The sermon titled "The Saints' Hardest Battles" by Don Bell addresses the critical issue of the believer's struggle with their own heart, primarily emphasizing the need for reliance on God's grace over self-trust. Bell highlights how trusting in one's own heart leads to folly, as referenced in Proverbs 28:26, and he explores various Scriptural admonitions regarding the heart's deceitfulness, including Proverbs 4:23 and Jeremiah 17:9. Through the examination of these verses, he underscores that the heart is a battleground where faith and doubt grapple, and ultimately asserts that the hardest battle for the saint lies not in external pressures but within their internal thoughts and inclinations. The practical significance of this message serves to remind believers of their constant need for God's mercy and the encouragement to seek a heart attuned to His will, thereby fostering a deeper reliance on Christ for spiritual victory.

Key Quotes

“He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool, but whoso walketh wisely shall be delivered.”

“The greatest war that goes on inside a person, a believer, I think is the war that goes on within themselves, goes on within their own heart and their own soul.”

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”

What does the Bible say about the heart?

The Bible teaches that the heart is deceitful and is the source of life issues.

Scripture emphasizes the importance of the heart, explicitly stating in Proverbs 4:23 to 'keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.' The heart is viewed as the center of thoughts and intentions. Jeremiah warns that 'the heart is deceitful above all things,' highlighting its capacity to lead us astray. The Lord Jesus Christ further illustrates this by stating that 'where your treasure is, there your heart will be also' (Matthew 6:21), indicating the heart's connection to our priorities.

Proverbs 4:23, Jeremiah 17:9, Matthew 6:21

How do we know our hearts can deceive us?

Scripture directly states that the heart is deceitful, leading us to make poor judgments.

Jeremiah 17:9 clearly states, 'The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?' This indicates that our hearts can lead us to make choices contrary to God’s will and to trust in our own understanding rather than in divine truth. The intensity of our emotions and desires can easily skew our perception of reality, which is why the Bible repeatedly calls for vigilance over our hearts, urging us to seek wisdom and discernment.

Jeremiah 17:9, Proverbs 28:26

Why is it important to guard our hearts?

Protecting our hearts is vital as they dictate our actions and moral choices.

In Proverbs 4:23, we are instructed to 'keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.' This command underscores the belief that our innermost thoughts and feelings shape our behavior and life decisions. Guarding our hearts is essential to maintain spiritual integrity and to ensure that our actions align with God's purposes. The battle we face as Christians often lies in our hearts, where desires and inclinations can lead us astray from true righteousness.

Proverbs 4:23, Luke 16:15

How can we deal with our struggles with unbelief?

Acknowledging our doubt and seeking God’s help is crucial in overcoming unbelief.

Unbelief can often feel overwhelming, but Scripture encourages us to call upon God for assistance. In Mark 9:24, the father of a boy in distress cries out, 'Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.' This honest plea recognizes our struggle and highlights the importance of seeking God's grace when we face doubt. Believers are encouraged to trust that God is sovereign and able to strengthen our faith, reminding us of His promises and past faithfulness in our lives.

Mark 9:24, Romans 7:19

What role does prayer play in overcoming heart struggles?

Prayer serves as a vital means to connect with God and seek help for our heart issues.

In times of turmoil or struggle, prayer is essential for maintaining our relationship with God. It allows us to express our deepest fears and uncertainties while asking for divine guidance. James 5:16 encourages us to 'pray one for another, that ye may be healed,' indicating that prayer is integral for spiritual healing. Additionally, as we bring our issues before God, He reassures us of His presence and strength, helping us navigate the complexities of our hearts and lives.

