Philippians chapter 4, notice
verse 19. Philippians 4 verse 19. I quote
this verse quite often because it gives such comfort to the
heart of the sinner in need. But my God, my God, shall, not
maybe, not could be, shall supply, supply. And that word there,
supply, means satisfy. It means to fulfill all your
need. My God, Paul assures these believers,
my God, shall supply all your need, not according to your works,
not according to your merit. Not according to anything you
ever do or will do, but rather according to His riches. My God, He's rich. His riches
in glory. Heavenly riches. Spiritual riches. And it's always by, by the Lord
Jesus Christ. By the Lord Jesus Christ. So I'm entitling the message,
God Shall Supply. You in need, God shall supply all your need. This is the same message the
Lord delivered unto Abraham upon Mount Moriah. The Lord will provide the whole
of the land. God has provided. The same message
that David rejoiced in when he meditated upon the great shepherd
of the sheep in Psalm 23. Remember he said, the Lord is
my shepherd, therefore I shall not want, I shall not want any
good thing. And then we read over here another
Psalm of David. Oh, taste and see that the Lord
is good. Blessed is the man that trusteth
in Him. Oh, fear the Lord, ye His saints.
There is no want to those that fear Him. They that seek the
Lord shall not want any good thing." That makes me in my heart
want to seek the Lord, where all mercy is found, where all
blessings are found. Now Paul was especially dear
to these believers. Paul loved them, and they in
turn loved him. We see that in verse 1, don't
we? Therefore, my brethren, dearly beloved, and long for my joy
and my crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly, dearly beloved. Paul loved these people, he appreciated
them, and they appreciated him. These folks in Philippi, they
were privileged to hear the preaching of Paul. He says in verse 9,
those things which you both learned and received and heard. They learned some things through
the preaching of the gospel. Because they heard some things
through the preaching of the gospel. They have received some
things. And they had seen some things.
And he says, don't be just a hearer of the word, be a doer. And the
God of peace, the God of peace shall be with you. Now while Paul was in prison
at Rome, They sent a gift, a care package if you will, unto him
by the hand of their pastor. His name down here in verse 18,
Epaphroditus. But he says, I have all, or I
have received all, and abound. He said, I'm full, I'm full. Now what they sent exactly is
not given, but Paul rejoices in what he did receive, having
received this gift. from apoditis to things which
were sent from you, an odor? It's a sweet smell, a sacrifice. It's acceptable. And you know
what? God's pleased with it. God's
pleased with what you have done in taking care and seeing my
need. It seems like they were sending
many gifts to Paul before he was in prison. As it says in
verse 15, Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning
of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated
with me concerning giving, but only you. These folks supported
the mission work. They gave generously to supporting
Paul preaching when he went to Thessalonica. They sent and met
his need. You see, those who have freely
received, freely give to others, it is truly most blessed It is
more blessed to give than it is to receive. Now Paul sends
this letter back to them to express his thanks unto them, his love
for them, to encourage them to stand fast in the gospel. Turn
back to chapter 1, look at verse 27. Stand fast in the gospel. Look
at verse 27, Philippians 1. Only that your conversation be
as becometh the gospel of Christ, that whether I come and see you
or else be absent, I may hear of your affair, that you stand
fast in one spirit, one mind, striving together for the faith
of the gospel. Stand fast. Contend for the faith
once delivered unto the saints. And then in chapter 3, He writes
back unto them and tells them to rejoice in the Lord. Finally, my brethren, chapter
3 verse 1. Rejoice in the Lord. Rejoice
in the Lord. Look at verse 3, Philippians
3, 3. For we are the true circumcision, we worship God in the Spirit,
we rejoice in the Lord Jesus Christ, and we have no confidence
in the flesh. And then he encourages them to
count everything else loss. Verse 8, Philippians 3. For the
excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom
I have suffered the loss of all things, And I count them but
dumb, that I may win Christ, and be found in him, not having
my righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through
the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith, by
faith, the righteousness which is of God by the faithfulness
of the Lord Jesus Christ. He writes back them to tell them,
and to encourage them to rejoice in the Lord, to stand fast in
the gospel, and to assure them that God would abundantly and
eternally take care of all their need. As it says in verse 19,
Philippians 4 verse 19, but my God shall supply all your need. All your need. Now, four things
I want us to consider from this text. The first one is this,
our great need. Our great need. Do you see yourself
as a poor and needy sinner? Do you see any great need that
you have that is met in Christ? We are by birth and by our sinful
nature poor and needy creatures. We are, as the scripture describes
us, bankrupt sinners on the dunghill. That's pretty needy, isn't it?
