What does the Bible say about God as our Father?

The Bible reveals God as our Father through the relationship established by the Lord Jesus Christ.

In the Bible, particularly in scriptures such as Luke 11:1, Jesus teaches His disciples to pray, starting with 'Our Father.' This signifies a personal and communal relationship with God. The term 'Father' implies both sonship and a familial bond among believers. According to John 1:12-13, those who believe in Christ are granted the power to become children of God, emphasizing that our connection with God is not merely spiritual but also relational, affirming our identity as His children.

Luke 11:1, John 1:12-13

How do we know God is our Father?

God is our Father through adoption and our relationship with Jesus Christ.

The assurance of God being our Father comes from our union with Christ and the doctrine of adoption. Ephesians 1:4-5 speaks of God choosing us and predestining us for adoption as His children through Jesus Christ. This profound truth reveals that our sonship is secured not by our merit but by divine purpose and grace. Moreover, Romans 8:15 tells us we have received the spirit of adoption, allowing us to cry, 'Abba, Father,' signifying an intimate relationship with God.

Ephesians 1:4-5, Romans 8:15

Why is calling God our Father important for Christians?

Calling God our Father is essential as it reflects our identity, relationship, and trust in Him.

Addressing God as 'Father' is foundational in Christian faith because it signifies the personal relationship we have through Jesus Christ. In Galatians 3:23-26, it is emphasized that through faith in Christ, we are all children of God. This relationship grants us the assurance of His presence and love, encouraging us to approach Him boldly in prayer (Hebrews 4:16). It also fosters a sense of belonging within the church, establishing a community of believers united as siblings in Christ, reflecting the family nature of God's kingdom.

Galatians 3:23-26, Hebrews 4:16

What assurance do we have in God's fatherhood?

We have assurance in God's fatherhood through His unchanging love, adoption, and spiritual provisions.

God’s fatherhood provides profound assurance through His love and commitment to us as His children. Romans 8:28 assures us that all things work together for good for those who love God. This speaks to God's providential care in our lives. Moreover, the promise of Hebrews 12:5-6 assures us that He disciplines us as a father would, demonstrating His love and desire for our holiness. As we grow in understanding the depth of His love and faithfulness, we find comfort in knowing that we are eternally secure in our identity as His children.

