If you would, please turn to
Psalm 62, the 62nd Psalm, and this is a Psalm of David. And I love this thing. I'm gonna
read like the first eight verses of Psalm 62, beginning in verse
one. Truly, My soul waiteth upon God. From him cometh my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation. He is my defense. I shall not
be greatly moved. How long will you imagine mischief
against a man? Ye shall be slain, all of you,
as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a tottering fence. They only consult to cast him
down from his excellency. They delight in lies. They bless
with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. Selah. My soul, wait thou only upon
God. For my expectation is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation. He is my defense. I shall not
be moved. In God is my salvation and my
glory. The rock of my strength and my
refuge is in God. Trust in him at all times, ye
people. Pour out your heart before him.
God is a refuge for us. Selah. I'm just going to stop
right there. I probably will read the last
two verses a little later. I've entitled this, My Soul Waits
for God. But what I want to point out
here, at the start, this is a very, very, very personal psalm from
David, the man after God's own heart, the sweet psalmist of
Israel as they call him, the king of But this is very, very
personal. Just look at it. I mean, my soul,
my salvation, my rock, my defense, my glory, my strength, my refuge,
and I shall not be moved, greatly or otherwise. I like that. Somebody wrote that down. I said,
that's good. He says, I shall not be greatly moved the first
time. The second time he says, I shall not be moved. So I'm
not gonna be moved greatly or otherwise. I like that, I do. But what I wanna point out here
is there are now, right now, truly gracious things that are
known of a man who knows God. There are gracious things, things
that are full of grace, are known to the man or woman who waits
for God, waits upon God. And they are, the reason they
have them is they are given to him. Because in this psalm, what
we are shown here, I've got four things written down that I want
to try and relate this morning. And I know it's not all, but
this is what I got. Uh, and I believe that David,
the man after God's own heart, pin these down in verses one
and two, we see an internal personal knowledge of God and versus three
and four. We see an external personal evil
against man and God. And verses five and seven, we
see an internal personal faith and trust in God. And in verse eight, we see this
very same internal personal faith and trust related outwardly,
proclaimed toward others, shared with others. So the first thing is that internal
personal knowledge David shows here and he starts with this
truly my soul waiteth upon God From him my salvation the word
cometh there is interpolated. It's added in there's nothing
wrong with it But I like it better without in this case Because waiting upon God is not
natural I Man is not naturally a patient creature and certainly
not patient toward God. How are we naturally? How is man? I want to know now. I want to know now. Tell me everything
now. Give it. This is the information
age, you know, And sometimes it gets to the point where I
don't care whether it's true or not, I just wanna know it. That's the state of man, naturally. But the godly state of man, the
spiritual man, says, my soul waiteth upon God. Why? From him, my salvation. This is where David starts this
psalm out. And David is writing here of his soul, my soul, my
salvation. And he's writing here from his
soul, his inner being, his mind, his heart, and his innermost
thoughts. My soul waits and my soul waits
upon God. The salvation of the child of
God, gives to the child of God an internal knowledge of God,
which is personal and individual to that person, to that one being. Our salvation is our salvation. But you have no claim to our
salvation unless from Him comes your salvation. It's individual. It's individual. And it is personal. The salvation
of God, the salvation from God is intensely personal because
the child of God, every child of God, every elect son has to
be, and it states it in the scripture, personally, individually regenerated,
given life from God. The child of God then is given
personally the Holy Spirit. If I go, I'm gonna send the Holy
Spirit to you. He is with you, but he's going
to be what? In you, in you. And the child of God is now personally
taught by the Spirit of Christ. He shall take the things of mine,
and what? Show them to you. to you. I can't show a man anything.
I can preach as best as I can preach. I can be as true as I
can be true. If I can just read this scripture
and the scripture is always true, but that doesn't mean a person
will understand it. The only one that will understand
it is the one that my soul waited upon God from him, my salvation. The child of God is personally
taught by the Spirit of Christ, and we are taught, because we
have to be taught, to wait for God, to wait upon God. Now granted, some people, and
by that I mean me, learn slower than others. We do not all progress at the
same rate. We are not all given the same
thing at the same time. Even, this is the weirdest thing,
even from the same sermon, preached by the same man at the same time.
