What does the Bible say about man's inability to choose God?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that man, due to total depravity, is unable to choose God or do spiritual good apart from divine intervention.

According to Romans 3:10-12, there is none righteous, no, not one; all have turned aside and are unprofitable. Total depravity, sometimes referred to as total inability, asserts that due to the fall of Adam, mankind is inherently unable to will or do any spiritual good that meets God's standards. In essence, even the best of intentions fall short because man's will is bound by sin, making it impossible for him to choose God without regeneration by the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul clearly emphasizes that man's natural state is one of enmity against God, as stated in Romans 8:7. This highlights the necessity for a miraculous change—the new birth—granted exclusively by God's grace.
