What is legalism and why is it harmful?

Answered in 1 source

Legalism is the belief that salvation can be obtained through adherence to law or rules, which undermines grace.

Legalism presents a serious theological error by suggesting that one can attain or maintain righteousness through personal works or adherence to the law. This perspective contradicts the central message of the gospel, which is that we are justified by faith in Christ alone (Galatians 2:16). Legalism binds individuals to a burden they cannot bear and minimizes the grace of God. The Apostle Paul warns against this in Galatians, emphasizing that adding any works to faith as a condition for salvation renders Christ's sacrifice ineffective (Galatians 5:2-4). Believers must be careful to uphold the truth of grace that liberates rather than the bondage of legalism.
