How do we know that good works are not a means of salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Good works do not earn salvation; they are a result of it, demonstrating God's grace in our lives.

The Bible explicitly states that we are not saved by our works but by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). Our works do not contribute to our salvation; instead, they are evidence of it. In Romans 6:22, it is clear that believers, now free from sin, bear fruit unto holiness as a result of their relationship with Christ. This fruit is not for earning favor but is a natural outflow of being united with Him, reflecting His righteousness and glory in our lives.
