How do we know God's mercy is only for the elect?

Answered in 1 source

God's mercy is specifically intended for the elect as seen in His sovereign choice outlined in Scripture.

In Reformed theology, it is understood that God's mercy is particularly directed towards the elect, those chosen to be recipients of His grace. This can be evidenced by passages that indicate that not all are called to grace, as reiterated in Ephesians 1:4-5, where God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world. The distinction between the elect and the non-elect is rooted in God's sovereign purpose; He decides who will receive His mercies. Those outside this divine election are not meant to partake in the redemptive work of Christ, thus emphasizing the sovereignty of God's will in salvation.
