Why is the concept of 'if' important in salvation?

Answered in 1 source

'If' serves as a distinction between evidence of salvation and conditions for salvation.

In Colossians 1:23, Paul introduces the 'if' clause, which many take to mean that salvation is conditional upon human action. However, from a sovereign grace perspective, this 'if' indicates the evidence of true faith rather than a prerequisite to maintain salvation. Those who continue in faith demonstrate the reality of their salvation, which was secured by Christ's work, not by their sustained effort. Thus, the 'if' emphasizes the assurance we have in Christ and reveals the authenticity of our faith. In this covenant of grace, continued belief is evidence of God’s power at work in the believer's life, not a condition for maintaining salvation.
