The Bible describes the blessed man as one who fears the Lord and delights in His commandments, ultimately pointing to Christ as the blessed man.
Psalm 112 begins with a call to praise the Lord, stating, 'Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.' This description can ultimately be understood as referring to our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the only man who fully exemplifies these qualities. He perfectly feared and revered the Lord, obeying the law not out of obligation but out of delight. It is through Christ that believers can also claim to be blessed because all blessings in heaven and earth are found in Him. By God's grace, we share in this blessing through our union with Christ.
Psalm 112, Romans 7:22
Christ's righteousness is true because it is evidenced by His perfect obedience to God's law and His sacrificial death on behalf of His people.
The assurance of Christ's righteousness is firmly rooted in His perfect life and atoning sacrifice. Romans 5:19 states, 'For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.' This shows that through Christ's obedience—not just in His life but also in His death—He secured righteousness for His people. His righteousness is not merely theoretical; it has real implications as He imparts His righteousness to believers through faith. This imputed righteousness gives believers the standing before God they need to be accepted in Christ, who alone is our hope of righteousness.
Romans 5:19, 2 Corinthians 5:21
Grace is crucial for Christians because it signifies God's unearned favor, which brings salvation and empowers us to live in righteousness.
Grace is fundamental to the Christian faith as it represents the unmerited favor of God towards sinners. As stated in Ephesians 2:8, 'For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.' This grace ensures that salvation is completely dependent on God's action rather than human effort, thereby eliminating any concept of boasting. Moreover, it is through grace that believers are enabled to live righteously and exhibit good works. The Apostle Paul highlights that grace instructs us to deny ungodliness and live soberly. Consequently, grace is not only the gateway to salvation but also the sustaining force of Christian life.
