What does it mean to be dead to the law according to Romans?

Answered in 1 source

Being dead to the law means the law no longer condemns us; we have been justified by Christ's work.

Romans 7:4 teaches that believers are dead to the law through the body of Christ. This means that in terms of condemnation, the law cannot hold any penalty over us because Christ bore that penalty on our behalf. Being dead to the law signifies liberation from its demands as a means for obtaining righteousness. The law's role is not to dictate our standing before God but to reveal our sinful nature and our continual need for grace. Thus, Christians are called to live in the newness of life provided by the Spirit, not bound by the oldness of the letter of the law (Romans 7:6).
