How do we know that mercy is not earned?

Answered in 1 source

Mercy is described in the Bible as something that cannot be earned or deserved (Romans 9:16).

The Apostle Paul, in Romans 9, makes it clear that mercy cannot be claimed based on human merit. He states, 'So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy' (Romans 9:16). This teaches us that no one can work their way to salvation or earn God's favor; rather, mercy is a gift granted by God’s sovereign will. This underscores the doctrine of grace, where God offers salvation through Christ, independent of human actions, emphasizing that it is about His character and not our ability.
