How do we know Christ's sacrifice relates to the concept of substitution?

Answered in 1 source

Christ's sacrifice on the cross was the ultimate substitutionary atonement for His people, fulfilling God's plan of redemption.

The principle of substitution is foundational in understanding Christ's atonement. As depicted in Revelation, Christ is the Lamb who takes the place of sinners, bearing the sin of His people. This is rooted in the Old Testament sacrificial system, where animals were slain to cover sin. However, these sacrifices were merely types pointing to the true Lamb, Jesus Christ, whose death was ordained before the foundation of the world. His blood accomplished what animal sacrifices could not: a complete and eternal redemption for all who believe.
