What role does Christ play in the believer's justification?

In Zechariah 3, Joshua represents all believers who stand guilty before God, yet he is transformed by the spoken word of Christ. God says, 'Take away the filthy garments from him,' and he is clothed with a change of raiment, symbolizing Christ's righteousness. Justification is thus not about our deeds but about being declared righteous through faith in Christ.
