Why is the foundation of good works crucial?

Answered in 1 source

The foundation of good works is our union with Christ, as it informs both our motives and the results of our actions.

The foundation of good works lies in our union with Christ, which is essential for understanding their significance in the Christian life. As Romans 7:4 explains, being united with Christ means that we have died to the law and can now live in newness of spirit. This union is what empowers us to produce good works that are reflective of our regeneration by the Holy Spirit. Without this foundation, our good works can easily devolve into mere legalism or self-righteousness. However, when we recognize that our works are the outflow of Christ's work in us, we are motivated to serve Him out of gratitude and love, leading to a life that glorifies God.
