to the Hebrew believers. I can't
think of anyone more appropriate to write the book of Hebrews
as the Holy Spirit leads him than Paul who said, I'm a Hebrew
of Hebrews. But in this book to the Hebrew
nation, Paul sets forth several things. I'll give them to you
just briefly. But he sets forth in this book
how all of the promises of the Old Testament and all of the
prophecies and types in the Old Testament are fulfilled in the
Lord Jesus Christ. All of them. The Old Testament
has one message from Genesis to Malachi, and that is the Messiah
is coming. The Messiah is coming. Our Lord
confirmed that when he said to the Pharisees, you search the
scriptures, they are they which testify of me. Old Testament
scriptures. Secondly, the book of Hebrews
sets forth the superiority, the excellency of our Lord Jesus
Christ, Jesus of Nazareth over angels, over Moses, over the
law, over the tabernacle, over all the priests, the superiority
of Jesus Christ, His excellency, then all things He might have
preeminence. And thirdly, this book of Hebrews
establishes the end, the end of the Old Testament priesthood,
the end of the Old Testament sacrifices, the end of the Old
Testament where sacrifices were offered
and incense was burned. It is no more. He takes away
the first and establishes the priesthood of Christ, which is
a priesthood not after the order of Aaron, but after the order
of Melchizedek, a priest forever, having no beginning or ending
of his priesthood. And of course, the blood of Christ
puts an end to all blood sacrifices. In Hebrews it said, if these
blood sacrifices offered on Old Testament altars, if they could
put away sin, they would have ceased to have been offered.
Well, that's exactly what Christ's sacrifice did. It put away sin. So it's offered one time. One
time. And then in the book of Hebrews,
the everlasting covenant, God is a covenant God. He made a
covenant with Adam, made a covenant with Noah, made a covenant with
Abraham, made a covenant with David. But this covenant with
Christ is called the everlasting covenant. And this everlasting
covenant in Christ Jesus is the true glory of God and brings
to the people of God the true rest. And all of these other
covenants are but types. This is the covenant, the everlasting
covenant. And the key word in this book,
and I want you to get your pen, and I want you to mark five scriptures. The key word in this book of
Hebrews is the word better. Hebrews 1-4, talking about Christ
being so much better than the angels. Underscore that or put
a mark by it. He's better than the angels.
That's what this book is all about. It tells about the Old
Testament prophecies, pictures, types, patterns, worship, sacrifices,
everything. Christ is better. Better. All right, turn to Hebrews 7,
19. In Hebrews 7, 19, now mark this. For the law made nothing
perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope. There it is,
a better hope. Christ is a better hope. The
bringing in of a better hope did by the witch we draw nigh
to God. We're accepted in the beloved.
God, we can come boldly before the throne of grace because we
have a better hope. The Lord didn't make anybody
perfect, but Christ did. He perfected forever them that
are sanctified by one offering. Alright, Hebrews 7, 22, same
chapter. By so much was Jesus made a surety
of a better testament. The word testament is covenant.
The Old Testament is the old covenant, the old covenant. The New Testament is the new
covenant in Christ Jesus, and it's a better covenant. You don't
want back onto that law of days and sacrifices and priesthood
and laws that can't make anybody perfect. This is a better covenant.
That covenant says, do and live. This covenant says, believe and
live. He's done it. He's paid the price. All right.
Hebrews 9, verse 23. Hebrews 9, verse 23. Verse 22 says, almost all things
by the law was purged with blood. Moses sprinkled the tabernacle,
the vessels, without the shedding of blood, there's no remission.
That's the blood of lamb sacrificed in the Old Testament. It was
therefore necessary that the patterns of things in heaven
should be purified with these. The patterns were purified with
these sacrifices. But the heavenly things, what
are the heavenly things? He has blessed us with all heavenly
things, heavenly blessings, justification, sanctification, redemption. But
the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. Justification is by the blood
of Christ. Sanctification by the blood of
Christ. Eternal life by the blood of Christ. These Old Testament
things were purified and sanctified by the sprinkling of the blood
on the hyssop. In type. But the heavenly things
are purified with better sacrifices of the blood of Christ. Better,
better. That's what the whole book's
about. Turn to Hebrews 12. Hebrews 12, 24, look at this. In verse 22, he says, you've
come unto Mount Zion. Hebrews 12, 22. You've come unto Mount Zion,
unto the city of the living God, the heaven of Jerusalem, to an
innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church
of the firstborn. Who is the firstborn? Christ.