James 5:16, Psalm 94:9

me. Good evening. If you would, for
our scripture, let's turn to Isaiah chapter 25. Isaiah 25. O Lord, Thou art my God. I will
exalt Thee. I will praise Thy name, for Thou
hast done wonderful things. Thy counsels of old are faithfulness
and truth, for Thou hast made of a city an heap, of a defense
city a ruin, a palace of strangers to be no city. It shall never
be built. Therefore shall the strong people
glorify Thee. The city of the terrible nations
shall fear Thee. For thou hast been a strength
to the poor, a strength to the needy and to his distress, a
refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat when the blast
of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall. Thou shalt
bring down the noise of strangers as the heat in a dry place, even
the heat with the shadow of a cloud. The branch of the terrible ones
shall be brought low. And in this mountain shall the
Lord of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast
of wine on the leaves, a feast of fat things full of marrow,
of wine on the leaves well refined. And he will destroy in this mountain
the face of the covering, cast over all people, and the veil
that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death and
victory, and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all
faces. And the rebuke of his people
shall he take away from off all the earth, for the Lord hath
spoken it. And it shall be said in that
day, Lo, this is our God. We have waited for him. He will
save us. This is the Lord. We have waited
for him. We will be glad and rejoice in
his salvation. For in this mountain shall the
hand of the Lord rest, and Moab shall be trodden down under him,
even as straw is trodden down for the dunghill. And he shall
spread forth his hands in the midst of them, as he that swimmeth
spreadeth forth his hands to swim. And he shall bring down
their pride together with the spoils of their hands. And the
fortress of the high fort of thy walls shall he bring down,
lay low, and bring to the ground, even to the dust. Let's pray. Our most gracious and high Heavenly
Father, we come unto thee through thy Son, Lord, giving thanks
for him. for the sacrifice of him for thy people, Lord. We thank thee for thy precious
word and for this day and for this place of worship to come.
We ask thee to be once again with brother Donny as he brings
the word. May Christ be lifted up. We ask thee to be with the
sick of the congregation, to comfort them, to be their stay.
We ask thee to save the lost of this place, Lord. Open their
ear gate, reveal thyself to them. We ask these things in Christ's
name, amen. Number 337 in our hymnals. 337. Teach me thy way, O Lord, teach
me thy way. Thy guiding grace, O Lord, Teach
me thy way. Help me to walk or ride, Mourn
by faith, bless by sight, Lead me with heavenly light. Teach me thy way. When I am set apart, teach me
thy way. When earthly joys depart, teach
me thy way. In hours of loneliness, in times
of dire distress, In failure or success, teach me thy way. When doubts and fears arise,
teach me thy way. When storms o'erspread the skies,
teach me thy way. Shine through the cloud and rain,
through sorrow, toil, and pain. Make Thou my pathway plain, teach
me Thy way. Long as my life shall last, teach
me Thy way. Where'er my lot be cast, teach
me thy way. Until the race is run, until
the journey's done, until the crowd is gone, teach me thy way. Proverbs 28. Proverbs 28. I want to talk tonight about
the saints' hardest battle. The saints' hardest battle. Proverbs 8, verse 26. Well, Scott Richardson used to
say, preach to my heart, not my head. I've been in some services
lately where people said the right things
and things, but it wasn't to the heart. It never got past
the brain. And I'm sorry to say, a man say
a lot of good things. Oh my, to reach the heart, to
deal with the heart. Look what he said in verse 26,
Proverbs 28, 26. He that trusteth in his own heart
is a fool, but whoso walketh wisely shall be delivered. And I want to talk about the
heart, the things of the heart. That's our hardest battle. I
want you to look with me now. In Proverbs 23, in verse 7, the
scriptures has a lot to say about the heart. The heart. He said here in Proverbs 23,
27, for as he thanketh in his heart,
so is he. He'll tell you, eat and drink,
saith he to thee, but his heart is not with you. Oh, as a man
thinks in his heart. And then look over in Proverbs
4, 23. Proverbs 4, 23. This is one of
them verses that says an awful lot. Proverbs chapter 4, and
look down verse 23. Keep thy heart with all diligence. And the margin says, above all
keeping, keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it,
out of the heart, are the issues of life. Issues of life. You know, the Bible has a lot,