Romans 8:28, Hebrews 12:5-6

I've entitled this message. Our
father. Our father. When the disciples asked the
Lord, teach us to pray. He said, when you pray, say our
father. God is God the Father, God the
Son, and God the Holy Spirit. That's so mysterious. That's
so glorious. One God revealed in three distinct
persons. And there's no way that we would
ever know anything like that unless he was pleased to make
it known in his word. Oh, our holy religion of revelation,
God's revelation of himself. And he lets us know that he's
one God here. Oh, Israel, the Lord, thy God
is one God revealed in three distinct separate persons. God, the father, God, the son,
and God, the Holy spirit. And when someone can say our
father from a renewed heart. It's an act of worship. If you say from your heart, our
father, that's the worship of the father. The Lord said in
John chapter 14, verse 24, the hour cometh when the true worshipers
I think that's interesting. He didn't just say the worshipers,
but the true worshipers. The hour cometh when the true
worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth. For the Father seeketh such to
worship him. They that worship him must worship
him in spirit and in truth. Now the true worship of the Father
is by the Holy Spirit. You can't worship without God,
the Holy Spirit. I can't preach without God, the
Holy Spirit. You can't hear with God, the Holy Spirit. We can't
think a right thought without God, the Holy Spirit. True worship
is inspired by God, the Holy Spirit. And it's always according
to the truth of the gospel. We wouldn't dare address God
as our father if it wasn't for his son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
We'd be afraid to call him our father, which art in heaven. Now, who is the hour when the
Lord teaches us to pray, our father, which art in heaven?
Is he everybody's father? Now, some believe that he is
by creation. We're all his offspring. We'll
take that passage out of Acts chapter seven, but you can't
get that from the scriptures. I think of that verse in Hebrews
where the writer to the Hebrew said, for which of the angels
at any time said he, thou art my son. An angel is not a son. An angel is a creature. An angel
is greatly blessed, but an angel is not a son of God. Christ is the son of God and
those united to him are the son of God. Turn with me for a moment
to John chapter eight. Now he is not everybody's father. John chapter eight, beginning
in verse 38. The Lord says, I speak that which
I've seen with my father and you do that which you've seen
with your father. Did you catch that? They answered
and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto
them, if you were Abraham's children, you do the works of Abraham,
but now you seek to kill me. a man that hath told you the
truth, which I've heard of God. This did not Abraham, you do
the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, we be
not born of fornication, we have one father, even God. Jesus saith
unto them, if God were your father, you'd love me. For I proceeded
forth and came from God, neither came I of myself, but he sent
me. Why do you not understand my speech? even because you cannot,
you lack the ability to hear my word. You are of your father,
the devil." Now, how many different ways are there to take that?
He says to these people, your father is the devil. God's not
your father. You are of your father, the devil. And the lust of your father,
you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning.
And he abode not in the truth because there's no truth in him.
When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own, for he is a liar
and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth,
you believe me not. Which of you convinces me of
sin? And if I say the truth, why do you not believe me? He
that's of God, heareth God's words. You therefore hear them
not because you're not of God. God's no father to you. Then
answered the Jews and said unto him, say we not well that thou
art a Samaritan and hast a devil. You're crazy for speaking that
way. That's what they're saying to him. That just doesn't make
any sense to us at all. Now, clearly many have the devil
as their father. And you know what the word devil
means? Slanderer, accuser. And his children certainly demonstrate
the family likeness filled with accusations and slander. And if they cannot find an actual
accusation, they'll slander the motives. That's the way the devil
works. Now, God the father is the father. And to be a father, you have
to have a son. You can't be a father without
a son. He is the God and father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, and believers are his children. He truly is
father to them. He's my father. Turn with me
to Hebrews chapter two. When you pray, say, our father. Now, our father implies two things. Number one, it implies sonship. If I can say from my heart, my
renewed heart, our father. And the next thing it implies
is brotherhood, our father. He doesn't tell us to pray my
father. He tells us to pray our father
who art in heaven. Now look in Hebrews chapter two,
verse 11, verse 10. For it became him for whom are
all things and by whom are all things in bringing many sons
