Luke chapter 22. If you look at verse 19 and verse 20, I know this is familiar ground, and you who have been believing the Gospel for many, many years, this is familiar to you, but it's always good to go back over things we already know. And when the Lord Jesus Christ assembled with His twelve apostles, to fulfill the Passover feast. In verse 19, he instituted the Lord's table and he took bread. We know it has to be unleavened bread because they were supposed to observe this feast of unleavened bread for seven days.
And he gave thanks. Now, that ought to be the theme of believers' heart. Not only to worship Him, but to give thanks. We do give thanks, and everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." So he took the bread, he gave thanks, and then he broke the bread.
And he gave unto them, saying, this is my body, which is given for you. Given for you. Now this bread didn't actually become his body. but it symbolizes his broken body because of our sin. This is my body which is given. The Lord gave himself for us to sacrifice for sin. My body without sin, without stain, my body which is given. In the book of Hebrews, we read about that God prepared him a body. My body which is given for you. This is substitution, satisfaction is given for you. And he said to do this, to do this because he said so. This do, this do, this do. Not to be saved, not to be justified, not to be sanctified, but this do in remembrance of me. Remembering who he is and what he has done. Likewise, also the cup. After supper saying, this cup is the new covenant. The old covenant's put away. The new covenant, the new testament, in my blood, God bought us with his own blood, which is shed for you.
Now think about that, who this is. what he has done for us. It is a delight to remember the Lord Jesus Christ for his people. It's not a burden. So I'm using for title to this message, this due in remembrance of the Lord Jesus Christ, this due in remembrance of me, of him. This is the way the Lord has ordained for his church and instituted for us to remember his great and glorious sacrifice for us or for you. Who needs a substitute? Sinners. Who needs grace? Those who are guilty. And we need this substitute to satisfy God's law and justice for us.
We read in the book of Hebrews so many times about the blood when He by Himself purged our sin with His own blood. And then He obtained eternal redemption for us with His own blood. By the one offering, He has perfected forever them that are sanctified. The Lord Jesus Christ is not only honoring this Passover feast as the law of God commanded, but He's also going to die for our sins according to the Scriptures. According to the Scriptures.
Because we're so frail and sinful and prone to forget, it just amazes me as I read this morning verse 24 in Luke 22 verse 24 and when the Lord They assembled together on this solemn Passover feast. And the Lord said, now I've fulfilled that. Now I'm going to institute the Lord's table. And this DM remembers to me. And the next thing we read about their strife among them, who's going to be the greatest in the kingdom of God.
How frail and weak we are. No wonder he said, you do this remembering me. Knowing how prone we are to forget. how we are redeemed from our sin with his blood. The Lord gives unto us this plain, and I use the word simple, not in a demeaning way, but it's a simple thing. He uses simple elements, bread and wine, to represent his broken body and shed blood. and His great sacrifice for us.
Now the Lord Jesus Christ, make no mistake, He's our perfect Mediator. He's our perfect High Priest. He's our perfect Mediator and Savior that sent of God. He cannot fail. He sent of God and He is God. He perfectly represents us to the Father as his beloved bride without blemish and without spot.
And he ever lives right now to intercede for us as our great high priest. Seeing we have a great high priest that has entered into the heavens, let us draw near with a true heart. He loved the church and gave himself for it. Then he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that it should be holy and without blemish.
How powerful and prevailing is the blood atonement of Christ. He presents us faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy. And then Paul writes this in the body of his flesh through death to present you holy, unblameable, unreprovable in his sight. I'd say the blood atonement of Christ is effectual, powerful, prevailing.
Our blessed Redeemer took upon Him our flesh, apart from sin, that He might honor and magnify His own holy law. And He did so in body, soul, spirit, perfectly in every way. In every motive, every thought, every deed, he honored the law of God. And he's doing that for us. Honoring the law of God for us. Establishing a perfect righteousness for us. Our Lord said, I didn't come to destroy the law or the prophets, but I came to fulfill all things. All things. And he did so. So much so that the Father speaks from heaven and says, this is my beloved Son in whom I'm well pleased. He was obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
This is what we read in these verses. The Lord observed the last Passover that He might be our effectual Passover and our complete atonement for our sin. Now we read, I want you to turn and mark this in your Bible. Turn to 1 Corinthians, 1 Corinthians chapter 5. Verse 7. If you don't have this marked, you need to mark it. 1 Corinthians 5, verse 7. 1 Corinthians 5, verse 7. Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump. Purge out that old leaven of works, deeds, merits. Cast them out, that ye may be a new lump.
As you are unleavened, as you are unleavened, that is in Christ, we're unleavened, we're without sin in Him. For even Christ, our Passover, is sacrifice for us. Christ is our Passover. So we don't observe that Old Testament Passover feast because Christ, He is our Passover.