like I said, a lot to say about the heart. Jeremiah said this,
he said, the heart is deceitful above all things. Above all things,
who can know it? Who can know how deceitful it
is? Who can know how it'll deceive a man, how it'll take a man away? And his heart will so deceive
him. And our Lord said, blessed are
the pure in heart, for they shall see God. And our Lord also said
this, that where your treasure is, wherever your treasure is,
wherever it's at, Wherever your treasure is, that's where your
heart will be too. If your treasure's on this earth,
that's where your heart at. If your treasure's in heaven,
that's where your heart will be. Wherever your treasure is,
our Lord said, that's where your heart will be. And he also said,
out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh. And he said,
a good man out of the good treasure of his heart bring forth good
threads, but an evil man out of the evil Treasure of the heart
brings forth evil things. And our Lord was angry and grieved
for people's hardness of heart, hardness of heart. And look in
Proverbs 16, I mean, excuse me, Luke chapter 16. Excuse me, I'm
sorry, Luke chapter 16. Look what our master said over
here. Luke 16, 15. You know, he said, I, the Lord,
search the heart, and I try the reins to see which way a man
will go. And with the heart is what man believes with, the heart. Look what our master said in
verse 15. Luke 16, 15. He said, unto them,
ye are they which justify yourselves before men, but God knows your
hearts. For that which is highly esteemed
among men is abomination in the sight of God. And I say the saint's
hardest battle is with his own heart. That's where the war goes
on, goes on. And this is a very unusual message.
I debated whether I should try to preach it or not. But you
know, one thing I believe God does makes us honest with ourselves.
whether we're honest with other people or not. People ask us
how we're doing. Most of the time we'll say, well,
we're doing okay, doing fine, doing fine. But how is it when
we're by ourselves? How is it when we're driving
in our cars? How is it when people are standing
washing dishes? When we have to face reality
and face where we really are? That's why so many people can't
stand to be alone. They got to have noise all the
time, got to be dealing with something all the time. They
can't face reality. They can't feel and face reality.
But I do know this about a believer. He wants to be full of faith.
He wants to be full of faith. He desires the grace of God and
he desires the fruit of the spirit. Love, joy, peace, gentleness,
goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. Against such there is no law.
And they long for these things. Oh, they want the fruit of the
spirit. They want to be full of faith. They want the grace
of God. And they want the fruit of the
spirit. They long for these things and sincerely, sincerely seek
them. But if you're like me, which
I hope you're not, But if you're like me, you take one step forward
and two steps back. One step forward, two steps back. You know, I often ask myself, Lord, why am
I the way I am? Why am I the way I am? When I desire so much to act
like a Christian, so I much like to act a believer and live in
this world to God and His blessed glory, why do I act and react
to the way the things that I do? Why do I act and react to the
things the way that I do? And I think the saint's hardest
battle is not with the world, not with the world, not with
the devil. But with our own hearts, I think
that's where our hardest battle's at. Oh, God, give us a tender
heart. And the greatest war that goes
on inside a person, a believer, I think is the war that goes
on within themselves, goes on within their own heart and their
own soul. A lady told me one time and said,
oh, my troubles and circumstances won't bother me near as bad as
how I react to them. How I react to them. John Bunyan
said that I find to this day seven abominations in my heart. And I tell you that to deal with
the heart is a hard thing to do. It's a hard thing to do. Oh, keep your heart with all
diligence, for out of it are the issues of life. God says,
my son, give me your heart. Give me your heart. Now let me
give you seven things, seven things about our hearts. seven abominations I think that
we'll find. The first was this, inclinings
to unbelief. Inclinings to unbelief. You know,
to doubt God, this is the mother of sin and produces all other
sins. It's so hard, so hard to wait
on God, be still and know that I am God. You know, There's so many times in the
scripture when man would do something, Peter said, Lord, if you bid
me to walk on the water, and Peter walked on the water. But
when it got stormy and it got bad and it looked rough, his
heart failed him. Unbelief took over. And he was
