Why does God wait to show grace?

Answered in 1 source

God waits to show grace until the sinner recognizes their need for Him and the futility of self-reliance.

God's waiting to show grace is not due to a lack of desire to save, but rather a divine purpose to bring individuals to a point of recognition and repentance. He waits for the moment when a person understands that all attempts at self-salvation are in vain, as depicted in the story of the prodigal son, where the father eagerly awaited his return. In Isaiah 30:18, we learn that God longs to be gracious, but He will wait until we realize our need for Him and turn away from our reliance on ourselves. This waiting serves to magnify His grace and highlight the necessity of Christ's sufficiency for salvation.