which are written in heaven, their names are written in heaven,
to God, the judge of all, to the spirits of just men made
perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant, and the
blood of sprinkling that speaketh better things than that of Abel. Abel came with his blood sacrifice
and offered it before God. The lamb was slain, the blood
was shed. God had respect to Abel and to
his sacrifice. Because Abel was looking to the
Lamb of God who would come and fulfill these pictures and types
and prophecies. And Christ's blood speaks better
things than that of Abel. Much better. And that's the key. And before we go back to our
text, let's turn to the book of Proverbs. The book of Proverbs,
chapter 8. And this is who we're talking
about, our Lord Jesus Christ in Proverbs chapter 8. You know,
if a person thinks little of Christ, he's not taught of the Spirit
of God. If a person thinks much of Christ, he's still not taught
of the Spirit of God. But when a person in his heart
is able to give Christ all glory and all preeminence and all praise,
He's taught of God, and that's what Solomon does here. Christ
is all and in all. He has all preeminence. The Father
loves the Son. He's there. It's the kingdom
of His Son. And look at Proverbs 8, verse
23. I was set up from everlasting,
from the beginning, wherever the earth was. When there was
no depth, I was brought forth. When there were no fountains
abounding with water, Before the mountains were settled, before
the hills, I was brought forth. Who's he talking about? Talking
about Christ our Lord, Jesus of Nazareth, Christ our Lord,
Son of God. While as yet He had not made
the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust
of the world, when He prepared the heavens, when God prepared
the heavens, I was there. When He set a compass on the
face of the deep, of the depth, when He established the clouds
above, when He strengthened the fountains of the deep, When he
gave to the sea his decree, remember the decree, you go this far and
no further? Kept the sea in balance. That
the water should not pass his commandment when he appointed
the foundations of the earth, then I was by him. What does that bring to your
mind? In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God, Christ speaking. I was by Him as one
brought up with Him. I was daily His delight, rejoicing
always before Him." There can't be anyone but Christ. And that's
what we're talking about, Paul's talking about here in the book
of Hebrews, is our Lord Jesus Christ. He's better, more excellent,
superior. And all preceded Him, giving
Him a name above everything. That is the name of Jesus Christ.
Every knee will bow and confess that he's Lord. All right, verse
1 of Hebrews 1. God, who at sundry times and
in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the
prophets. We're talking about the Old Testament.
As I pointed out this morning, who were these prophets? Well,
Abraham. Noah was a prophet. He was a
preacher of righteousness. Abraham, Moses, David. Isaiah,
Jeremiah, Elijah, these were prophets. And God spake to our
fathers by the prophet. What did he speak? Well, our
Lord told us. He said, Moses wrote of me. Let
me show you a scripture here in Acts chapter 10, verse 43,
that gives us the answer to that question. Of whom did the prophet
speak? What was the prophet's message?
Look at Acts 10, verse 43. To him, well, let's read verse
40. Him God raised up the third day,
talking about Christ, and showed him openly, not to all the people,
but unto witnesses chosen before God, even to us who did eat and
drink with him after he rose from the dead. And He commanded
us to preach unto the people, to testify that it is He which
was ordained of God to be the judge of the quick and the dead,
Christ Jesus. And here's the verse now, verse
43. And to Him give all the prophets witness, all of them, that through
His name, whosoever believeth in Him should receive remission
of sins. God spake to our fathers by the
prophets. He spoke to our fathers with
the prophets, and these men spoke to them of Christ." Christ was
their message, to Him they gave witness. How did the prophets
speak? Well, they prophesied, they declared
what will be. I told you this morning Moses
in Deuteronomy 18, you can turn over there with me if you will,
Deuteronomy 18, Moses said in verse 18, of Deuteronomy 18, Moses says,
I will raise them up a prophet from among their brethren like
unto you, like unto Moses. And I'll put my words in his
mouth, and he'll speak unto them all that I shall command him,
and it shall come to pass that whosoever will not hearken unto
my words which he shall speak, I will require of him. And then
you remember I told you how Jacob said These men prophesied. When he blessed his sons, he
blessed Judah and said the scepter will not depart from Judah till
Shiloh. Shiloh comes, the Messiah. And then Isaiah, I told you several
prophecies of Isaiah. He said a virgin shall conceive
and bring forth a son, and thus a child is born. But I want you
to turn tonight to some of the last prophets. The last four
or five, we call them the minor prophets, major and minor prophets. But here in the last of the Old
Testament, turn to the book of Micah. That's about three or
four books from the end of the Old Testament. M-I-C-A-H, Micah. Micah was a prophet called a
minor prophet. And here in Micah chapter 5,
this is 400, 500, 600 years before Christ came, born in Bethlehem. And here's what Micah said. Now
here's how God spake to the fathers by the prophets. Micah said in
chapter 5 verse 2, But thou Bethlehem Ephrathah, though thou be little
among the thousands of Judah, little cities and towns of Judah,
yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me. That is to be
the ruler in Israel. That is to be. whose goings forth
have been from of old, from everlasting. One will be born in Bethlehem."