going under and just one hand in the head standing above water.
Lord, save me or I'll perish. Save me or I'll perish. And look
what our Lord said back over in Mark 9. Look at Mark 9. I don't know if you ever have
unbelief or not. To wait on God? To wait on God? Look what it says here in Mark
9 in verse 23 and 24. Jesus saith unto him, if thou
canst believe all things, all things are possible, if thou
canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
And straightway the father of the child cried out and said
with tears, Lord, I believe. Help, help, help my unbelief. Help my unbelief. You know, let
me show you something in Genesis 25. This is what, this is unbelief
right here. Jacob, when God changed his name
in Genesis 28, look what it says over here. I won't show you this
if I can. Genesis 28. How in the world
could we have such unbelief? Genesis 28, 20. Oh, my. Peter, you know, when
our Lord Jesus told him, he said, Peter, you're going to deny me.
Oh, no, Lord. There's no way in the world I'd
deny you. It's impossible for me to die. I'll die with you.
I'll go to prison with you. I'll die with you. Well, he believed
he was going to do that. But look what unbelief done to
him. It caused him to deny the Lord three times and lied three
times. Three times they asked him, a
maid asked him, two maids asked him, said, we know you're with
him. No, no, no, I don't know that man. Another one asked him,
your speech, you sound like a Galilean. Oh, listen, I don't know that
man. Don't know him. Three times he said, I don't
know him. Oh my, you think anybody, how
could anybody do that? If you know your heart, you'll
understand that it wouldn't be that hard if you put it in the
right situation. Oh my, God help us. But look
what happened here to Jacob now. And Jacob, 28, 20, and Jacob
vowed a vow saying, if God will be with me and keep me in this
way, that I go and will give me bread to eat and raiment to
put on, so that I come again to my father's house in peace,
only as interested in what I'll wear, what I'll eat, and what
I'll put on. And he said, I'll come again
to my father's house in peace. Then shall the Lord be my God,
only if he does these things for me. That's what he's saying. And look what he said. And for
this stone, for this stone, which I have set for a pillar shall
be God's house. And of all that he shall give
me, I tell you what I'm going to do. If he treats me real good,
I'm going to give him 10% of what I got. He bargained with
God. His unbelief caused him to say,
if God will be my God and do everything I want him to do,
I'll let him be my God. And then if he does this, if
everything he gives me, I'm going to turn around and give him 10%.
Now that's a pretty good bargain, ain't it? He's bargaining with
God. What unbelief, what unbelief that a man like that would have.
Oh my, there's two things that our Lord Jesus marveled at. Faith
and unbelief, unbelief. And oh my, I hope you don't ever
do that. Inclining to wonder, wonder,
wonder. That's the mother of sin. And
then secondly, Secondly, this is a hard issue, to forget the
love and mercy of God that the Lord Jesus Christ manifests in
us. How quickly sometimes we forget
the love and mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ that manifests in
us. We'll come to a service, and we'll leave, and how quickly
we'll forget We can preach about the love of God, talk about the
love of God, talk about how eternal it is, how blessed it is, how
pure it is, how free it is, and then we'll go out and we'll forget
it. We'll forget the love and mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ
that He manifests. And all this is what I say, you
know, especially, especially seen in our attitude and actions
toward other people, towards others. You know, it's how we
treat other people. Sometimes our attitude and actions
towards others, sometimes we'll be hurt. We don't even know we've
been that way. Sometimes we'll be harsh and
not even realize we've been that way. You know, there's people that
just strictly You know, when they have something to say, they
just want to say that and let it go. There's no small talk,
no intimate talk, no sweet conversation, nothing. Oh, my. And that's why, you know, he
said, forgiving one another, even as God, for Christ's sake,
has forgiven us. And, you know, let me ask you
a question. How many of you have went all
day long and not sought the Lord? Get up in the morning, drink
your coffee, get ready to go to work, and the Lord don't enter
your mind till way up in the day. Would that be a heart issue?
Or is that forgetting the love and mercy of God? How could we,
how could we not be that way? And I'm, I'm the worst. I'll admit to you, I'm the worst.
I'm the worst. And oh, thank God, he said, I've
