Okay, let's open up to Psalm
131 again. Let's read this text one more
time. Three verses. Lord, my heart is not haughty,
nor mine eyes lofty. Neither do I exercise myself
in great matters or in things too high for me. Surely I have
behaved and quieted myself as a child that is weaned of his
mother. My soul is even as a weaned child. Let Israel hope in the Lord from
henceforth and forever. What a holy, solemn passage this
is. As I study, the Lord opens up
things and it's too wonderful for me. This is a holy, holy
passage. It's only three verses. And I
think Sunday night is a time when we've had a good day, and
we're tired, and we come in. I hope the Lord will just give
us the ability to enter into these three verses, and we're going to see that it's
a holy, holy passage. Our Lord said, search the scriptures,
for in them you think you have eternal life, And they are they
which testify of me. All of them do. All of them do. Now verse one says, Lord, my
heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty. Neither do I exercise
myself in great matters or in things too high for me. Can that be the words of the
Lord Jesus Christ? Lord, my heart is not haughty,
nor mine eyes lofty. Neither do I exercise myself
in great matters or in things too high for me. I could see
how those would be the words of David. I pray that those would
be the words of me. I really do. But Christ is higher
than the heavens. Absolutely higher than the heavens.
He's the creator of all things. The searcher of the mind and
the heart. Nothing is too great for Him.
But could these be the words of Christ? If they are, how could He say
such a thing? Why would He say such a thing? Look at verse 3. Let Israel hope in the Lord from
henceforth and forever. Let my people find some hope
from this point on. Starting right here on. Now turn with me over to Hebrews
4. Hebrews 4 verse 12 says, For the word of God is quick,
and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing
even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the
joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of
the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest
in his sight. But all things are naked and
open unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do. That's Jesus
Christ. He said His word is sharper than
any two-edged sword. And it divides soul and spirit. And everybody has to answer to
Him with whom we have to do. Now look at verse 14. Seeing then that we have a great
high priest that is passed into the heavens, Jesus, the Son of
God, let us hold fast our profession, for we have not in high priest
which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities,
but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin,
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace that
we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in a time of need."
He said this great judge, this high king, everybody's got to
answer to him, but he said, we have not a high priest that has
not been touched with the feeling of our infirmities. Was in all
points tempted like as we are. Go over to Hebrews 7. Verse 25 says, Wherefore he is
able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto him,
come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession
for them. For such an high priest became
us. Now this, we don't understand
this until we read Psalm 131. Such an high priest became us. He became us. Who is holy, harmless,
undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens.
Verse 27 right there says, Who needeth not daily as those high
priests to offer up sacrifice for his own sins, and then for
the people's. For this he did once when he
offered up himself. Now turn with me over to Philippians
2. Let's start reading in verse 1. Philippians 2 verse 1. I love
this. It says, Be therefore any consolation
in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any
fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels in mercies. Fulfill
ye my joy that you be like-minded, having the same love, being of
one accord and one mind. Let nothing be done through strife
or vain glory, strife or vain glory, but in lowliness of mind. Let each esteem other better
than themselves. Look not every man on his own
things, but every man also on the things of others. Now verse
five says, let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ
Jesus. That was his mind. who being
in the form of God thought it not robbery to be equal with
God, but made himself of no reputation and took upon him the form of
a servant and was made in the likeness of man. And being found
in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient unto
death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath
highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every
name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow of things
in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth, and
that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to
the glory of God the Father. He humbled himself. And because of that, he's been
given a name which is above every name. Because Christ was touched
with the feeling of our infirmities. Because Christ became us. Because Christ took upon Him
the form of a servant and because He humbled Himself. Back over
in our text, verse 3 said, Let Israel hope in the Lord from
henceforth and forever. All those things that were required
by God of His people, none of those things could be fulfilled
by His people. None of them. So Christ became us and He fulfilled
them for us. Now we just read here in Philippians
2, let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. Lord,
help us. Help us. conform us. That mind is not in me, not by
nature. It's not in me. Let's go back
over to Psalm 131. Verse 1 says, Lord, my heart
is not haughty. We cannot say that. This has got to be the Lord Jesus
Christ. I cannot say that. If we were to say that, there'd
be enough pride in that statement to send us straight to hell.