unto glory to make the captain of their salvation perfect through
sufferings for both. He that sanctified the Lord Jesus
Christ and they who are sanctified, everybody he represented and
set apart are all of one. Catch the sweetness of that.
If you're a son of God, you are one with the Lord Jesus Christ.
You're not just simply close to him or glued to him. You're
one with him, united with him. This is another one of those
mysteries that we can't really understand, but we believe. One
with the Lord Jesus Christ. Not two joined together, but
one. shall be one flesh don't you
love that the two shall be one flesh united to the lord jesus
christ both he that sanctified and they who are sanctified are
all of one one with him now let's go on reading for both he that
sanctified and they who are sanctified are all of one For the witch
cause, he's not ashamed to call them brethren. He's not ashamed
to say, if Todd Nybert, that's my brother. That's my brother. That's my true brother. We have
the same father. Saying verse 12, I will declare
thy name unto my brethren in the midst of the church. will
I sing praise unto thee. And again, I'll put my trust
in him. And again, behold, I and the children, which God hath
given me. For as much then as the children
are partakers of flesh and blood, those he's united to, he also
himself likewise took part of the same, that through death,
He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is the
devil, and deliver them who through fear of death were all their
lifetime subject to bondage. For verily, he took not on him
the nature of angels, but he took on him the seed of Abraham,
wherefore in all things it behooved him to be made like unto his
brethren, that he might be a merciful and a faithful high priest in
things pertaining to God. to make reconciliation for the
sins of the people, for in that he himself has suffered being
tempted, he's able to succor, help them that are tempted, his
brethren. Now, we're children. If God's
my father, that means I'm his child. Now, how is it that a
son of Adam can be a son of God, a child of God? First of all,
he's got to adopt me. I'm an adopted child. What a blessing it is because
he didn't have to do that. That's what he does of his own
will. He adopts us. Look at Ephesians
chapter one. Ephesians chapter one, our father
who art in heaven. Beginning in verse four. We're going to come back to this
passage of scripture in a minute, but it says, according as he
has chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that
we should be holy and without blame before him in love, having
predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to
himself, to the according to the good pleasure of his will,
to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made
us accepted in the beloved. Now, how do I become a child
of God? He adopts me. It begins with
him. That's his decision. He decides
to adopt me. But not only are we adopted children. Now, when a child is adopted,
it's not part of the original family. He adopted someone who
was not part of the family, but it's better than this. It's not
merely adoption. We're also his children by birth. John 1, 12, and 13 says, For
as many as received him, to them gave he the power to become the
sons of God. Even they which believe on his
name, which were born weren't merely adopted they were born
this is a this is another one of those great mysteries of the
gospel how a believer is born again born of the spirit born
and given the very nature of god that which is born of the
spirit is spirit which were born not of blood Not because our
mom and dad are Christians, not of the will of man, not because
a bunch of men decided to get together and pray until they
get saved, not of the will of the flesh, not because of an
act of man's will, but of God. Children by adoption and children
by birth. Having the same nature as our
father. Now isn't that Once again, this is stuff that you can't
understand. You just believe. You just believe. This is what the Word of God
teaches. And children of the Father demonstrate
a family likeness, and it's natural. Lynn and I were walking into
church. We were behind Isaac and Will last week. And we started
laughing, looking at them walk, because they had the exact same
gait. Exactly. They walked exactly
like. We just did a double take, looked at it, and just thought,
well, you never trained him to walk that way. He did it because
it's his nature to do so. He has the same gene pool as
his dad. He acts like his dad. It was
beautiful to look at that. Now, I love the way the Lord
calls his father, your father. How many times does he do that
in the scriptures? He says, your heavenly father, your heavenly
father. Now he's his heavenly father, but he says regarding
all of his children, all of his children, he's your heavenly
father. Let me show you a passage of
scripture that gives me great comfort. Turn with me to Matthew
chapter seven, verse nine. Or what man is there of you whom,
if his son ask a bread, will he give him a stone? I mean,
if your kid was hungry and said, give me a piece of bread, you
wouldn't give him a rock. You wouldn't do that. You want
the best for your children. You'd want to give them good
bread, things that are necessary for them. Or if he ask a fish,