craven you a poet. My mother may forsake her child,
the child of her womb, but he said, I'll never forsake you.
You may forget my love, you may forget my mercy, but one thing
I'll never do, I'll never forsake you. I'll wrote you on my, craven
you on my hands. And no matter what happens, I'll
never ever forget you. And I'll never forsake you. And
oh my, People think sometimes things wouldn't be the way they
are if he loved me. If he loved me. But I'll tell
you, the Lord must love you greatly for he allows you to suffer greatly.
If he allows you to suffer greatly, that means that he loves you
greatly. He only lets certain people suffer a very lot. And
here's another thing that's an abomination we find in our hearts. A leaning, if I can say it this
way, to the works of the law. What do I mean by that? The works
of the law. How many times have you said,
I'm not going to pray until I get in a better condition. I'm not fit to pray. I got to
wait till I get in a better frame of mind before I can pray. Oh, I don't need to go to service
tonight. If I go to service tonight or today, I'm such a hypocrite. All I'll do is hinder the service. Oh, when I get better, then I'll
go when I can contribute something. Oh, my. Sad, ain't it? You ever thought those things? I'm not. Listen. I'm too aggravated
to pray right now. I'm too upset to pray right now.
That's when you need to pray. That's exactly when you need
to be praying. But oh, my. And here's another
leaning of the law and the works of the law. By judging people
by an act that they do or perform a word or say a word that you
don't agree with in some way, When you judge a person's salvation
by one act that they perform or by a word that they say. That's works, that's law, that's
law. And by giving something, giving
something, expecting something in return. Oh, I got done this for so-and-so,
I done that, and I gave him this, and I gave him that, and the
Lord's gonna really bless me because I gave it. Oh, God have mercy on our hearts. Oh, if God'll be with me, that's
what Abraham, that's what Jacob said, if God'll be with me and
bless me, I'll pay him back. If God will do such and such
for me, I'll pay him back. I'll give him what he wants.
I'll give him what he requires. Like Bruce said, preaching is
the hardest thing you'll ever do. It really is a hard thing. And
here's the fourth thing that we find in our hearts. Wanderings and coldness in prayer. Wanderings and coldness in prayer.
Talking with God, talking with our Lord, talking with our Redeemer. And the minute we almost, we
won't be at it very long, and you know what our mind will do? Start wondering, oh my goodness,
what have I got to do? Oh, Lord, I'm sorry. and you'll
start again, and then your mind will go to what you need to do
today, what you forgot, what you need to do. Oh my. And that is one of the worst
things that I believe I personally do, is when I seek to pray, my
mind will go a thousand directions. A thousand directions. Oh my. And our minds are wandered to
something that just don't amount to nothing when it's all said
and done. And to commune with him with
so much coldness and lifelessness, oh my. Look what Job said in Job 29. Job 29. Job's right before the
Psalms. what he said. We're talking about
word and wonderings and coldness in prayer. Oh, that I were as in months
past, as in the days when God preserved me. I wished I could
go back. I wished I could go back and
remember when God was preserving me, when his candle shined light
upon my head, and when my light and I walked in darkness. Oh,
my. He said, oh, my, I wished it
was like it used to be, used to be. But I hope, I hope that you don't
do those things. But I wonder, wanderings, but
a mind wanders. And we pray, and it's just a,
mechanical thing. I hope not. Oh, our mind wonders
so much. And then here's the fifth thing
I want to talk about. We forget to watch what we pray
for. Sometimes we'll pray for something and we'll pray for
it. And then when it happens and
God gives it to us, we forget to watch for it. We forget to
watch for it. You know, We just had that meeting
a couple weeks ago, and you pray and you pray for the Lord to
bless the meeting, and he greatly, greatly blessed the meeting.
But how many people remembered praying for it and say, boy,
all we've done was just enjoy the blessings. And oh my, even if we pray for
a blessing upon the service, and watch so we can stop and
give thanks, stop and give thanks. Everybody has had times that
God's answered prayer in a day when you ask him for certain
things. That he has come to your rescue. He has come and done
what you ask him to do. But if you pray for a certain
thing and pray for people in a certain way, watch what you
pray for so that when it comes to pass, that you can say, Lord,
