Why is the Old Covenant important for understanding salvation?

Answered in 1 source

The Old Covenant reveals humanity's inability to save itself and foreshadows the need for Christ as the ultimate sacrifice.

The Old Covenant serves a critical purpose in understanding the fullness of salvation through Christ. It was established to expose human sinfulness and the inability to achieve righteousness through adherence to the law. The Apostle Paul explains that the law was never intended as a means of salvation but as a tutor to lead us to Christ, the true remedy for sin. The rituals, sacrifices, and commandments provided in the Old Covenant foreshadowed the coming of Jesus, highlighting His role as the one who fulfills the law and provides complete atonement for sin. Without recognizing the Old Covenant's purpose, one cannot fully appreciate the grace revealed in the New Covenant through Christ.