But we do observe the Lord's Table because the Lord has commanded us to do so. Now, as we read down through these verses, the Lord Jesus Christ and his disciples, verse seven down to verse 13, came to Jerusalem to observe this last Jewish feast of the law as God commanded. You can go back and read about it in Exodus chapter 12, Exodus chapter 13.
But one of the things I noticed here as he told Peter and John to go and find a man, prepare everything, And notice carefully how his great deity and total Godhead is put on display before us. The Lord knows all things because he has ordained all things for us.
They went and found just as he said. Just as he said it came to pass. Knowing the God of all his work from the beginning, the Lord told them where to go, who they would meet, how they would find this large upper room already furnished, and there to observe the Passover. He said, all things are ready, come and dine, come and dine. And they found, as they went, they found just as he said, every word God has spoken, every promise that he has given shall be fulfilled. Not one word will fail, not one word. Every promise God has given unto us, his people, cannot fail, but will be completely honored and fulfilled. I often think of this scripture, and I quote it quite often, but I can't do that anymore, so I wrote it down. The last words of Joshua, you think of all that Joshua's been through.
He was in that Egyptian bondage for all the years of his life until he was delivered by the blood on the door The firstborn would die except for the blood upon the door and then the substitute died. Joshua was with that crowd that walked through the Red Sea on dry ground and watched Pharaoh's army perish. Joshua was the one who stayed with them 40 years in the wilderness as they went around and around and around. And the whole generation perished. But Joshua and Caleb, Caleb and Joshua, the Savior and the faithful dog, they entered into the promised land. Now here's what Joshua said as he dies.
Behold this day, he said, I'm going the way of all the earth and you know in all your hearts and all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things which the Lord your God has spoke concerning you all are come to pass, not one word has failed.
That's true of everything that God has promised his people. Not one word shall fail. We have, Peter writes about, We have the exceeding great and precious promise that are given unto us. All the promises of God in him are yes, and in him an amen, and to the glory of God by the Lord Jesus Christ. Abraham was fully persuaded, and every believer is too. Abraham was fully persuaded that all that God has promised, he's able to perform. God is good on his word. God is good on his word.
They found just as the Lord had said, the Lord Jesus Christ observed the Passover feast and instituted the Lord's table with his 12 apostles. Even Judas was there. Did the Lord know that Judas was a traitor? Yes, he did. He was a reprobate from the beginning, and the Lord used him for his own purpose, and Satan entered into him and inspired him, and he sold out on the Lord. But notice, as the Lord institutes the Lord's table, he doesn't kick Judas out of the room and say, no, you can't partake of this.
He passes out that bread and that wine to all 12 of those men. Now here's a point I would make on that. We're to examine ourselves and then eat the bread and take the wine. I'm not to examine you, you are not to examine me. The Lord himself who knows the hearts of all men didn't exclude Judas. Judas excluded himself as he betrayed the Lord Jesus Christ. So we don't put a fence around the Lord's table and say, well, you don't belong here, and you've not done this, and you've not done that, and you've not measured up here, and you've not measured up there. I don't know your heart.
God does. He says to those who believe the gospel, this do in remembrance of me. Paul writes, let a man examine himself, and so let him eat that bread and drink that cup. Now, none of us are worthy in ourselves, but we are in Him. He is the worthy Lamb. The only requirement to partake of the Lord's table is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
If you're a believer, you're commanded to partake of this table to remember how your sin was put away. Every believer entertains no other idea how he is justified We don't entertain any other idea how we're justified before God but by his blood. His blood cleanses us from all sin. You remember this from Romans 5, but God commanded his love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us much more than being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
So always of him. and through Him and to Him, isn't it? I love what it says down here in verse 15. Luke 22 verse 15, With desire, I have desire to eat this Passover with you. A desire. Our Lord's desire is toward His people. I want to eat this Passover with you. His desire to save us by His grace His desire was one to redeem us by his blood. His desire was to glorify God in doing all things for us. All that the Lord desires and wills to be done, if he desires it and wills it to be done and purposed it to be done, will it be done? Absolutely. Always. Always. It shall be fulfilled, he says in verse 16, I will not any more eat thereof until it be fulfilled." That's the last Passover. The Lord fulfilled the Passover and He's not going to observe another Passover. It shall be fulfilled.
The holy law of God, once it is honored and fulfilled, is brought to an end. Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believe it. Paul writes this, knowing that a man, a sinner, is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ. Even we have believed in Jesus Christ that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, not by the works of the law, for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. He fulfilled the law of God for us, and in doing so brought in everlasting righteousness that he freely gives unto his people. How righteous do I need to be to stand before God as righteous as God? How can that be? Only as I stand in Christ, who is the Lord, our righteousness. Blessed is that man to whom the Lord imputeth righteousness without, without works.