I thank you and I bless you for hearing my prayer. I thank you,
oh God, for answering me. I thank you for what you've done
for me. And oh, watch what you pray for.
Don't forget to watch what you pray for. David said, oh, I sought
you morning, noon, and night. And the disciples and the apostles,
they had certain hours of the day that they went to pray. They
went to pray. Now I don't know how they prayed,
I don't have any idea about it, but they'd go to the temple to
pray. And there's so many times when they'd go to the temple,
there'd be somebody sitting outside and they would preach the gospel
to them. But oh my, God help us never to forget to watch what
we pray for. You know, we pray for our children
and pray for our grandchildren, pray for the services, pray for
the preacher, pray for one another, and then we forget what we prayed
for them for. And here's another one. Apt to murmur because I have
no more, and yet ready to abuse what I have. Apt to murmur because I have
no more, and ready to abuse what I have.
You know, there's not any blessing that God given us that we haven't
perverted some way. Whatever blessing he has given
us, we have perverted it. Oh, Lord, I want this. Lord,
I need that. I would like to have this. I
would like to have that. And yet turn around and abuse
what he has given us, not take care of it the way it ought to
be. And the last one of the heart is this. I can do none of those
things which God commands me. I cannot do any of them. Let
me show you in Romans chapter 7. Oh, it's in our hearts to do
it. It's in our souls to do it. What he said here in John 7,
719, for the good that I would, I
do not. But the evil which I would not,
that I do. Now, if I do that, that I would
not, it's no more I that do it. Well, who's doing it then? That
sin that dwells in me. I find then a law that when I
would do good, evil is present with me. Evil right there with us. What
is that evil's with us? Well, think we've done a good
thing. That's evil. That's evil. And look over in
Galatians chapter 5. Galatians chapter 5. Look in verse 17. We've looked at
this so many times over the years. For the flesh lusts or wars against
the spirit. Like I say, that word spirit
is capitalized, that's the Holy Spirit. And the spirit against
the flesh. And these are absolutely contrary
one to the other. They oppose one another. And
you cannot do the things that you would. The will, Paul said,
the will is present with me of how to perform, I find not. So why are we so afflicted and
oppressed with these things, this war that goes on in our
hearts, when we so much want to honor and glorify our Lord
Jesus Christ? Why are we so afflicted with
these things and know that God's wisdom orders everything for
our good, everything for our good? God's too wise to do wrong,
too good to be unkind, And I'll tell you why these things go
on in our heart and why these things that we go through in
life. First reason is to make us abhor ourselves. Oh, to abhor
ourselves. Job said, I abhor myself. Isaiah
said, woe is me. I'm undone. They make us to not
trust ourselves, to abhor ourselves. Second thing they do, they keep
us for trusting our own hearts. I don't trust my heart no farther
than I can spit, I tell you I don't. I don't trust it, I don't trust
yours, I don't trust mine. And the third thing is they convince
me of the insufficiency of what we would call our own righteousness,
when we don't have a righteousness of our own. Oh, our Lord Jesus Christ, I
mean, he's all of our righteousness. Oh, Paul says, you know, I have
no confidence in this flesh, and I want to win Christ. I want
to be found in Christ, not having my own righteousness, which is
after the law, but after the faith, which is in the Lord Jesus
Christ. You know, in Bunyan's Pilgrim's
Progress, there's a fellow called Ignorance. He got in with Pilgrim,
he got in with Faithful, and he got in with Mr. Valiant for
the Truth. They all got in, and they was
walking together. And Ignatius started telling them, you know,
said, I've got a good heart. I've got a good heart. And oh, my, people look back
and say, oh, I was a good child. I've always been honest. That's
trusted in a righteousness from the time you had with your child. Oh my. Shows us insufficiency
of what men call their own righteousness. And here's another reason God
lets these things happen to us and these things go on in our
heart. They allow us, they show us how with necessity the Lord
Jesus Christ is to us. What an absolute necessity is
to have. Anything and everything is good
if it causes us to cast all of our light, all of our strength,
all of our heart, all of our soul on the Lord Jesus Christ. Oh, to go to our Master, to come
to our Savior. So weak, so weak. I can't handle
anything without the Savior. Can't. And I tell you, these things,