I don't understand it, but I've seen it work to where Walter
and I have heard a fellow preach, or somebody else and I've heard
a fellow preach, and he picks out one thing, but I've got something
totally different. And then he said what he says,
and I get it. And that's right, he did teach
that. That was part of it. But then I tell him what I saw.
And he's, oh, yeah. God works on his people individually
as he works on his people as an assembly, as a group, as his
bride. And we don't all learn at the
same rates. And here's one thing I do want
to point out because I understand this. Myself David doesn't tell
us that he's really good at waiting upon God. He just says wait upon
him Okay You're not gonna be perfect. I'm waiting upon God
No soul is But every soul tries that knows him to wait upon him And there is a reason for this
waiting the reason for waiting for God it says from him that
my salvation. From him, my salvation. And I
believe this is the key lesson of this psalm and one of the
key lessons of all scripture, period. From him, my salvation. My soul waits upon God. From
him, my salvation. What's that? Salvation is of
the Lord. That's the theme of the book
of Jonah. That's the theme of this whole book. Salvation is
in Christ. Salvation is of Christ. Salvation
is of the Lord. And salvation is of the Lord
first. My salvation is from him. But
his salvation is first. He says it in the next verse,
he only is my rock and my salvation. Man can only understand a little
at a time. He is the way, he is the truth,
and he is the life. There is no other. There is no
other way, there is no other truth, there is no other life.
He is the light. There is no other light. All
outside of the light is darkness. All outside of the life is death. My life, my salvation, does come
from Him. And He is my life, my way, my
truth, and my light. He only is my rock and my salvation. He is my defense. I shall not
be greatly moved. The first thing mentioned here
after from him my salvation is he is my rock. All right, what do you see about
that? Well, my rock, David's rock, is a person. is a person. It's a person. He's my rock. And by inference,
from the first verse, where we're waiting upon God, from him my
salvation, he is my rock, that he is God is my rock. My rock is God. It's what David
is saying here. This is the first thing mentioned
after him saying, from him my salvation. It's a clarification
my my salvation is my rock and my rock is my salvation Now I do want to say this Where
David is doing this impertinent, I mean, you know in intensely
personal psalm It doesn't matter who your rock
is David is talking about his rock There are a lot of people
out there who have a different rock. You understand what I'm
trying to get at here? There are other people have a
different rock. David's not talking about those rocks. There are
other people out there who have a different Jesus. They have
a different Christ. They have a different God. And
therefore, because of that, they have a different salvation. David's
not talking about them. He's not worried about them.
He's talking about my rock. He's talking about my God. He's
talking about my salvation. I want to know this rock. I want
to know this God and this is the salvation I want. The salvation
I need has to come from God. It can't come from me. None of
it. can come from me. It has to come
from God. It has to be God. He is my rock and my salvation. What's that mean? He is my rock
and he is my salvation. Now, If you would, look at 1 Corinthians
chapter 10, because I can't do this without looking at this. Talking about the rock, David's
rock. It's 1 Corinthians 10. Let's go ahead and read verse one through
four. Moreover, brethren, I would not
that ye should be ignorant. How that all our fathers were
under the cloud and all passed through the sea and all were
baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea. He's talking
about the escape from Egypt of the congregation of Israel. And
did eat, all eat the same spiritual meat. But here's the point in
verse four. And did all drink the same spiritual
drink for they drank of that spiritual rock that followed
them. And that rock was Christ. I don't know how to be any clearer
than that. If your rock is not the Christ, the Christ of the
Bible, Christ of the Old Testament, the Christ of the New Testament,
the Christ of the epistles, the Christ of the book of revelations,
you got the wrong rock. That's just what it is. This
is the rock that David's talking about. Paul wrote about that
rock and said, that rock was Christ. This is my rock. They all drank of that spiritual
drink. Where? From that rock. From that
rock. Water came forth from that rock. And water in the scripture is
an illustration of the spirit of God. The Spirit. And Paul wrote that they drank
that spiritual drink from that rock, that rock only. And that
rock followed them. You understand, once the rock
has been revealed to you, once the rock has revealed itself