You know that? We can't say that. I cannot say
that. Just listen. You don't have to
turn to Jeremiah 17. Verse 9 says, The heart is deceitful
above all things, and desperately wicked. Who can know it? I, the
Lord, search the heart. I try the reins, even to give
every man according to his ways and according to the fruit of
his doings. Whatever humility I think I have, God knows my
truth. Now whatever humility was in
Christ, God knew His truth. He knew His truth. Psalm 34 says,
The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, and saveth
such as be of a contrite spirit. But that's not my heart. That's not my heart. My heart
is deceitful above all things. and it's desperately wicked.
So what does that mean for me? What's my hope? I only have one. I really only have one. I only have one. Let Israel hope in the Lord. Let Israel hope in the Lord.
Now, turn with me to my favorite verse tonight. Go to Matthew
11. We know this well. Let's read
it with our own two eyes. Matthew 11 verse 28 says, the
Lord says, All ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I'll
give you rest. He says, take my yoke upon you
and learn of me, for I am meek. Now, I was able to enter into
that in the study. And I don't know if I'll enter
into it now. But the Lord said, I am meek. And he said, lowly in heart. He said, you come unto me and
you'll find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden
is light. If God will draw me to Christ. If he'll draw me to Christ. And
if God will put me in Christ, then God will be near me. And
God will save me. And here's the reason why. When
he looks at me, he is going to see the heart of Jesus Christ. That's what he's going to see.
And the Lord said, I am meek and lowly in heart. The Lord
is near those that are of a broken heart. Have you ever been humbled? I mean really humbled. Not embarrassed. I mean humbled. Broken down humbled. That point, you know, have you ever been
to that broken point? You know what I'm talking about? Don't
know what to do, just grown man wants to cry. I need to say this as reverently
as I possibly can. This is a holy statement, but
that was our Lord's heart the whole time He walked this earth. meek and lowly in heart. He was a man of many sorrows.
He was acquainted with grief. That was his heart. That was
his mind. Everything he did was on our
behalf with humility, real humility. Isn't that amazing? That is amazing. I have never been truly humble
one day in my life. Because if I ever have been,
I'm immediately proud of it. That was the heart of the Lord
Jesus Christ. My only hope, the Lord said,
I will hear a broken heart. And my only hope is in the Lord.
It's in His heart. Now go back with me back over
to Psalm 131. Verse 1 says, Lord, my heart
is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty. That cannot be said of
me. Let me show you me, okay? We're going to turn to a couple
places and I'll have you skip some of them, but go with me
to Proverbs 6. This is me. Proverbs chapter 6. Verse 16 says, These six things
doth the Lord hate, yea, seven are an abomination unto him.
The first one is a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that
shed innocent blood. A heart that deviseth wicked
imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false
witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among
the brethren. The first thing God hates is a proud look. A lying tongue and hands that
shed innocent blood. Crucify him, we cried. Hands
that shed innocent blood. Why did man cry that? Pride. I will not have that man reign
over me. That's why man cried that. I
am not the sinner that you say I am. I'm worthy of greater matters. I'm worthy of higher things.
Just listen to Psalm 36. says verses 1 and 2 say, The
transgression of the wicked saith within my heart that there is
no fear of God before their eyes. For he flattereth himself in
his own eyes until his iniquity be found to be hatred. He flatters
himself in his own eyes. The eyes are the gateway to the
soul. The eyes are the gateway to the
soul. You know that? A sinner doesn't have to say one
word. You can see it in his eyes. You
can see all the pride. You can see all the arrogance.
You can see all the hatred. He doesn't have to say a word.
