How does self-righteousness hinder salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Self-righteousness hinders salvation by leading individuals to believe they can earn God's favor through their own efforts.

Self-righteousness is a barrier to true salvation because it fosters a belief in one's own merit rather than reliance on God's grace. In Romans 10, Paul illustrates this with the example of Israel, whose zeal was misguided due to ignorance of God's righteousness. When individuals rely on their own works or maintain a standard of righteousness based on personal achievement, they are essentially saying they do not need Christ's righteousness. This attitude not only denies the holiness of God but also leads to spiritual blindness, as the law serves to point us to our need for a savior. Understanding that we cannot establish our righteousness, as seen in Luke 18:9-14, is essential for true faith. Only by recognizing our failure can we grasp the depth of God's grace in Christ.
