What does the Bible say about salvation through Christ's death?

The Scriptures establish from the beginning that the only means of salvation for sinners is through the sacrificial death of Christ. In Genesis 3:15, we see the first prophecy concerning the Messiah who would ultimately defeat sin and death. The penalty for sin is death, and Christ, as our substitute, bore this penalty on behalf of those He came to save.
