Why is covetousness a sin?

Answered in 1 source

Covetousness, or greed, is a sin because it reflects a heart turned away from God and seeks fulfillment in material gain.

Covetousness is defined as an insatiable greed for more, often accompanied by envy of what others possess. In the parable of the rich fool, Jesus warns His listeners to "take heed and beware of covetousness" (Luke 12:15). This sin reveals a profound lack of trust in God's provision and a misplaced value system where material wealth is prioritized over spiritual matters. Covetousness not only leads individuals to accumulate wealth selfishly, but it also distances them from God, as it violates the command to love God above all and to put Him first in our lives. Christians are called to be rich toward God, using their resources to glorify Him and aid others instead of hoarding for their pleasure and security.
