The Bible teaches that those who build their lives on Christ, the solid rock, will withstand the storms of judgment, while those who rely on their own works will face great loss.
In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus illustrates the importance of foundations through the parable of two builders. One builder constructs his house on a rock, which symbolizes faith in Christ, while the other builds on sand, symbolizing reliance on one’s own works. The storms that hit both houses represent the trials of life and the ultimate judgment of God. The house on the rock remains intact because it is built on the truth of Christ, whereas the sandy house collapses in ruin, highlighting the futility of trusting in human effort for salvation.
Matthew 7:24-27, Ephesians 2:19-21, Isaiah 28:16
Christ is our sure foundation because He is the chief cornerstone laid by God, perfectly righteous, and able to save to the uttermost.
Ephesians 2:19-21 states that believers are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone. This foundation is secure, established by God for His elect. Christ, as a tried and precious stone (Isaiah 28:16), is not only the foundation, but He also fulfills the law perfectly and provides righteousness for His people. Because of this divine establishment and Christ’s eternal nature, those built upon Him are guaranteed to stand firm against the storms of life and judgment. They shall never fall, for their hope is in the everlasting rock, Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 2:19-21, Isaiah 28:16, Hebrews 7:25
Relying on Christ is essential for salvation because He is the only one capable of providing forgiveness and righteousness, while all human efforts result in failure.
The New Testament repeatedly emphasizes that salvation is grounded in faith in Christ alone (Romans 1:16-17). Relying on human efforts, such as good works or religious observance, constitutes building on sand, which is unstable and ultimately doomed to fail (Matthew 7:26-27). Isaiah 28:15 describes those who have placed their trust in their own works and refers to it as a covenant with death. In contrast, those who trust in Christ as their foundation have a sure hope because His sacrifice has already borne the wrath of God for sin. Therefore, reliance on Christ allows believers to receive the righteousness needed to stand before God, securing their salvation and eternal life.
