Can zeal in religion lead to true salvation?

Answered in 1 source

While zeal can indicate a desire for God, it without knowledge of Christ's righteousness does not lead to true salvation.

In Romans 10, Paul notes the danger of being zealous yet ignorant. Many Israelites had a genuine zeal for God but lacked the understanding of God's righteousness provided through faith in Christ. This illustrates that mere religious fervor or moral sincerity cannot substitute for the necessary understanding of one's sinful state and the need for grace through Christ. Paul underscores that all efforts at establishing one's own righteousness fall short of God's standard. Only through the acknowledgment of Christ and submission to His righteousness can true salvation be obtained, making mere zeal insufficient on its own.