will he give him a serpent, a snake? Of course not. You wouldn't throw
out a sliver and slimy snake to your kid in Instead of fish,
when he asked for fish, you just wouldn't do that. Now look what
the Lord says next. If you then being evil. Now the Lord doesn't
pull any punches. This is who we are. If you then
being evil. Now, does anybody kind of hold
it? I thought we were his children,
but we are. I thought we were justified in his sight. If we're
children, we are. But the Lord still says, if you
then being evil, does that describe you? If you then being evil,
know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more
shall your father? Isn't that wonderful? How much
more shall your father? give good things to them that
ask him. Your father, you, you're evil.
I mean, he says that that's, that's the way the Lord speaks,
but he speaks also of your father. I love when he said, I go to
my God and your God to my father and your father. He is my father. First John three, one says, behold,
what manner of love the father bestowed upon us that we should
be called. Sons of God. Therefore the world knows us
not because it knew him not. What a relationship that is,
a son of God. And my dad is sitting in here,
I'm a son of Charles Nybert. I've got his genes, I came out
of him, and I'm his son, and that can't change. but I'm a
son of God spiritually. God is my father. I've got an
earthly father, but I've got a heavenly father. God is my
father. And we're taught to cry from
our hearts, Abba, father. Now what does that mean? Abba,
father. Abba is the word framed by infants
and it expresses unreasoning trust. You know the way a baby
just trusts its parents. It's not rational. It's not reasonable.
It hadn't thought it out. It just trusts its parents. Abba. Father expresses intelligent
apprehension of that relationship, and the two combined together
tell us of the love and the confidence of a child. Abba. Father, Romans 8.15 says you've
not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you've received
the spirit of adoption whereby we cry. We cry. Might not be loud, might not
be anybody else hearing it, but God does. We cry. Abba, Father. Galatians 4.6 says, and because
you are sons, God has sent forth the spirit of his son into your
hearts, crying, Abba, Father. And beloved, this is a relationship
that cannot be dissolved. I can't quit being a son. I can't mess up to where I'm
no longer a son. If I'm a son, I'm eternally a
son. I've always been united to Christ
and I cannot lose my sonship. I can't quit being a son. And
the obvious example I thought of was the prodigal. You know,
the prodigal, he had his father and he got a wild hair of some
kind and said, give me the portion of goods that are coming to me.
He wanted all of his inheritance right now. Well, he was still
a son when he did that. Haven't you ever thought crazy
things and had crazy desires? Didn't keep you from being a
son, did it? What about when he went out and wasted his father's
substance with riotous living? I mean, he just ruined everything
and just made an absolute fool of himself. And he was so wrong
to his father, but you know what? He was still a son. That relationship was never dissolved. And when he was out feeding the
pigs, the lowest place a Jewish man could be, He never stopped
being a son and his father had never stopped looking for him.
His father knew this is my son. And when he says, how many servants
in my father's house have bread enough to spare and I'm out here
perishing with hunger, I'm going to rise and go to my father and
say, I know I don't deserve to be a son, but just let me be
one of their hired servants. I realized I've lost my sonship.
He felt that way. I turned to Luke 15. Let's pick
up with what happened. This man never quit being a son. Verse 18. He says, I'll arise and go to
my father and I'll say unto him, father, I've sinned against heaven
and before thee, and I'm not worthy to be called by son. Make
me as one of thy hired servants. And he arose and came to his
father, but when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him. and had compassion and ran and
fell on his neck and kissed him. And the son said unto him, father,
I've sinned against heaven and thy son, I'm no more worthy to
be called thy son. But the father didn't let him
finish his speech. The father said to his servants,
bring forth the best robe. the very righteousness of the
Lord Jesus Christ. And don't hand it to him, put
it on him. And put a ring on his hand signifying
my eternal love and shoes on his feet, the grace to walk in
the gospel and bring hither the fatted calf and kill it and let
us eat and be married for this my son was dead. And he's alive
again. He was lost and he's found. This relationship was never dissolved. A son of God. Now there are innumerable
blessings to being a son of God. I've touched on this already,
but turn back to Ephesians chapter one. This is one of those. passages
of scripture that let us know what it is to be a son and to
have the blessings of sonship. Verse three, blessed be the God
and father of our Lord Jesus Christ who hath blessed us with
all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. And he now
enumerates them according as he hath chosen us in him before