For I say unto you, verse 18, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God shall come. In that new kingdom, that new heaven and new earth, will continually feast around the table of His grace. And saying, worthy is the lamb that was slain to receive all honor, glory, blessings now and forever and ever. Amen.
And verse 19, and he took bread after observing the Passover feast, according to the law of God, honoring the law of God for us. Now he institutes the new covenant. which is the eternal covenant. And he took bread, unleavened bread, and he gave thanks.
He gave thanks. What a blessing it is. to have a heart and a desire to give thanks unto the Lord, a heart of gratitude. That should be something that is always present in the heart of a believer, a heart of gratitude, a heart of thanksgiving. And everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. And he took bread and he gave thanks and he break it All this is showing us his coming and his dying.
He's the bread from heaven. Your fathers, they said, Moses gave us that bread from heaven. He said, no, no, God gave you that bread from heaven. But he said, I am the true bread of heaven that cometh down. A man may eat thereof and never hunger and never thirst. The Lord give us that bread. And he took bread signifying his humanity unleavened bread, signifying his sinlessness, had no sin, knew no sin, and did no sin. And then he gives thanks. Don't we give thanks to the Lord for his coming, for him, his obedience unto death for us? And he break it. He bear our sin in His own body on the tree.
All the sin of God's elect. You think of the weight of that sin. The load of that sin. All the sin of God's elect. Your sin. All the sins of God's people gathered together on the Lord Jesus Christ. You know, I think about this. There were three hours of darkness on the cross. And I kind of, the Lord just shut the sun off. But I think about this, all the sin of God's people over all the ages gathered together upon the sacrifice appointed of God and so great and enormous with the darkness and death of that sin that blotted the sun out. That blotted the sun out.
It break his body. Now, as I've often said to you, people often talk about the wicked things that men did, and they did wicked things. I mean, they beat him. They mocked him. They put a crown of thorns on his head, crushed it down on his head. They gave him a flimsy reed and put a purple coat on him, and they bowed the knee and said, Hail, King. They mocked him in his kingship. They mocked him every way. He suffered greatly at the hands of men. They whipped his back.
They put him on a cross, a wooden tree that he grew. He made the tree. He made the nails, the ore from which they made those nails. And he submits unto them. The Lord could have walked away. He did on other occasions. But he said, my meat is to do the will of him that sent me. This is God doing.
And the point I'm making here, it's not what wicked men did that's our hope. They did some wicked, terrible things. But it says in the book of Acts chapter four, they only did what God determined before to be done. It's not what they did, it's what God was doing at the cross. That's our hope.
They, Pilate, Pontius Pilate, and the Jews, and the Gentiles, were all gathered together against the Lord. But they couldn't make our sin to meet on Him. But God did. God made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. Isn't this a marvelous thing? God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law.
And the load of sin, as he bare our sin in his own body on the tree, he carried the load. He carried the load. And it broke his body out. Not a bone of him wasn't broken, we know that, but he break this bread symbolizing that our sin was laid upon him. So he took this bread, symbolic of his broken body, And he gave it unto them, saying, this is my body. Or this represents my broken body, which is given, given. No man, he said, takes my life. I lay it down of myself. I take it up again. This commandment have I received in my father.
As he gave, freely gave. Himself as a sacrifice for our sin. He freely gives this bread to them. They didn't contribute anything to it. He freely gave to them. And we're justified freely by His grace, aren't we? He gives everything that we need. God who spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also? Freely, freely, I love that word, give us all things. I will love you free.
And then he said, this do, this do, do this. When Paul institutes there in the church at Corinth, he said, I received of the Lord these instructions and I give it unto you the same night in which the Lord was betrayed. He took bread and gave thanks. This do, not to be saved, not to be more saved, This do simply in remembrance of him, remembering who he is. Who is this one who is dying as a sinner substitute?
Call his name Jesus. We had this on the radio this morning. I hope some of you heard it. It was a radio broadcast. It was actually on time this morning, 8.30 in the morning. Call his name Jesus, he shall save his people from their sin. Why was he called Jesus? Because it means Savior. Savior. He is the Savior of his people. And all that was done that it might be fulfilled, which is spoken by Isaiah the prophet, that a virgin shall conceive and bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Emmanuel. What does that mean? God with us. So who is the Lord Jesus Christ?
He's Savior. He's God. As Paul writes in Titus, He's God, our Savior. He's Lord Jesus Christ. He's the Christ of God. He's the anointing of God. He is Lord. Who made Him Lord? We hear people in religious circles, well, I made Jesus Lord. I made Jesus my Lord. You can't make Him Lord.
