"The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations." Psalm 33:11

Before time began--when nothing existed but the self-sufficient, triune God--He, in infinite wisdom and sovereign pleasure, ordained ALL that would come to pass. His decrees are not guesses or reactions, for the Almighty is never caught unaware. Rather, they are the eternal expressions of His will, the fixed and flawless blueprint by which all things are brought to fulfillment.

God's decrees are absolute and all-encompassing. From the revolutions of galaxies, to the fall of a single leaf; from the rise of nations, to the salvation of souls--nothing occurs apart from His sovereign purpose. Not one atom moves, nor one heartbeat beats, except by His sovereign appointment.

These divine decrees are not mechanical laws, but the wise and holy counsels of the living God. They are called His "counsel "to reflect their consummate wisdom, and His "will" to show that He acts with absolute freedom--subject to none but Himself. Every decree is rooted in infinite understanding, guided by perfect love, and executed with flawless precision.

Such a truth crushes the pride of man. We are not autonomous beings charting our own course. All our days were written in His book, before one of them came to be. What we call circumstances are but the unfolding of His eternal plan. To rebel against God's providence is to question His goodness; to murmur at His will is to deny His wisdom.

Yet for the believer, this same truth is a wellspring of deep assurance. Our salvation is no accident. It is not a divine reaction to human faith--but the outworking of God's eternal choice. As it is written, "He chos

In this sermon, A. W. Pink addresses the doctrine of the decrees of God, emphasizing His absolute sovereignty and foreordained plans for creation. Pink argues that God's decrees are not arbitrary or reactionary but reflect His eternal wisdom and sovereign will, as supported by Scripture references from Psalm 33:11 and Isaiah 14:24. He highlights that every event, from the grand to the minute, unfolds according to God's divine blueprint, thereby underscoring the importance of recognizing human limitations and the necessity of faith in God's providential governance. The practical significance of this doctrine reassures believers of God's unwavering control and purpose, infusing their trials with meaning and providing them peace amid uncertainty, as their salvation is rooted in God's eternal choice rather than human initiative.

What does the Bible say about the decrees of God?

The Bible teaches that God's decrees are His eternal plans that govern all events in history and creation.

The decrees of God, as highlighted in scriptures like Psalm 33:11 and Isaiah 14:24, reflect His sovereign control over all things. According to Psalm 33:11, the counsel of the Lord stands forever, affirming that His plans are both eternal and unchanging. This concept illustrates that God ordained everything that occurs in the universe, from the grandest events to the smallest details, in infinite wisdom and perfect love. His decrees are not mere reactions; they are essential to His divine sovereignty and reflect His everlasting purpose.

In a world where many seek autonomy, the acknowledgment of God's decrees serves as a humbling reminder that every aspect of our lives is orchestrated by God's perfect will. The Scriptures affirm that nothing happens by chance, and every heartbeat is governed by His sovereign appointment. This truth assures believers that their salvation and daily experiences are part of God's eternal blueprint, reflecting His goodness and wisdom in every circumstance of life.
How do we know God's sovereignty is true?

We know God's sovereignty is true through Scripture, which reveals His absolute control over creation and salvation.

The sovereignty of God is substantiated through various biblical passages that illustrate His control over both creation and human affairs. Verses like Psalm 33:11 express that the plans of God stand forever, indicating His omnipotent ability to execute His will without hindrance. Furthermore, Isaiah 14:24 states that God's purposes will stand firm, demonstrating that His sovereignty is not contingent on human actions or decisions.

Understanding God's sovereignty also involves recognizing that He is never caught off guard or reacting to unforeseen circumstances. Instead, His decrees are absolute and encapsulate the entirety of existence. This foundational belief in sovereign grace comforts Christians as we navigate life's challenges, as we can be assured that every moment of our lives is guided by His wise and perfect plan.
Why is belief in God's decrees important for Christians?

Belief in God's decrees provides assurance and peace in knowing that all events serve His divine purpose.

For Christians, believing in God's decrees is crucial as it provides a framework for understanding the world and our place within it. The assurance that every event, trial, and joy is part of God's perfect plan brings comfort and peace amidst uncertainty. As noted in the sermon, God's sovereign purpose assures believers that their salvation and life's circumstances do not happen by accident. Rather, they unfold according to His wise counsel.

Moreover, this understanding compels believers to submit to God's will with reverence, acknowledging that His knowledge and wisdom far surpass human understanding. Such a recognition fosters a deep trust in God, allowing Christians to face life's difficulties with hope, knowing that all things are ultimately working together for their good and His glory, as indicated in Roman 8:28.

the decrees of God. The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations. Psalm chapter 33 verse 11.

Before time began, when nothing existed but the self-sufficient triune God, He, in infinite wisdom and sovereign pleasure, ordained all that would come to pass. His decrees are not guesses or reactions, for the Almighty is never caught unaware. Rather, they are the eternal expressions of His will, the fixed and flawless blueprint by which all things are brought to fulfillment.

God's decrees are absolute and all-encompassing. From the revolutions of galaxies to the fall of a single leaf, from the rise of nations to the salvation of souls, nothing occurs apart from His sovereign purpose. Not one atom moves, nor one heartbeat beats, except by His sovereign appointment.

These divine decrees are not mechanical laws, but the wise and holy counsels of the living God. They are called His counsel to reflect their consummate wisdom, and His will to show that He acts with absolute freedom, subject to none but Himself. Every decree is rooted in infinite understanding, guided by perfect love, and executed with flawless precision.

Such a truth crushes the pride of man. We are not autonomous beings charting our own course. All our days were written in His book before one of them came to be. What we call circumstances are but the unfolding of His eternal plan. To rebel against God's providence is to question His goodness. To murmur at His will is to deny His wisdom.

Yet for the believer, this same truth is a wellspring of deep assurance. Our salvation is no accident. It is not a divine reaction to human faith, but the outworking of God's eternal choice. As it is written, He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world. The cross of Christ was not a hastily devised rescue plan, but by God's set purpose and foreknowledge.

This is the bedrock of our peace. If our lives are governed by the immutable counsel of the Most High, then every trial has meaning, every sorrow is measured, and every joy is a gift from His hand. All is working together, not randomly, but redemptively, for the glory of God and the good of those who love Him.

Let us then bow in reverence before His Sovereign Majesty. Let us rest in the wisdom of His plan and rejoice in the certainty of His purposes.

The Lord has spoken and His counsel shall stand. O Sovereign Lord, how majestic are Your ways and how perfect are Your decrees. Teach us to bow before Your wisdom and to trust in Your providence. Forgive our doubts and our pride. Grant us grace to rejoice in Your purposes, even when we do not understand them. May we live each day in humble submission, confident that You are working all things for Your glory and for our eternal good. In Jesus' name we pray.

The Lord Almighty has sworn, Surely as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will stand. Isaiah chapter 14 verse 24