That's how these Pharisees and scribes, when Herod asked them,
when the wise men came and said, where is this born King of the
Jews? And Herod called the wise men in, he said, I mean the Jewish
teachers and says, where is this Messiah supposed to be born?
They said, Bethlehem. They read this right here. God
spoke. All right, turn to the little
book of Zechariah, a little bit further towards the New Testament.
Zechariah, he's next to the last prophet, next to Malachi, Zechariah
chapter 9. Now, what do these prophets talk
about? They prophesy. God spoke to our fathers through
these prophets. In Zechariah 9 verse 9, Zechariah said, Rejoice
greatly, O daughter of Zion, Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem,
behold, thy King cometh unto thee." He's just, holy, he has
salvation, he's lowly, doesn't sound like a king, does it? Well,
he's born in Bethlehem, he's born lowly. Riding on a donkey,
an ass? Upon a coat, the fold of an ass,
that's your king, that's your king. He rode into Jerusalem. Then let's turn over a page or
two to Zechariah 13. Zechariah 13, verse 1. In that day there shall be a
fountain open. to the house of David, to the
inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin, for uncleanness." What's
this fountain? Fountain filled with blood, drawn
from Emmanuel's veins. Sinners plunge beneath that blood,
lose all their guilty stains. Fountain opened on Calvary for
sin. Look at verse 7. "'Awake, O sword,
against my shepherd. I'm the good shepherd,' Christ
said, the chief shepherd, the great shepherd. But awake, O
sword, against my shepherd, against the man that's my fellow, saith
the Lord of hosts, smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall
be scattered, and I will turn my hand upon the little ones."
Ah, now the last prophet, Malachi. Malachi chapter 3, the last of
the prophets, all the way from Moses to Malachi. There's one
message, the Messiah's coming. Christ. Malachi 3 verse 1, Behold,
I will send my messenger, that's John the Baptist, and he shall
prepare the way before me and the Lord. The Lord himself whom
you seek shall suddenly come to his temple. He did. He came to his temple in Jerusalem,
Solomon's came as a little baby in the arms of Mary to fulfill
the Jewish sacrifices. And Simeon, God's prophet, was
there waiting. And he took up the child Jesus
in his arms and he said, Father, Lord God, let thy servant depart
in peace according to your word. My eyes have seen thy salvation.