the foundation of the world. The blessing of being chosen
by God before time began to think that God chose me. I love the fact that he chose
the whole company, the elect. I love that, but I also love
this. He chose me. He knew my name. according as he has chosen us
in him before the foundation of the world, that we should
be holy. Now this is a blessing of a son
holiness, a holy nature that does not sin. That's the, that's
what happens in the new birth. Now you say, you mean you got
nature that doesn't sin? Yes, I do. Yes, I do. Every believer
does. It's what's given in the new
birth. A holy nature. If it could sin, if it had the
potential to sin, it wouldn't be holy. You see, holiness is
immutable. It can't change. It can't get
better. It can't get worse. Holy. God chose us to be like
himself. Holy and without blame. I blame myself for so many things. And not enough, I realize that,
but do you know before God, I have no blame. I'm justified. I have no sin. There's nothing
to blame me for. Now that is the privilege of sonship. I'm
holy and without blame. Now go on reading in verse four. without blame before him
in love, having predestinated us under the adoption of children
by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.
What a blessing that is. God's predestination. God predetermining
everything about me to bring me to the perfect conformity
to the image of Christ. Isn't it great to be predestinated?
I love predestination. I just love it. I love it. If
God predestinated it, it's already happened before it's taken place.
He predestinated us under the adoption of children by Jesus
Christ himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made
us except in the Beloved. Is that wonderful? I'm accepted. I'm accepted in the Beloved. Nothing I can do to lose that,
nothing I can do to get it, but I am accepted in the Beloved
without reference to anything in me, without reference to any
good works in me, without... I'm accepted in the Beloved in
whom we have, verse 7, redemption through His blood the forgiveness
of sins according to the riches of his grace. Now, this is just
one of many passages of scripture that speak of the blessedness
of being a son of God. Isn't it wonderful to be a son
of God? You see, if I'm a son of God, I have the father's ear. He hears me when I pray. I pour
out my heart before him and he hears me and he accepts my prayer
for Christ's sake. What a blessed thing it is to
have the father's ear and he encourages us to come boldly
into his presence. Let us come boldly under the
throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help
in time of need, casting all your care upon him for he care
for you. What a heavenly father, he cares
for me. Be careful for nothing, but in
everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests
be made known unto God. You know, children ask for things,
don't they? That's what children do. They ask their father for
things. Lord, would you give me this?
Would you give me that? Well, is that presumptuous? No! They're
children. They're children. Anytime Aubrey
asks me for something, that's my child. I mean, why would she
ask me for that? Well, that's my child. And children
ask for things and the father delights in giving them what
they ask for. Now you know that doesn't mean
I'm asking for a million dollars and he gives me a million dollars.
But oh, we ask for mercy. We ask for grace. We ask for
the peace of God. We ask for acceptance. We ask
that we might be found in Christ. We ask for grace to walk in his
way. We dread the thought of bringing
shame on his name, and we ask to be preserved from that, and
that he'd give us grace to honor him. Oh, we ask for things constantly. If you then, being evil, know
how to give Good things to your children. How much more shall
your heavenly Father give good things to them that ask Him? Isn't it a blessed thing to be
able to ask the Lord for things? And you know, He can give. You can ask me all kinds of stuff.
Can I have that? I won't have it. Or I can't.
But He is so vast in His wealth. Now as children, we have the
father's love. We have the father's love. John 17, 23 says thou has loved
them. Now listen to this. Thou has
loved them as thou has loved me. Now, how does the father
love his son? It's the love of complacency.
He looks upon his son and he says, this is my beloved son
in whom I'm well pleased. Everything about the Lord Jesus
Christ, the father's pleased with. Everything he did, the
father was pleased with. Every way he is, the father delights
in it. He looks at his son and he can't
help but love his son because his son is altogether lovely. He wants not to love. That's
that's how he loves his son. And the Lord says thou has loved
them. As thou has loved me. You know
what that means? That means God looks at Todd
and Ibert. And he says this is my beloved
son. This is he's mine in whom I'm
well pleased. He's beautiful. He's perfect.
He has no faults. We have the father's provision. We have the father's ear. We
have the Father's love and we have the Father's provision.
Now, I want everybody in here to think about how well the Lord
has provided for you just materially. Every one of us, every one of