unto you, you can't go anywhere without that rock. He's gonna
follow you. He'll be there for you, get there. I like that, I do. That rock
followed them and that rock was Christ Jesus, the Lord. My soul
waits upon God, from him my salvation. What? He is my spiritual drink. From him comes my spiritual drink. From him comes the spirit which
he sent. And that spirit teaches us the
things of Christ. He is the source and the substance
of all spiritual, true spiritual life. He is my spiritual drink. He is the source of the substance
and he is that rock which follows me. and he sustains my soul, or it's
not sustained. Paul put it this way in 2 Thessalonians
2, verse 13, I'm just gonna read it. But we are bound to give
thanks always to God for you, brethren, beloved of the Lord,
because God has from the beginning chosen you to salvation. I'll say that again, has from
the beginning chosen you to salvation. Yes, that's in the scripture,
whether anybody likes it or not. I love it. It's in there, but
it says through what sanctification of the spirit and belief of the
truth. That's got the sanctification
of the spirit before the belief of the truth. And if you've got
a problem with that, you got a problem. I can't help you. You understand the scripture
is the scripture. I'm not going to add anything to it if I can.
I'm not going to take anything away from it if I can. I'm going
to try my best not to. But you understand that rock
that followed was Christ. And from that rock, we have a
spiritual drink. And from that spiritual drink,
we have the sanctification of the spirit. What? And belief
of the truth. He only is my rock and Because
he is my rock. He is my salvation Salvation
is by grace through faith and that none of yourselves and it
is through the sanctification of the spirit and the belief
of the truth and And the sanctification of the spirit comes from the
rock. You don't separate yourself and
then go to the rock. No, everything comes from the
rock or it doesn't come at all. There is no sanctification. There
is no setting apart. There is no life to the dead
without the Holy Spirit who was set by that rock, which is Christ. He only is my salvation. He only is my defense My salvation is a person My rock
is a person and it's the same person He only is my defense
Understand This is what it means From him, my salvation. He's my rock, he's my salvation,
he's my defense. Therefore, I shall not be greatly
moved. And only therefore, I shall not
be greatly moved. I just find that just simply
amazing. Now in verses three and four,
We see an external, personal evil against God and man. David frames this in the form
of a man. How long will you imagine mischief
against a man? Ye shall be slain, all of you,
as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a tottering fence. You
are unstable. A wall that's bowed over, or
a tottering fence. And guess what? You're coming
down. But here, this verse, and I,
this verse just gets to me. They only consult to cast him
down from his excellency. They delight in lies. They bless
with their mouth But they curse inwardly. Have you ever heard a better
description of the unregenerate man? I haven't. That's it right
there. And I'm going to tell you something. They don't even know how bad
they are. They have no idea. They have
no idea. And this, I think, is why this
is in this order. Because the only ones who can
see truly the evil against God and man, the true evil that is
in the natural man are those who wait upon God and those who
know he is the rock, their rock and their salvation. Because you can't understand
true evil that's in a man's heart until you know just a little
bit about the true evil in your own heart. And the only ones who can know
both God and man is the ones that are waiting upon God, the
ones that have salvation from God, the ones who know the rock. Because I remember being very
satisfied in myself beforehand. But now, 30 some years ago, God
started revealing to me my own heart, my own sin, my own hatred
of his word that I didn't know I had. But was there all along? I didn't
know. What'd Paul say in Romans 7? What'd he say? I was alive once under God, but,
but, but, praise God, but, the commandment came. The truth of
God came. Sin revived and I died. And now, that which I have seen
in myself, I can see in others. And it's not that they're against
me, even though they may be against me, it's they're against God. They only consult to cast him
down from his excellency. Now the commentators say, well,
they're against good men, which they are, there's nothing wrong
with that necessarily, but no, I don't have an excellency to
be cast down from, I'm sorry. And I don't know anybody else
that's got an excellency to be cast down from other than my
Lord Jesus Christ. And that's exactly who they want
to cast down. And you don't see this external
personal evil until you have an internal personal knowledge
of him. Men delight in evil. How can you say that? I believe
Mr. Christ said it, Jesus Christ.
