How do we know that Christ has authority over the church?

Answered in 1 source

Christ's authority over the church is affirmed in Scripture through His roles as Savior and Sovereign (Ephesians 1:22).

The authority of Christ over the church is clearly established in Scripture, as He is designated both as the Head of the body and the Sovereign King. In Ephesians 1:22, Paul writes, 'And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church.' This indicates that Christ’s reign is not only overarching all creation but specifically involves His governance of the church. Furthermore, His declarations throughout the Gospels affirm His power to save, open the hearts of sinners, and build His church, as seen when He states in Matthew 16:18, 'I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.' This reveals His divine authority and the assurance believers have in Him as the Sovereign of their faith.
