And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, - Mark 4:18
We are exhorted to take heed how we hear the Word of God (Lk 8:18). Often the preached Word falls on unattending ears. The reason given for the Word not being regarded in the verse above is that the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word. It is evident that those among whom the Word was sown professed to believe, at least for a while, but eventually it was revealed that they had no real interest in Christ. God sends prosperity and poverty, sickness and health, trials and afflictions upon all men for a purpose. For a child of God, it is a trial of faith, which is precious.
For a false professor it is to reveal no faith. What God gives us or withholds from us reveals where our heart is. Our reaction is spontaneous and true to our nature. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also (Mt 6:21). For example, often when one has little, he gives a lot; when he is increased, he gives little in proportion to his increase of whatever it might be. The cares of this world include anything and everything of self-interest. The cares of this world, riches and other things only become evil and damning when they keep men from Christ. It is a sad thing to see those who profess to love Christ being swallowed up by themselves and the world.
O Lord, if I am such a one, empty me of myself and fill me with love for Christ and his church.
