How do we know our works do not save us?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that all our works are iniquity apart from Christ, and we are saved by grace through faith, not our own righteousness.

In Matthew 7:22-23, many will claim their works, such as prophesying and casting out demons, as a basis for their acceptance before God. However, Christ will say to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of iniquity.' This stark warning illustrates that no amount of human effort can make one righteous before God, as even our best deeds are seen as filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6) without the redeeming work of Christ. Our assurance lies solely in His righteousness and grace, highlighting the biblical truth that salvation is a gift rather than something we can earn or achieve through our actions.
