How do we know that we can judge righteously?

Answered in 1 source

Righteous judgment is grounded in the Word of God and is necessary for discernment among believers.

In John 7:24, Jesus instructs us to judge with righteous judgment, which means making assessments based on God's revealed Word rather than outward appearances. Believers are responsible for discerning truth from falsehood, and this requires familiarity with Scripture. For example, 1 John 4 advises believers to test the spirits and not believe every claim made in the name of Christianity. A proper judgment involves understanding the gospel itself, which is a form of judgment that distinguishes between those who believe and those who do not. Therefore, righteous judgment arises from an informed understanding of Scripture and the gospel.
