How do we know God has given understanding to His people?

Answered in 1 source

We know God has given understanding to His people because they are able to discern the truth of the gospel and know Him as the true God.

The assurance of having understanding from God is seen when believers are able to distinguish between the true God and false idols. As stated in 1 John 5:20, the knowledge given by God allows believers to know Him that is true. This understanding manifests in a deep familiarity with the gospel message, as seen in Revelation through the lives of the disciples and early Christians who were transformed by their encounter with Christ. It is a supernatural gift granted to those whom God has chosen, confirming their faith and understanding of eternal life.