He come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant
the everlasting covenant, the messenger, the apostle of the
covenant, whom you delight in. Behold, he shall come, saith
the Lord of hosts. That's what that Old Testament's
all about. He shall come. Not a book of poetry only, beautiful
poetry, beautiful love stories, wonderful, excellent history,
great Proverbs, Beautiful psalms and hymns of the church. But
it's a hymn book, H-I-M, hymn. It's about hymn, hymn. And these Old Testament, if you'll
turn to Hebrews 11 a minute, these Old Testament prophets In Hebrews 11, 13, I want you
to read something here with me. Hebrews 11, 13. These Old Testament
prophets, Abraham and Moses, they died, not having seen the
Savior, just writing about His coming. It says in chapter 11,
verse 13, these all died, Abel, Moses, Enoch, in faith, not having
received the promises. Not having received. They received
the promises, but not the fulfillment of the promises. Not to fulfillment. They said He would come. They
didn't see Him, except by faith. But having seen these promises
afar off, they saw them by faith, eyes of faith, and they were
persuaded of them, convinced that they were true. And they
embraced these promises. And they confessed that they
were strangers on this earth, awaiting the coming of the Lord. Now my text, let's look at it
again. Verse 1, God, who at different times in divers, different manners,
spake in times past unto the fathers. He spoke to the fathers
by prophecy, by sacrifices. Moses slew a lamb, put the blood
on the door. That's a picture. By Tychus,
Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, picturing Christ's
resurrection. He smote the rock, picturing
the smiting of the Lord Jesus. He built the city of refuge in
which the convicted guilty man could flee and be safe. Hath
in these last days, God hath in these last days. What does
that mean? Well, it's a common term used
in the Old Testament referring to the days after the death of
Christ on the cross. Those are the last days. When
you read it in the New Testament, it talks about the last days,
the last days, the last days. And it's talking about the days
we're in and have been in since our Lord died. John Gill wrote
this in 1750, 249 years ago. Listen to what he said. The tradition
of many says that the world shall stand 6,000 years 2,000 years void of law from Adam to
Moses, 2,000 years under the law from Moses to Christ, and
2,000 years in the days of the Messiah, the last days. That's what it's called in the
whole New Testament, the last days. These men supposed that
the six days of creation, it said God on the first day, the
second day, the third day, the fourth day, the fifth day, the
sixth day created all things. That these six days of creation
are expressive of the 6,000 years in which our world will stand.
And the seventh day prefigures the last day, the millennium,
in which shall be the judgment and the world to come, the work
finished the fulfillment of the kingdom. Now whether this be
true, I do not know. Guilt-ridden. But I do know that
we're in the last days. As all of the apostles call these
days since Christ came. And in these days we have God's
greatest revelation. He spoke by His Son. Now let
me show you three verses. Turn to Galatians 4, verse 4.
I'll show you three verses here. Galatians 4 verse 4. A man called me last night. I wasn't
able to come to the phone. I was busy, but so he called
back again this evening. A man from Leon, Kentucky watches
our broadcast television program. He said, do you believe that
Christ will come before the Tribulation or during the Tribulation, the
middle of the Tribulation, after the Tribulation? He said a lot
of preachers preach different feelings about His coming. I
said, well, Brother Joe, I want to tell you this. I don't believe
that anything else has to happen before our Lord comes. We've
been in Tribulation. Our Lord said in the world you'll
have tribulation. Going through this life is a
tribulation. I said Christ may come tonight. He may come soon. There's nothing
to be fulfilled before His coming. We're not going to expect certain
events to happen and then the Lord will come. He'll come at
an hour when you think not. But many people believe, and
here's one of them, that we're not far from His coming. Watch
these scriptures here in Galatians 4 verse 4. When the fullness
of the time was come, God sent forth his Son made of a woman
made under the law. The fullness of the time. It
was come when Christ came. The fullness of the time. Now
look at Mark 7. Let's go to Mark 7 and see about
this fullness of time. Mark chapter I believe it is. Mark chapter
1, verse 15. Verse 14 and 15. Now after that John was put in
prison, Jesus came into Galilee preaching the gospel of the kingdom
of God saying, the time is fulfilled. The kingdom of God is at hand.
Repent ye and believe the gospel. That's the fullness of time when
Christ comes the first time to redeem us. And we await His coming
the second time to receive us. That's the fullness. The time
is fulfilled. It is the fullness of time. It
is the last days. One more, Ephesians 1, verse
10. One more. And don't you love to think that
way? I do. I anticipate His coming. Now, here, listen, and remember
this. In the fullness of time, God
sent forth His Son. Our Lord said, The time is fulfilled,
the kingdom of God is here. Now watch Paul in Ephesians 1.10. In the dispensation, and we know
the word dispensation is a stewardship, it's a time of revelation. But in the dispensation of the
fullness of time, he might gather together in one all things in
Christ, both which are already in heaven and those which are
on the earth, the fullness of time. He's going to gather together
His people. We're in the last days. Christ
came to this earth in those days, in the fullness of times, and
redeemed us. And God, through these years,
has been calling out a people from His name out of every tribe,
kindred, nation, tongue unto heaven. And the object is that
in the end of this dispensation, He's going to gather together
all of His people. which are already in heaven,
Moses and Abraham and David and Elijah and you. But in the newspaper
USA Today, Monday a week ago, I wonder if some of you saw this.