He said, men hate the light and men love darkness rather than
in the place of, instead of the light. Why? Because their deeds
are evil. Men love darkness and they are
happy to have it that way, but it's easier It's only possible
to see this after you have seen the light. Because you don't
know the darkness until you've seen the light. It's just the
way it is. When everybody's in darkness,
everybody's equal. Everybody's in the dark. But
he has translated this out of the darkness and into the kingdom
of his dear son, into the kingdom of life. And guess what? Bless
God by his grace, we see if we know him. And in verses five to seven, we see
an internal, personal faith and trust in God. My soul, wait thou only upon
God. David's talking to himself here. It's okay to do that. It's okay. Wait, my soul, you know, because
why? We're not good at waiting. We
have to be told to wait by ourselves. I love this. I mean, it's like
he's writing what I've been through. Oh, wait a minute. He is. And
he's writing what you've been through if you're there. My soul
wait thou only upon God for my expectation is from him. And that word expectation, I
really like this, that actually literally, literally translate
as cord, as a rope. We are tied to this rock. We
are tied to the Christ of God. bound by a cord to him and Believers
are to expect him. He is their earnest their expectation
After you have truly seen the world and the evil you will trust
in God more I guarantee it He only is my rock and my salvation
wait a minute he said that before That's right Guess what you do? After you've come to know God,
after you've seen the evil in this world, what are we supposed
to do? Continue. Continue in my word. Then ye
are my disciples indeed. He only is my rock and that rock
is Christ. He only is my salvation and that
salvation is perfect in every way and everything and everyone
that I need. because he is all I need. He only is my defense, my tower. He's the advocate, my advocate
with the Father. He ever liveth to make intercession.
What? For us. For us. And then it says, I shall not
be moved. I shall not be moved. Only because
of him I shall not be moved. And with everything I've said
before, he's my rock, my salvation, my defense, my tower, I shall
not be moved. Only in him. Verse seven, in
God is my salvation and my glory, the rock of my strength and my
refuge is in God. In God is my salvation. There's
salvation in no other. There's no other place to go.
There's no other person to go to. There's no other rock. There's no other truth. There's
no other way. There's no other life. There's
no other light. There's no other gospel. There's only one gospel and it's
his gospel. The gospel of that rock, which
was Christ. God is the rock of my strength. What did it say about us though?
When you were without strength. Without strength. Now I have
strength? Yeah. In Him. In Him you have
strength. We were without strength and
Christ died for the ungodly. Now were you ungodly? That's
the question. You have to fit the description
before the definition applies to you. Christ died for the ungodly. Were you ungodly? Are you ungodly? Good, Christ died for you. He didn't come to die for good
people. No, I came not to call the righteous,
but sinners to repentance. But God is the rock of my strength
and my refuge. We have shelter in the rock. In him, I am safe. In him, I
am saved. And in him, I have refuge. And the last thing. In verse eight, we see this internal
faith and trust in God being proclaimed to others. Verse eight, trust in him at
all times. What was it? Ye people, ye people. Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us. And then, Selah. Think about it, ponder it. After
you have seen him, after you have learned from him, after
you know him, after you trust him, after you believe him, and
after you've seen the evil that's in this world, what do you do? You speak to others. You look
for others. You try to find others. who know
your rock, who know the rock of David preaching here. Now there's a saying, and it's
true to a certain extent. I was going to pick on David,
but he's in there with the kid. You can't teach what you don't
know. And that's the way it is, because that's true. As far as
man is concerned, you can't teach what you don't know. And believe
me, I have been in churches where it is proved every meeting. I'm not joking. Well, it's funny,
but only in a really pathetic, pitiful way. I've been in places
where there is no truth, where there is no light, where there
is no gospel. There's another gospel, but it's
no gospel. It's not this rock they're preaching.
