How do we know that salvation cannot be earned by human merit?

Answered in 1 source

Salvation cannot be earned because it is a free gift from God, demonstrated through the giving of Christ, which negates any merit on our part.

The essence of salvation rests on the gospel message that Christ is the gift of God (Romans 6:23). As Paul points out, while we earn death through sin, the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. This clearly indicates that our own efforts or merits do not contribute to our salvation. Furthermore, viewing Christ as a gift rather than an offer reinforces the doctrine of sovereign grace, affirming that God’s election and grace are unconditional and entirely rooted in His will, thus removing any grounds for human pride or accomplishment.
