How do we know faith is true and not just mental agreement?

Answered in 1 source

True faith is evidenced by obedience to the gospel and a transformation of life, not mere mental assent.

In Romans 10:16, Paul states, 'But they have not all obeyed the gospel.' This indicates that true faith goes beyond intellectual acknowledgment; it involves a heartfelt obedience and submission to the message of the gospel. Genuine faith makes itself known through a life that reflects the teachings of Christ and the transformation wrought by the Holy Spirit. A mere mental agreement with the gospel does not suffice; it is only when one truly receives and embraces the gospel that they exhibit the fruits of true faith, such as love, repentance, and a desire for holiness.

Furthermore, the evidence of true faith includes a visible change in character and behavior, aligning with the doctrines of grace. As 1 Corinthians 2:14 states, the natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, indicating that true understanding and acceptance must come from a spiritually discerned heart. Therefore, individuals who have truly encountered the grace of God will demonstrate lasting change in their lives, showcasing a genuine faith that is accompanied by the Holy Spirit's indwelling presence.