Beggars on the dunghill. Over ten times we read in the
book of Psalms, David says of himself, I am poor and needy. In Psalm 40, verse 17, we read
this, I am poor and needy, yet The Lord thinketh upon me. Think about that. I'm poor and
needy. I need not to borrow from the
needs of others. How about you? I have plenty
of my own. Plenty of my own. We have plenty
of temporal needs, food, shelter, clothing, medical, physical,
education. We have as many temporal needs
as the hair of our head. Even in these things, we're totally
dependent upon the Lord Jesus Christ to supply our every need,
aren't we? Our Lord said, for without me,
you can do nothing. You can't get out of bed and
go to work tomorrow and earn. You can't even think right tomorrow
without God blessing you to do so. By the mercy and grace of
God, we may be able to work and earn a living to meet the need
of our family, but not without Him. You see, the apostle says
here in verse 13, I can do all things through Christ who is
my strength. And that's our hope. By His grace,
I'm gonna get out of bed in the morning, go to work, and earn
a living to meet the need of my family. But all our physical
needs pale in comparison to our one spiritual need. What is that one spiritual need?
I need Him. That's why the Apostle said,
oh, that I may win Christ and be found in Him. I need Christ. We are totally
helpless, absolutely dependent, shut up, to our great God to
supply our every spiritual need. Our need is great. Make no mistake
about it. What is it that we don't need? Maybe is a better question. We
need all things. We are totally dependent upon
Him, not only in the physical realm, but most especially in
the spiritual realm. You see, we need faith to believe
the gospel. Without faith, it's impossible
to please God. Yet by nature, we love darkness,
not light. We need faith to believe the
gospel, yet I cannot produce it. And by nature, I don't have
it. I must look to him to give me
faith. Faith is a gift of God. We need
life from the dead. I can't create that. I can't give that spiritual life. You have he quickened who were
dead in trespasses and in sin. Of his own will begat he us with
the word of truth. You see, we have a great need. We need spiritual life. Only
God can quicken. Only God can give life. We need
forgiveness from all our sin, iniquities, and transgression.
Pardon from sin. And yet I cannot produce that
in and of myself. The carnal mind is enmity against
God. In the flesh, no man can please
God. We need a justifying righteousness before God. I can't produce that
either. You see, I'm totally dependent
upon Christ. You see, all my righteousness
is, the best morality I have, God said it's filthy rags. Man in his best state is altogether
vanity. What is it that we don't need
before God? We need all things, don't we?
We need everything. So there is that great need,
right? Do you see that in your heart? You need faith. You need salvation. You need
a justifying righteousness. You need pardon. You need redemption. These things we cannot produce
in ourselves. I have a great need. Who's going to meet that need?
Aren't you glad that God said He will? He will provide. Second
point is this, the poor and needy sinner has a great, good, and
chief shepherd. We have a great helper, a great
provider, a great savior. It says here, my God, but my
God shall supply. My God shall supply. Now hold
your place there and find Hebrews chapter 4. Hebrews chapter 4. My God shall supply all your
need. Listen to this promise of scripture.
Hebrews 4 verse 16. Let us therefore come boldly
unto the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy, find grace
to help in time of need. What are we to do? Come boldly,
come with liberty, seeking mercy where it's found, that you might
find grace, obtain mercy, find grace to help in time of need. Our Lord said, all you who are
laboring and heavy laden, He said, come unto me, and I will
give you rest. I notice this phrase here, back
in verse 19, Philippians chapter 4, but, my God, my God, Now,
who is our God? Who is our God? The scripture says, I am God,
I am God, the Lord speaks from heaven, Jehovah said, I am God,
the only just God and Savior, beside me there is no other,
but my God. But my God, our God is in the
heavens. He's done whatsoever He has pleased. Who is this God of Paul? Paul
said, my God. He's the true and living God.