us, we live like kings, don't we? How the Lord has provided
for us materially. I've got more than ever dreamed
I'd ever have materially. I mean, the Lord's made it easy
for me. I've been able to pay my bills. Got a nice warm house,
has air conditioning, heating. Drive a good car. I'm thankful
for his material provision. But you know, that's the least
of it. Not only, and I don't want to undervalue that, but
I've also got the Father's providence. Not only his provision, but the
Father's providence. That means everything that happens
is working together for my good and His glory. everything in
my life doesn't matter what it is he's in control of it and
at romans 8 28 says and we know that all things work together
for good to them that love god to them who have called according
to his purpose everything that happens all things that's why
the scripture says in everything give thanks for this is the will
of god in christ jesus concerning you whatever god's brought your
way it's his will for you thank him for it we have him providing
for us materially. We have the provision of his
providence, but most especially how he provides for us spiritually. I love one of his names, Jehovah
Jireh, the Lord will provide. Isaac says, here's the fire. Here's the wood. Where's the
lamb for a burnt offering. And Abraham replies, my son,
God shall supply himself. God will provide himself with
the land for a burnt offering. That means three things. Number
one, everything he requires, he provides. You don't have to
come up with a thing. Isn't that wonderful? Everything
he requires, he provides. Number two, he provides for himself. You see, the blood of the Lord
Jesus Christ, it wasn't so much shed for you. It was shed for
God. For God to have anything to do
with anybody like me or you, the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ
had to be shed to satisfy his justice and make a way for him
to accept somebody like me or you. So the blood of the Lord,
the provision was for God. But thirdly, here's the most
amazing thing about it. He provides himself as the lamb. He gave himself. He loved me
and gave himself for me. What provision of him are you
in Christ Jesus, who have God is made unto us wisdom and righteousness,
sanctification and redemption. We have the father's provision
and we have the father's teaching. Turn with me to John chapter
six. This is so comforting to know
that I can do all the preaching and teaching
I want and it'll be all totally ineffectual. But when the Lord
teaches, when he takes that word and teaches, it's totally different. He said in verse 44, no man can
come to me except the father which has sent me draw him and
I will raise him up at the last day. It's written in the prophets,
and they shall be all taught of God. Every believer, God is
their teacher. And if God, you know, I think
it's funny how people say, well, God's trying to teach me something.
No, God's never tried to teach anybody anything. God doesn't
try to do anything. If God teaches you, you're taught.
Whatever he teaches you, you learn. They shall all be taught
of God. every man therefore that hath
heard and hath learned of the Father cometh unto me." That's
what happens when God's your teacher. You'll always come to
the Lord Jesus Christ. You'll come to him for mercy,
for acceptance, for grace, for forgiveness. You're always coming
to Christ. To whom? Coming as unto a living
stone. That's what happens when God
teaches someone, and we have the Father's fellowship. Now this is another, this is
just, this is as amazing as anything else. I have communion with God. You know what that means? I've
got something about me that God can have communion with. The
God of glory can have communion, can have fellowship with me.
It's not like, you know, There's the dog and there's... You can't
really have fellowship with a dog. You can't. A dog's a dog. You
can like the dog. You can pet it. You can be thankful
for its company and so on. I mean, there's all kinds of
blessings of a dog or a cat or any other kind of pet. But you
can't have fellowship. You can't have communion. You
can't really communicate with that animal. That animal has
no idea what's in your heart. God does. John said, our fellowship
is with the father and with his son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. You know, if I have fellowship
with God and you have fellowship with God, you know what? We have
fellowship with one another. There's a true communion of spirit,
the fellowship of the saints. And if God's my father, We have
his fatherly chastening. And I want that. I don't want
to be whipped. I'm not saying that, but I, well, let's go to,
let's go to the scriptures. Hebrews chapter 12. Verse five. And you have forgotten the exhortation
which speaketh unto you as unto children. My son, despise not
thou the chasing of the Lord, nor faint when thou are rebuked
of him. For whom the Lord loveth, he
chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. Now, which
children do you chasten? You don't chasten other people's
kids, do you? You chasten your own. They're yours. You don't
chasten other people's children. Now, if I'm without chastening,
that means I'm not his child. And that's what he says here.
He says, have you forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto
you as unto children? My son, despise not thou the
chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him.
For whom the Lord loveth, he chasteneth. And he scourges every
son whom he receives. And we all need it, don't we?
If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons. For what son is he whom the father
chastens not? But if you be without chastisement,
aware of all our partakers, then are you bastards and not sons. Furthermore, we've had fathers
of our flesh, which corrected us and we gave them reverence.
Shall we not much more be in subjection under the father of
spirits and live? For they verily for a few days
chastened us after their own pleasure, but he for our profit,
that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now, no chastening
for the present time seems to be joyous but grievous. Nevertheless,
afterward, it yielded the peaceable fruits of righteousness unto
them which are exercised thereby. Now, chastening is correction. And I believe that A plane is
going to a destination. There's an arc. constantly while it's trying
to follow that arc, it's getting beat off that arc. Winds, whatever,
it's getting beat off the arc and it always has to be corrected
to get back onto that arc. And that's what you and I need.
We need the correction of the Heavenly Father. And if my father
doesn't correct me when I'm getting off the arc, that just proves
I'm not a child. Now, do I want to be chastened? Yes. Do I want it to hurt? No. Do I want to get out of every
trial I can? Yes. But yes, I want the chasing
of my heavenly father. I don't want him to leave me
to myself. I never will forget the story
of Walter Groover talked about the little Mexican young lady. They already had five kids and
they adopted another kid. And he was very sensitive about
this kid and didn't want to appear too stern or forceful. And when the kid would get out
of line and act ugly, he'd just let it go and wouldn't do anything
about it. And finally, he said one time, I couldn't take it
anymore. I grabbed her and I spanked her. And she started crying. And she said, now I know you
love me. We love the father's correction. Psalm 103 verse eight. The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. He'll not always chide,
neither will he keep his anger forever. He hath not dealt with
us after our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities."
Isn't that a wonderful thought? What if he did deal with you
after your sins? Thank God he doesn't. Verse 11, for as the
heaven is high above the So great is his mercy toward them that
fear him. As far as the East is from the
West, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. Like
as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that
fear him. Oh, to have his fatherly pity. He knows our frame. He remembers
that we're dust. He knows it all together. But
that relationship of fatherly pity never changes. Now, in conclusion, is he my
father? He's not everybody's father. He said to that group of people,
you're of your father the devil, and the lust of your father you'll
do. Is he my father? Can I, without it being an act
of presumption, say, our father or my father? We turn to Galatians
3. Verse 23, but before faith came, before
we had faith, I think that's neat the way it says before faith
came, you know, faith came. It came to us. We didn't just
up and produce it. It came to us. It's a gift of
God. But before it came, before we
knew anything about faith, we were kept under the law, shut
up under the faith, which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore,
the law was our schoolmaster and that doesn't mean a kind
teacher, but it means a pedagogue. It's somebody who beat us when
we got out of line to bring us under Christ that we might be
justified by faith. But after the faith has come,
we're no longer under a schoolmaster for you are all children of God
by faith in Christ Jesus. Now that simple statement, faith
in Christ Jesus. Christ, God's prophet. Christ, God's priest. Christ, God's king. You know, I need him as my Christ.
He's God's Christ, and I need Him as my Christ. He's got to
be my word from God. He's got to be the priest who
represents me. I need Him as my King to cause me to do His
will. I need His kingship, Christ, Jesus. I shall call His name
Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins. He's
the Savior. He's the Christ. He's the Savior.
Do you believe He's the Christ? Whoso believeth that Jesus is
the Christ is born of God. Now, take that for what it says.
It says that. You believe he's the Christ? Do you believe he's Jesus, the
successful Savior? Are you relying on him as your
Savior, as your Christ, to bring you to God? Then, beloved, you
are a child of God. You are. Don't doubt it. Don't
doubt it. You are a child of God and you
have the ear of your heavenly father. And what a heavenly father
he is. Wise, all-powerful, kind, and
gracious. Our father. Our father. Say it with confidence.
Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this
day our daily bread and forgive us of our debts as we forgive
those who are indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and
the power and the glory forever. Amen. Let's pray.