God has declared Him to be Lord and Savior from all eternity. God hath made that same Jesus whom you crucified, God hath made Him both Lord and Christ. God beat you to it. He is the decreed Messiah, the Christ of God, the anointed of God, in all of His office. He's the Lord. He's Jesus, the Savior. who cannot fail to save his people, this is the one that we're remembering. And he's the Christ of God. What does that mean? That means he's the Messiah.
Remember the Lord met that woman at the well who came to draw water, and the Lord met her and said, you drink of that natural water, you'll thirst again. But whosoever drinketh of the water that I give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. And she said, Lord, give me that water. I want that water. That's what I want. I want that water.
But she said later on that chapter, she said, we know that when Messiah comes, He'll show us all things. Messiah is the Christ. He'll show us all things. And the Lord said to her, read it in John chapter 4, I that speak to thee am He. I am that I am. Same one that speaks to Moses there on Mount Sinai. I am that I am. So the Lord Jesus Christ is the anointed one of God. He is the Messiah.
That's so sad. Think about this. He came into His own people, His own nation, and everybody with somebody said, thumbs down. He came into His own, His own received Him not. Them old poor, pitiful Jews are still looking for the Messiah. He's already done come. That's not good English, but a good theology. He's already come. He's already accomplished salvation for His covenant people. Don't look for another.
He's the only Christ of God, the one Son of God. He's the certified, official Christ of God. In order in all of His office as the prophet of God to tell us the way, He represents God to us. He is that prophet that He promised Moses that He would raise up, that prophet. He is the prophet to reveal God's will to us. He is the anointed prophet. He is the anointed priest to represent us unto God.
That's what the priest does. We don't go around looking for an earthly priest to confess our sins to and then he has the power to remit them. Tommy rot. That's foolishness, isn't it? Christ is our great high priest. Read the book of Hebrews. Seeing we have a great high priest that is seated in the heavenlies. He said, come boldly unto me. come unto the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy, find grace to help in time of need. So He is our anointed Messiah, Christ, our prophet. He is our priest. He is our mediator. He is our intercessor. We don't look for anyone else.
We look to the Lord Jesus Christ. So He's prophet, priest, and what's that last one? Prophet, priest, and what's that last one? King, right? King. I was going to see if you were listening. He is the king. He is the anointed king. God said, was it Psalm 110? I've set my king upon my... No, that's Psalm 2. I've set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. He's God's king. He's king of kings and Lord of lords.
This is the one that we're remembering when we partake of these simple elements. The unleavened bread. When you chew it, you'll break it. signifying that he suffered for our sin. And then he said, this do in remembrance of me. Likewise, also the cup after supper saying, this cup is the new testament. And that word testament means covenant. This is the new covenant in my blood which is shed for you. Now there was that covenant of works. But the blood of bulls and goats cannot put away sin. It pictured substitution. It pictured the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
But this blood here of the new covenant, this blood here is an eternal covenant. That old covenant had a beginning when God gave that covenant to Moses. This covenant here has no beginning. It is the eternal covenant. the God of peace that brought again from the dead the Lord Jesus Christ, that great shepherd of the sheep to the blood of the everlasting covenant. This covenant here is as old as God himself. That's how old this covenant is. It's a covenant in my blood. You see, it's just not You know, those old Romans, they crucified thousands and thousands of Jews. I mean, thousands of them. That was a common capital punishment of the Roman government. They killed thousands, they crucified thousands of Jews. Their blood never put away one sin.
But the blood of this man, God's lamb, God's sacrifice for sin, it's who he is, that gives value to his blood. God bought the church with his own blood. And this wine represents his blood, the blood of the covenant, the blood of the covenant. We are redeemed, Peter says, we are redeemed with the precious blood of Christ. not with silver and gold, not with tradition of our father, but with the precious blood of Christ as of a lamb, foreordained before the foundation of the world. This cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is shed for you. Now what does that for you signify? What does that for you mean?
Substitution. He was wounded for our transgression, bruised for our iniquity, and with his stripes we are healed. Substitution, satisfaction. My pastor used to always tell us two words describe the gospel, Christ our substitute, who died in our room and in our stead, who satisfied God's law and justice for us. Learn those two words and learn the gospel. Substitution, satisfaction. So he took bread, gave thanks, break it, gave it unto them saying, this is my body which is given for you. Substitution, this do remembering me.
Likewise, also the cup after supper saying, this cup is the new covenant, ordered in all things, and is sure in my blood, the blood of bulls and goats never put away sin. His blood puts away our sin forever, which is shed, given for you, substitution, satisfaction.