this war that goes on in the heart, Oh, when I really realized
just what a mess I am and how much goes on in my own heart
and things, it causes me to pray. I mean, really pray. Oh God,
hear me, listen to me. I need you, I want you, I gotta
have you. God said, call upon me in the
day of thy trouble and I will deliver you. When you're in trouble
and you have the trouble, call on me, call on me. Call on me. Look at Psalm 94.9 with me. Psalm 94.9. Look what he said here, talking
about these things that goes on in our heart, that I was talking
about these abomination, this hardest battle we got with our
own heart. He said, Psalm 94, 9, he that
planted the earth, shall he not hear? He that formed the eye,
shall he not see? Look down in verse 18. When I said, my foot slippeth,
thy mercy, O Lord, held me up. Another reason that God allows
these things to happen to us, they show us that we have a need
to watch and to be sober, to be sober in this, to walk circumspectly,
to avoid evil, to shun its very appearance. They show us how
we have to watch. Our Lord said, watch and pray.
Watch and pray. And oh, my. I'm like a keg of
powder. And all it would take is just
a spark. Set me off. Got to be careful. I don't want
to fall and shame my master. I don't want to fall and shame
the Lord Jesus Christ. And the last thing, it provokes
me to look to God through our Lord Jesus Christ to help me
and carry me through this world. To look to God through Jesus
Christ to help me, and did those, I said, carry me, carry me through
this world. People say, you know, God, let's
hold to God's unchanging hand. He needs to hold us in his hands. I don't know how to put my hand
in God's hands. Where's his hand at? Where's
it at? How do you reach and get a hold
of it? But oh, I look, carry me through this world. He said
over, and I say, I forget where it's at. He said, I've borne
you from your mother's womb, and I've carried you down to
your old age and your hoary hairs. And I need the Lord Jesus Christ
to carry me, to absolutely carry me through this world. Pick me
up and take care of me. And I pray, oh Lord, never set
me down. Never leave us alone. Never let
us have our will. Never let us have our way. And
we sang that old hymn, Lord, cover my defenseless head. Cover
my defenseless head. Oh my. Who is weaker than me,
oh Lord? Who's more subject to fall than
me? Surely, surely, Lord Jesus, there's no one, no one who shows
less love and appreciation than me, but oh God, don't never ever
leave me to myself. Too weak, too weak, too weak. And I'll tell you this, everything
I've said tonight, and I don't know if you get anything out
of it or not, but only a heart, a flesh, Only
a heart that God has done something for. A person who has a living
heart feels the things that I talked about tonight. A heart that loves
its master and its Lord. Everything I've said tonight,
a person would not worry or concern to those things unless they had
a heart of flesh. Unless they could be touched
by the spirit of God. He asked Simon Peter, Simon Peter,
do you love me? Yes, Lord, I do. Simon Peter, do you love me?
Lord, I do. I told you I did. Simon Peter,
do you love me? And he said, Lord, you know. You know. I've told you twice
and no one listens. But you know, you know. Lord, don't leave us to ourselves.
Don't leave us to this heart. Our Father in the Lord Jesus
Christ, please have mercy on me. Forgive me of everything that's
so unlike you. Forgive me that my heart is not
hotter, more zealous, more God-honoring, more Christ-exalting. Forgive me for my murmuring,
my complaining, my impatience, my anger, my reactions to so wrong and
so many times and so many ways. So Lord, I know we need you. All of us need you. And if you're
pleased to take these feeble words that were said tonight
and use them to your glory, I'll bless you and praise you and
thank you. And if you don't, I'll still bless you and praise
you and thank you. Please bring glory to yourself
through us for Christ's sake. Amen. Amen. I need thee, precious Lord. 318. 318. I need thee every hour,
most gracious Lord. No tinderbush like thine can
peace afford. I need thee, oh I need thee. Every hour I need Thee, O bless
me now, my Savior, I come to Thee. I need Thee every hour, stay Thou nearby. Temptations lose their power
when thou art nigh. I need thee, oh, I need thee. Oh, bless me now, my Savior,
I come to Thee. I need Thee every hour. Enjoy your pain. Come quickly and abide. Or life is vain I need Thee,
oh, I need Thee Every hour I need Thee Oh, bless me now, my Savior
I come to Thee I need thee every hour, most
holy one. Oh, make me thine indeed, thou
blessed son. I need thee, oh, I need thee. Every hour I need thee. Oh, bless me now, my Savior. I come to thee. See you Wednesday night, God
willing.