But turn with me over to Song of Solomon. after Ecclesiastes. Song of Solomon
chapter 1. Verse 15 says, Behold thou art
fair. Who is that talking about? Jesus
Christ. Behold thou art fair, my love,
Behold thou art fair, thou hast Dove's eyes. I can't wait to
see his eyes. I can't wait to see him. I can't
wait to see the expression through his eyes. The great God and judge of heaven
and earth. This is what Revelation one says
about him. His eyes are as a flame of fire. But as the substitute for sinners,
as the friend of sinners, God come down. John said, when he
came up straightway out of the water, I saw the Spirit come
down. I saw His Spirit, the Spirit
of Him. And it looked like a dove. It looked just like a dove. Back over to Psalm 131. Verse
1 says, Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty. Neither do I exercise myself
in great matters or in things too high for me. This is true
humility. Humility that cannot be imagined.
It just cannot be imagined. He's the one who spoke the whole
world into existence. All things were made by him and
without him was not anything made that was made. He's the
only one who by himself purged our sins and sat down on the
right hand of the majesty on high. Listen to this. This is John 5 verse 19. Our Lord says, Then answered
Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, the son
can do nothing of himself. What he seeth the father do.
For what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the son likewise.
The son can do nothing of himself. Verse 30, he said, I can of my
own self do nothing as I hear, I judge and my judgment is just
because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the father which
has sent me. He by himself purged our sins.
All things were made by him. And he said, the son can do nothing.
It's true humility. He said, father, I delight to
do that will not mine, thine be done. And he said every bit
of that for me. Every single bit of that for
me. And he felt it. He meant what he said, he lived
it. There is nothing more. Lovable
than true humility. Nothing more lovable. Well, Psalm
131 verse one says, Lord, my heart is not haughty. nor mine
eyes lofty, neither do I exercise myself in great matters or in
things too high for me. Surely I have behaved and quieted
myself as a child that is weaned of his mother. My soul is even
as a weaned child. This world very foolishly, very
ignorantly, calls the things of this world, the happenings
of this world, mother nature. You know, Mother Nature's been
tough on us this year. No, Mother Nature didn't do anything.
God did it. But to the world, this is all
referred to as Mother Nature. My flesh, by nature, wants this
world. It really does. It really does. It wants this
world. That's what our flesh wants.
It wants the things of the world. It wants the praise of the world.
It wants this world. A little child wants one thing,
his mother. That little child is going to
want one thing, his mother. That's it. That child is going
to need you and cling to you and live on you. That is my flesh
by nature toward this world. That's my flesh. I have been
given the unsearchable riches of Christ. But do you know what
my flesh wants? It wants this sinful, filthy,
rotting, decaying, stinking world. That's what it wants. So what's
my hope? Here's my point. I am nothing.
I am worthless. I am wrong. I cannot do anything
that my God has required of me. So what's my hope? What's my
hope of being set free from my own willing bondage? Here it is. Go with me to John
16. John 16, verse 33 says. These things have I spoken unto
you that in me, you might have peace in the world, you shall
have tribulation, but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world. Christ came here for me and he
became me. And he said, I've weaned myself
from this place. That's wonderful. In Christ,
I don't want it anymore. In my flesh, I do. But in Christ,
I don't. I don't want it anymore. So that's
why our text ends by saying. Let Israel hope in the Lord from
henceforth and forever. All my hope and all my obedience
toward God and all my acceptable works are in the Lord Jesus Christ. Every bit of it from henceforth
and forever. Hope in the Lord. And when we
come back, we're going to hope in the Lord. And when we come
back, we're just going to hope in the Lord. We're going to hope
in the Lord. And as time goes on, the sad part is he's going
to show me my sin. He's going to show me my sin.
He's going to show me my sin. And it's going to make me hope
in the Lord. And I'm going to hope in the Lord. Until he. Carries me to glory. I hope the
Lord will bless that. Let's stand together.
