because our righteousness can't do anything to save us if we are to be saved it's through the blood and righteousness of christ we see my oh my In Matthew 1.21, He came to save His people from their sins. Every single one that the Father gave Him. And you know what they're clothed in? The righteousness of Christ. You know what Christ is to them? The Lord, our righteousness. It's glorious. My.

And what is the one thing that God shows we sinners who are saved? He shows us that our righteousness, that we have tried to work and tried to work our way and gain favor with God, is absolutely worthless. And then the gospel presents to us the Lord, our righteousness, who accomplished our salvation. Talk about being strengthened by grace, eh, beloved?

Oh, my, it's wonderful. And we confess to God and to all men that Christ alone is our righteousness. He alone is our righteousness. Surely, shall one say, in the Lord have I righteousness and strength. That's what we have. We have righteousness through the one who is called the Lord our righteous, and his name is Jesus Christ. Beautiful. The redeemed on earth and the redeemed in heaven, all the church of the firstborn call the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord our righteousness. That's what he is to us. That's what he is. It's a title given to him here in Jeremiah 23, 6. Oh, do you know who else called him that?

Abraham, all the patriarchs, all the prophets, all the apostles. all the Old Testament saints, and the New Testament saints, and all the saints in glory from every age, they worshiped Christ alone as the Lord our righteousness. Isn't that glorious? It's glorious.

Now, when I was in religion, I didn't hear about this title. I didn't hear that Christ is the righteousness I need. I heard, well, do this and then you're saved. And now you go about establishing your own righteousness. They didn't say it that way, but they said, you got to do this now. See, I like what Eric Sunilaw said. They say, you start off. You start off. Oh, it's all grace. And then they end it with works. No. Nope. Nope. It's all Christ from beginning to end. He is the Lord our righteousness. Salvation is of who? The Lord. The Lord our righteousness.

Oh, it's beautiful. I'll tell you what. I'll tell you what. And it is God the Father who has accepted us in him. We are accepted in the beloved, accepted in the one called the Lord our righteousness, the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ. My. And again, I keep saying this all the time, but the wrath of God that was due us, the justice of God that demanded that we die, right, that we go to hell, oh my, has been appeased. It's been appeased. Our substitute died in our room and place, and his righteousness is now imputed to us. And who made us righteous? It's God who made us righteous. God himself.

Listen to this. Of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us, and this is speaking to him there as Christ, who of God is made unto us wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, that he that glorieth may glory in the Lord. See, if man has their own righteousness, they think, they go before God and say, well, I was a good person. And he says, no, you weren't. There's none righteous, no, not one. And they say, well, my righteousness is good. No, there's none righteous, no, not one.

And these sheep that are saved, the Lord's their righteousness. My son's their righteousness. My, oh my, oh my. Praise God for the shed redeeming blood of the Lord Jesus Christ that washed my sins away. If you're a believer, you can say that with me. Wash my sins away, isn't it glorious? Praise God for Christ's perfect righteousness, wherein I'm accepted by God in Christ, who is my righteousness. He is the Lord my righteousness, or the Lord our righteousness for all believers, right? Oh, it's wonderful.

So we who are the redeemed of the Lord, being convinced by God that all our righteousness are filthy rags before him, we cast them off, don't we? Oh, we cast them off. We say, Lord, I can't save myself. These works I've done to try to save myself are just absolutely worthless. And we cast ourselves upon the mercy of God, saying, God, be merciful to me, a sinner. Oh, my.

In Christ, who is the Lord our righteousness, is ointment poured forth. Oh, oh, he's so wonderful for the believer in Christ. And Lord Jesus, this wonderful truth that you are the believer's righteousness causes us to renounce all our personal righteousness and proclaim, I will go in the strength of the Lord our God, Lord the God. I will go in the strength of the Lord God. I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only. And my tongue shall speak of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long. Amen and amen.