You can't teach what you don't know. I mean, that is one of
the things it talks about in here about the qualifications
for a bishop. It says not a novice. Not a rookie. Now is God capable of using a
novice? Certainly. Certainly. But you can't teach what you
don't know. But after you know something, After you know someone, after
you know David's rock, my rock, my rock, and I hope our rock,
you want to talk about him. You'll want to talk about him.
And you'll talk to people, and I'm sorry, 99 times out of 100,
you will get a negative response. But if you get one good one,
it makes it all worthwhile. Walter and I were in that same
Armenian place. He's the only person that actually
responded to me, negatively or positively, for the most part.
Most people go to church, they don't want to talk about Christ.
They'll talk about anything else. They'll talk about weather, they'll
talk about sports, and I'll talk about weather, I'll talk about
sports. But that's not what I wanted to do there. I was looking for
someone to tell, to trust in Him at all times, ye people. Pour out your heart before Him.
God is a refuge, because it's gone from my refuge, okay? God
is a refuge for us, for all His people. You gotta be brought in individually,
but here's the thing. He will not leave you by yourself. A, that rock's gonna follow you.
That rock will follow you. But we are told to gather ourselves
together. Don't forsake the assembling
of yourselves together, as the manner of some is. And even more,
as the day grows longer, as the end comes. Because it's because
you know Him that you want to see others come to Him. That
you want to know others who trust the same rock that you trust. You want to gather in union with
His Spirit and with His people. Because here's the thing, you
have changed. You have changed. And more clearly
stated, if you want it, You have been changed. If you know my
rock that David speaks of, you are not the same person that
you were born as. You have been born from above
and that makes a difference internally and it will make a difference
externally. You've been changed inwardly
with the love and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, and your
attitude outwardly has changed toward God and his Christ. There are some who were in this
category. They only consult to cast him
down from his excellency. They delight in lies. They bless
with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. that are no longer,
there are those who are in that category who are no longer in
that category. I was one. I was one. Yes, I did it ignorantly in unbelief. That doesn't make it less a sin.
That doesn't make it less true. But you look for those who used
to be there. and maybe God's brought him out. Trust in him at all times, ye
people. Pour out your heart before him.
You don't have to pour out your heart before me. Pour out your
heart before him. God is a refuge for us. God is
a refuge for me and for you. The salvation of God bears fruit
of the spirit in every single believer or it's not his salvation. It doesn't matter whether your
fruit's 30-fold or 100-fold, whether your fruit's 10-fold
or 2,000-fold, there's fruit there of the Spirit if his Spirit
is in you. He is the salvation of His people
from the beginning to the end. He is what? All my salvation. And the results of His salvation,
the results of Him being my salvation are both inward and outward. That internal personal knowledge
of God, the seeing the external personal evil against God, and
the internal personal faith and trust in God. And then the proclamation
of his truth to others. He only is my rock. He only is
our rock. He only is my salvation. He only
is our salvation. He only is my defense and he
only is our defense. He only is my strength and he
only is our strength. He only is my refuge and he is
only our refuge. This is why and how I and we
and us shall not be moved. And I'll save you greatly or
otherwise. I like that, I do. I shall not
be moved greatly or otherwise, because in me and in every believer,
if you believe him, is life, is love, faith, knowledge, strength,
security, protection, fellowship, union, purpose, calling, and
even work. We have all spiritual blessings
in Christ. because he is in every believer. And every believer is in him. He is my rock. What? Wait upon God. Wait upon God. From him, my salvation. And he is my salvation. Our heavenly father, we're thankful
again for your word and your will,
your purpose and your grace, your mercy and your freedom. And it's all in your son, our
Lord Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