He's the almighty God. He's the holy God. Who is this
God of Paul? My God, my God. Well, did you
notice up here in Philippians chapter four, verse nine? He's the God of peace. You see
that? The God of peace shall be with
you. We have peace with God. Turn
one page, Colossians chapter one, verse 19. Colossians 119,
for it pleased the Father that in Him should all fullness dwell,
having made peace through the blood of His cross, by Him to
reconcile all things unto Himself. By Him, I say, whether they be
things in earth or things in heaven, and you that were sometimes
alienated, enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now have
He reconciled. He reconciled us to God in Christ. He's the God of peace. This God
of the Apostle Paul is a God of Holy Scripture. He's a God
of all peace. Not only that, He's a God of
all creation. God of all creation. He's the
Creator. Look at Colossians chapter 1,
right across the page. Colossians chapter 1, verse 16.
For by Him were all things created that are in heaven, that are
in the earth, visible, invisible, whether it
be thrones or dominions, principalities or powers, all things were created
by Him, by God our Savior. All things were created by Him
and for Him. He is before all things and by
Him all things consist. He's the God of peace. He's a
God of all creation. He's a God of providence. Of
Him and through Him and to Him are all things to whom be glory
both now and forever. He's a God of all salvation,
isn't He? The God of all salvation, for
there's no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must
be saved. He said, look unto me and be
ye saved. I am God, beside me there is
no other. He's the God of all peace. He's
a God of all creation. He's a God of all providence.
He's a God of all salvation. He's a God of all grace. All
grace. Turn over here to 1 Peter chapter
5 verse 10. He's a God of all grace. Verse
10. First Peter chapter 5 verse 10,
but the God of all grace who has called us unto his eternal
glory by Christ Jesus After that you have suffered a while make
you perfect establish strengthen Settle you who does that the
God of all grace to him be glory and dominion forever and ever
not only that he's called The God of all comfort. The God of
all comfort. Do you need comfort? He's the
God of all comfort. Find 2 Corinthians 1. 2 Corinthians
1, verse 3. He's the God of all comfort.
Blessed be the God. Blessed be God, even the Father
of our Lord Jesus Christ. He's the Father of mercies, and
He's the God of all comfort. Do you need comfort? found in
our God, who comforted us in all our tribulation, that we
may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort
wherewith we ourselves are comforting. For as the sufferings of Christ
abound in us, so also, so our consolation also abounds by Christ. He is our comfort. So he's the God of peace, God
of all peace, God of all creation, God of all providence, the God
of all salvation, the God of all grace, of all comfort, and
he's a God of all victory. Victory. Find 2 Corinthians chapter
2 verse 14. We are more than conquerors through
him that loved us. Thanks be unto God who has given
us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians chapter
2 verse 14. 2 Corinthians 2.14, Now thanks
be unto God, which always causes us to triumph in Christ, and
make manifest the savour of His knowledge by us in every place. Thanks be unto God, who always
gives us the victory. The Apostle writing in 1 Corinthians
15 said, Thanks be unto God, who has given us the victory
through our Lord Jesus Christ. Now, back to the text. Can you
say with the Apostle Paul, This is my God. I take it personal. Paul said personally, this is
my God, the God of Scripture, the God of Holy Scripture, the
God who is God. Paul said, this is my God. This is my God, sovereign, holy,
eternal, almighty, who is able to do all that He promised. I'm
persuaded, aren't you? That all that God has promised,
He's able to perform. He's able to perform and provide
all things for us. Who is able to save to the uttermost
all that come to God by Him. He's able to present us faultless,
keep us from falling and to present us faultless before the presence
of God's glory. But my God, now I have a great
need, who's gonna meet that need? My God, my God. Now watch this,
here's thirdly, third thing, great resources. We have a great
need, we have a great God, who has great resources. My God shall
supply all your need, filled to the full, all your need according
to his riches in glory. Now, not some of your need, but
all of your need. Notice it's singular. Fully,
freely, and eternally in His grand and glorious way. Turn back to the book of Colossians
and look at Colossians chapter 2 verse 9 and 10. Colossians
2 verse 9 and 10. For in Him dwelleth all the fullness
of a Godhead bodily, and in Him and you are complete. Complete
in Him, which is the head of all principality and power. In Christ dwells all the fullness
and believers are complete in Him. Completely redeemed, completely
justified, completely made whole. My God shall supply, and that
word means to satisfy. It means to perfect. It means
to fill to the full all your need. How generously and freely
the Lord does give to poor and needy sinners. I like that word
freely, don't you? Justified freely by His grace
through the redemption that's in the Lord Jesus Christ. God
who spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all,
how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? He does so, not according to
