How do we know our hearts can deceive us?

Answered in 1 source

Scripture directly states that the heart is deceitful, leading us to make poor judgments.

Jeremiah 17:9 clearly states, 'The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?' This indicates that our hearts can lead us to make choices contrary to God’s will and to trust in our own understanding rather than in divine truth. The intensity of our emotions and desires can easily skew our perception of reality, which is why the Bible repeatedly calls for vigilance over our hearts, urging us to seek wisdom and discernment.
