Why is the righteousness of believers important for prayer?

Answered in 1 source

Believers' righteousness, sourced in Christ, ensures their prayers are effective and heard by God (James 5:16).

The righteousness of believers is central to the effectiveness of their prayers. James makes it clear that it is the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man that avails much. However, this raises the question of who the righteous are, especially since Romans 3:10 states there is no one righteous in themselves. The answer lies in understanding that believers are made righteous through faith in Jesus Christ. Their standing before God is not based on their works, but on the imputed righteousness of Christ (Romans 4:3). This means that the prayers of believers are not based on their merit but on their relationship with Christ, who intercedes for them. Therefore, when they pray, they do so with confidence, knowing that they are heard because of Christ’s righteousness.