our merit. He shall supply all your need
according to His riches. Not according to our righteousness,
but according to His riches, His merit, His grace. His storehouse
of mercy can never be exhausted because the mercies of the Lord
are new every morning. You see, of His fullness have
we all received grace upon grace, grace upon grace, not according
to our works. Now I want you to turn to two
scriptures with me. Find first of all the book of 2 Timothy,
2 Timothy chapter 1, not according to our works, but according to His riches.
not according to our merit, but according to his riches. Now
this is 2 Timothy chapter 1 verse 7, where God had not given unto
us given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and
of a sound mind. Be not thou therefore ashamed
of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but be
thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the
power of God, who saved us, and called us with a holy calling,
not according to our works, but," here's that word, I love that
word, according. according to His purpose, according
to His grace. He saved us, He called us according
to His purpose, His grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus
before the foundation of the world. So He supplies all our
need according to His riches, of His grace, of His mercy. Now
find the book of Titus chapter 3. Titus chapter 3 verse 4. Titus chapter 3 verse 4, but
after that the kindness and love of God our Savior hath appeared,
hath toward man appeared, not, not by works of righteousness
which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us. by the washing of regeneration
and renewing of the Holy Spirit, which He shed on us abundantly
through Jesus Christ our Savior, that being justified by His grace,
we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life,
according to His rich mercy. He blesses us. Isn't that good news? The riches
of His grace. Now turn back to Ephesians chapter
one. My God shall supply all your
need according to the riches of His glory. But look what it
says in Ephesians chapter 1 verse 6, To the praise of the glory
of His grace, wherein He hath made us accepted in the Beloved,
in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of
sin, here's this word again, according to the riches of His
grace. His grace. Look at Ephesians
chapter 2 verse 4, but God who is rich in mercy for his great
love wherewith he loved us even when we were dead in sin hath
quickened us together with Christ by grace are you saved and has
raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly places
in Christ that in ages to come He might show the exceeding riches
of His grace and His kindness toward us through the Lord Jesus
Christ. For by grace are you saved in
Him." Turn one page to Philippians 3, Ephesians 3. When Paul prays
for this church, He says, for this cause I bow
my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the
whole family in heaven and earth is named, that he would grant
you according to the riches of his glory. to be strengthened
with might by his Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell
in your hearts by faith, that you, being rooted and grounded
in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the
breadth, the length, the depth, the height, to know the love
of Christ with passive knowledge, that you might be filled with
all the fullness of God. Now unto him that is able to
do exceeding, Abundantly, above all that we ask or think, according
to the power that works in us, unto Him be glory in the church
by Jesus Christ, Christ Jesus, throughout all ages, world without
end. He blesses us according to the
riches of His grace, the riches of His love, the riches of His
mercy. You see, His love never fails.
cannot fail because He is rich in mercy, He is rich in love,
His great love wherewith He loved us. The riches of His grace keep
flowing and flowing unto us world without end, never ending riches
of His glory according to the richness of His glory. Our God
is glorified in giving us richly. Our Lord gives abundantly out
of the riches of His grace and glory, but He also gives richly
to magnify what? His grace and His glory. Worthy
is the Lamb that was slain to receive all honor, glory, and
blessing, and power, both now and forever. Filled with all
the fullness of God, pictures are being in God, and God being
in us. Turn to John 17. You remember
this promise, John 17? filled with all the fullness
of God. John 17, verse 22, the glory
which thou gavest me, I've given them that they may be one, even
as we are one, I in them, thou in me, that they may be made
perfect in one, that the world may know that thou hast sent
me and hast loved them as thou hast loved me. I in them and
thou in me, My God shall supply all your need according, filled
to the full, according to the riches of His glory." You see,
Christ in you is what? The hope of glory. He says in
Colossians 3, our life is hid with Christ in God, filled to
the full. Someone gave this illustration,
and maybe it illustrates what I'm trying to say. And maybe
it's a poor illustration. But anyhow, you go down to the
beach and you take a bottle. And you take that bottle and
go down to the water's edge and you fill it full. There's a bottle. You put it down to the ocean
water and the water runs in. And it fills it to the full.