This is one of the signs of the times. Religion is just so corrupt
and commercialized And so far from God today that the coming
of Christ must be near. It just must be near. How can
it get any worse? Here's an article in the USA
today. Israel, the nation Israel over
yonder. Israel's National Parks Authority
announced plans last Monday to build a submerged bridge in the
Sea of Galilee that would allow the tourist to Jerusalem to simulate
Jesus' miraculous walk on water. The Associated Press learned
that a 13-foot wide floating bridge will be built under the
Sea of Galilee and hidden just below the water surface so that
the four million pilgrims who expect in Jerusalem for the Millennium
Celebration will all be able to walk on water. I've heard everything. The time,
it can just end right now. Just let her go. That's enough
to convince me that this world has gone crazy. Completely, completely
away from God and away from truth. And the Jews will make a fortune
on that bridge that you walk on water for $10 and you think
4 million people pay $10 to walk on water. That's a lot of money.
That's religion. Well, let's go on with it. He hath in these last days spoken
to us by his Son. Now this verse answers three
questions. Who is he? Who is this Son? What did he do? And where is
he now? That's answered right here. Let's
see who he is. God hath in these last days spoken to us by his
Son, Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Number one, he's the heir. God hath appointed him heir of
all things. The Father loveth the Son, hath
given all things to him. He's the heir. You say, where
do we come in? We're joint heirs with Christ.
As a wife who's married to a husband is a joint heir. The husband's
heir, it's hers because of the union with him. And Christ is
the heir, and we're joint heirs by our union with Christ. That's
right. By whom He made the world. All
things were created by Him, for Him, and in Him, and He is before
all things, and by Him all things are held together. That's what
Paul said in Colossians. Verse 3. He is the brightness
of His glory. He's the brightness of God's
glory. Where God's glory is seen is where? Where is God's glory
seen? Well, the heavens declare the glory of God. The firmament
shows His handiwork. But the true glory of God is
seen in the face of the Lord Jesus Christ. That's what Scripture
says. We have seen His glory in the
face of Christ. That's His redemptive glory.
And listen, and He's the express, that word is exact, He is the
exact image of His person. No man has seen God at any time.
But me and so Christ, the apostles one day said to the Savior, they
said, show us the Father. He said, he that has seen me
has seen the Father. Believest thou not that I am
in the Father and the Father in me? So he's the exact image
of the Father. You want to know God? Study Christ.
Hear Christ. Listen to Christ. He's God. He's
the only revelation of God we'll ever see. That's right. Even in heaven, it'll be Christ. All right? And he's the exact
image of his person, and he upholds all things by the word of his
power. And I'll tell you, when this thing will end is when he
speaks, when Christ speaks. By His Word it was created, by
His Word it will come to an end. That's who He is. Well, what
did He do? Look at verse 3 there, the latter part. When He had
by Himself, you remember I quote, I love that scripture in Genesis
22, when Abraham answered Isaac. Isaac said, where's the lamb?
He said, my son, God will provide himself a lamb. And himself is Christ. And by himself, by becoming the
God-man, by his obedience in the flesh, by dying on the cross
and rising from the grave, and by intercession, by himself,
By Himself, He purged our sins. By the sacrifice of Himself.
And Abraham is saying three things to Isaac here. He's saying, it'll
be God Himself that'll be the Lamb. God will provide Himself as a
Lamb. And God will provide for Himself
a Lamb. The Lamb was sacrificed to God.
