How do we know Christ is our substitute according to the Bible?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible affirms that Christ is our substitute, having been appointed by God, willing to lay down His life, and able to pay the price for our sins.

Scripture makes it clear that Jesus Christ serves as our substitute in the divine judgment for sin. In order to stand as our surety, He must meet three key requirements: First, He must be appointed by God, which is evident in passages like Isaiah 42 where Christ is referred to as God's elect. Second, He must be willing to sacrifice Himself, as articulated in John 10:18 where Jesus declares that no one takes His life from Him; He lays it down willingly for His sheep. Lastly, He must be able to reconcile us to God, which necessitates that He is both fully God and fully man, ensuring that He can bear the weight of our sin while being able to offer His perfect righteousness in return. This understanding of imputation—where our sins were charged to Christ and His righteousness is credited to us—is foundational to the doctrine of salvation.