And then you cap it off. Then you take that bottle and
you throw it out in the ocean. There's the ocean in the bottle,
and then the bottle in the ocean. Christ in you, the hope of glory. See what that's trying to say?
Our life is hid with Christ in God. Christ in you, and you in
God. My God shall supply all your
need according to His riches in glory. All your need. Richly does He supply. Now, here's
the last thing. By. By something. By someone. You see that? By Christ Jesus. By the Lord Jesus Christ. The
great channel in which the Lord supplies our every need is by
the Lord Jesus Christ. We're always blessed in Him. Right? He's blessed us with all
spiritual blessings in the heavenly, in Christ Jesus. We're always
blessed by Him, His will, His purpose, His grace. We're always
blessed through Him, because of Him, in Him, through Him,
never apart from the Lord Jesus Christ. There is no mercy, there
is no salvation from God apart from The Lord Jesus Christ. Mark it
down. The glory of God shines in the
face of the Lord Jesus Christ. There is no mercy and no salvation
apart from the Lord Jesus Christ. Our Lord said, I'm the way, I'm
the truth, the life. No man come to the Father, but
by and through me. You see, Christ is all and in
all. The Father loved with the Son
and given all things into His hand. Now the Son has all things,
and you know what? We have all things in Him. We're
heirs of God and joint heirs with the Lord Jesus Christ. We
have an inheritance that's incorruptible, undefiled, that fades, not away. How does the Lord give us all
things? How does He supply every need? By giving us Christ Himself.
You have Him, and if you're found in Him, you have everything.
We read in Scripture, 1 John 5, He that hath the Son, has
what? Life. Salvation. You have Him. No wonder
the Apostle said, Oh, that I may win Christ and be found in Him. In Him. He that hath the Son
hath life. Now, is He enough? Is He enough? If He's all you have, you have
enough. You have everything. The Lord
Jesus Christ is all you have. You have everything God has in
store for His church. But of him are you in Christ,
who of God is made unto us wisdom, righteousness, sanctification,
and redemption. According as it is written, he
that would glory, let him glory only in the Lord. Turn back to
1 Corinthians chapter 3, look at this. 1 Corinthians chapter
3, verse 21. Verse Corinthians chapter 3,
verse 21. Therefore let no man glory in
men, for all things are yours. You see that? All things are
yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world, life
or death, or things present or things to come, all are yours
and you are Christ. You belong to Christ, and Christ
is God. The Father loves the Son, giving
all things into His hand. We have all spiritual blessings
in the heavenlies in the Lord Jesus Christ. Now, one last point. Look back at Philippians chapter
4, verse 20. Now, who gets the glory? Who gets the glory for supplying
all our need? Well, it's most obvious, isn't
it? Verse 20, Now unto God our Father
be glory for ever and ever. Amen. God gets all the glory,
and rightly so, doesn't He? Do God be the glory, great things
he hath done? Let me read this to you, familiar
with you, but over familiar to you rather. In Revelation chapter
one, we read unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sin
in his own blood, and made us kings and priests unto God and
his father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Isn't that the desire of your
heart? Those who have all their need met according to the riches
of His glory say, to God be the glory." Don't you? In your heart?
Magnify the Lord? You see, those who seek the Lord
Jesus Christ shall not want any good thing. That makes me in
my heart. That's the promise of Scripture.
That makes me in my heart want to seek mercy where it's found.
To seek salvation where it's found. In the Lord Jesus Christ. Oh ye that fear the Lord. Back
to Psalm 34. There's no want to them that
fear him. The young lion do lack and suffer
hunger, but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good
thing. My God. shall supply all your
need according to his riches in glory by the Lord Jesus Christ. That's the gospel. That's the
gospel message in Christ's salvation.