Offering for sins are not sacrificed to men, they're sacrificed to
God. And God will do it by Himself without any help. By Himself
personally, by Himself alone without the aid of any, and by
Himself purged our sins, put them away. Let me read you over
here in Hebrews 10. Turn here a minute to Hebrews
10 and let's read something here. When our Lord died on the cross
and shed His blood, He didn't make it possible for God to forgive
sin. He forgave sin. He put it away. It says He put away sin with
the sacrifice of Himself. Now listen. Verse 12, Hebrews
10. This man, after he had offered
one sacrifice for sin forever, sat down on the right hand of
God, from henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his
footstool, for by one offering he hath perfected forever them
that are sanctified. And verse 17 says, and their
sins and iniquities I will remember no more. That's who He is. That's what He did. Now where
is He? The last line, verse 3. He sat down on the right hand
of the majesty on high. When our Lord sat down, what
does it indicate? His work's finished. The sacrifice
is perfect. Finished. Sat down. Finished
the work, he sat down. The right hand, what does that
mean? That's the hand of power, acceptance, favor. He sat down
on the right hand. And this is a man, our forerunner,
who has sat down in the most exalted place in heaven. Christ is a second Adam. He's
a representative of his people, his church. He's a man, born
of a woman. lived and died, was buried and
rose again, ascended to heaven, and Almighty God elevated him
and exalted him to the most prominent, highly favored, exalted position
in glory, his right hand. Now let me show you something.
Hebrews chapter 6. I'll let you, I'll just miss
you in a minute. Let's look at this. Hebrews chapter
6. Verse 17, God, worrying God, willing more
abundantly to show to the heirs of promise the immutability of
his counsel, confirmed it by an oath. Immutability means unchangeable. Confirmed it by an oath, that
by two unchangeable things. What is that? His promise and
his oath. Two unchangeable things. This
is the promise. God promised eternal life by
Christ, through Christ, in the blood of Christ. He promised
it. And he could swear by no greater, he swore by himself.
That's what Scripture said, he swore by himself. So by these
two immutable things, in which it's impossible for God to lie,
we might have a strong consolation. who have fled for refuge, who
have fled for mercy, to lay hold upon the hope set before us,
which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast,
Christ is that hope, which entereth into that within the veil, within
the veil, in the very Shekinah glory presence of God, whether
the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made a high priest
forever after the order of Melchizedek. That's where he is. He's our
forerunner. He has for us entered and sat down in the most highly
favored, exalted, preeminent place and position in glory at
the right hand of God. What better hope can you have?
And God swore two immutable things. And he swore to it by himself. He could swear by no greater.
You know, men swear by the Bible in court. They say, I'll put
the hand on the Bible. I promise to tell the truth.
People swear by different. But God swore by himself. And everybody who believes on
Christ, looks to Christ, rests in Christ, they accept it. They're
redeemed. They're redeemed, forever and
forever. That's the promise, because He's already there. He
sat down on the right... Well, what's He doing there?
Turn to Romans 8, verse 34. Romans 8, verse 34. Verse 33 and 34, listen to this.
We'll close. Verse 33 and 34. Who can lay anything to the charge
of God's elect? It's God that justifies. Who
is he that condemned? It's Christ that died, and rather,
yea, rather, is risen again, who is even, believe it, even
at the right hand of God. What's he doing? Who also makes
intercession for us. That's who I want on my side,
don't you? I don't need to go to somebody
here on this earth and say, pray for me, help me. If any man sin,
we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous
on the right hand of God. I know this, the Kingdom of God
is the Kingdom of His Son. And eternal life is in His Son. This is the record. God has given
us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. I don't know how
to make it plainer to you, clearer to you, and there's a thousand
denominations in this world, and a thousand different recipes
for religion, and a thousand different ways of being saved
according to me, and according to this Word, one Lord, one faith,
one body, one God and Father, one faith, one salvation, one
Redeemer who said, I'm the way, the truth, and the life. No man
comes to the Father but by me. Well, why seek another way? Why seek another way? The Kingdom of God is the Kingdom
of His Son. He's the King of the Kingdom,
and eternal life's in the Son. May God blesseth our hearts.
And this matter is not settled down here. People ought to come
to the front. You don't come to Christ with
your feet or your legs or your hands. You come to Christ in
your heart. You bow before Him quietly, personally, secretly,
alone in the closet where He hears us. And you say, Lord,
I believe. Help my unbelief. I believe. I receive Christ. I trust Christ
alone. Christ is my hope, my wisdom,
my righteousness, my sanctification, my redemption. I rest in Christ. Give me strength and confidence
and assurance. But Lord, I believe. I believe
the Word. In no other way but Christ. His
blood and His obedience.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
