John 17:23-26
I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
24 ¶ Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.
What does the Bible say about the love of God?

The Bible teaches that God's love is eternal, unchanging, sovereign, and effectual.

The love of God is beautifully described throughout Scripture as eternal, unchanging, sovereign, and effectual. In Jeremiah 31:3, God declares, 'I have loved you with an everlasting love.' This indicates that His love does not have a beginning or an end, extending from eternity past to eternity future. Additionally, Romans 8:38-39 assures us that nothing can separate us from the love of God. It is immutable, meaning it does not change despite our actions or circumstances, reaffirming God's consistent character as love itself (Malachi 3:6). Furthermore, this love is sovereign; God chooses whom He loves (Romans 9:11-13). Lastly, it is effectual; those whom God loves will certainly be saved (Romans 5:6-8).

Jeremiah 31:3, Romans 8:38-39, Romans 9:11-13, Romans 5:6-8

How do we know salvation is by grace alone?

Salvation is by grace alone because it is God's unearned favor that justifies and redeems us through Christ.

The principle that salvation is by grace alone is foundational in Reformed theology and can be seen in Ephesians 2:8-9, which states that we are saved through faith, and that not of ourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast. This reflects the reality that salvation is entirely dependent on God's actions rather than our own merit. In John 17, the Lord's Prayer emphasizes Christ's intercessory role, underscoring that our standing before God is based on His finished work and not upon our feeble attempts to earn favor. God justifies sinners freely by His grace alone, making it clear that any notion of salvation dependent on human response or performance contradicts the grace of God.

Ephesians 2:8-9, John 17

Why is being one in Christ important for Christians?

Being one in Christ signifies our unity in faith and completeness in Him as a body of believers.

In John 17:21-23, Jesus prays for the unity of all believers, indicating that being one in Christ is crucial for reflecting the nature of God to the world. This unity is not merely a social construct but is rooted in the profound truth that we have been chosen in Him, are one with Him, and have His Spirit dwelling within us. Colossians 3:3 further states that our lives are hidden with Christ in God, reinforcing that our identity is inseparable from Him. As a confirmation of our shared faith, being one in Christ not only strengthens our individual bonds in the body of Christ but also serves as a witness to the reality of the gospel, exemplifying the reconciliatory work accomplished through His sacrifice.

Okay, then. Again, we're turning
to John chapter 17, and the title here is not a clever title. The
title of the message is, The Lord's Prayer, Part 9. This makes the ninth message
from this chapter, special chapter in God's Word. It's the Lord
praying for us. Now, I've been abundantly blessed
by studying the Lord's Prayer for us. I've been looking at
it very carefully for the last several months, and I've been
reading and studying and looking at this 17th chapter of John
for the last 30 years. I've read it, preached from it,
I don't know how many times, but you can't wear it out. God's
Word is Everlasting he said heaven and earth will pass away, but
my word will never pass away It is sweet unto the believers
heart Now I've been abundantly blessed and I pray that the Lord
has blessed his word his prayer unto you I've been trying to
bring gospel messages from this prayer, and I pray that the Lord
has been honored when we think about the Lord praying for us
and and standing as our charity, our mediator, our sacrifice,
our representative, our advocate, our intercessor. What great encouragement
it gives us, doesn't it? I think of this verse over here.
Herein is our love complete, that we may have boldness in
the day of judgment, because as He is, so are we in this world. What a great encouragement and
boldness this gives unto every sinner who has been blessed to
see the beauty of Christ. Not only blessed to see His beauty,
but to love Him in His glory, in His sovereignty, in His beauty. The Lord Jesus Christ, to you
who believe, He is altogether lovely. Everything about Him
is lovely. He's the lovely one of God. The
only well-beloved Son. God said, this is my beloved
Son in whom I am well pleased. And He's lovely in our sight
too. He is precious in our sight too. To you who believe, He is
precious to you who believe. Now, let's read verse 20, 21
and 22. Our Lord said neither pray I
for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me
You know faith is called precious Precious faith if you believe
on the Lord Jesus Christ It's because you believe according
to the working of his mighty power Which shall believe on
me through the means that God has ordained and the means that
God has ordained call out and quicken his people and is the
Word of God, the Gospel of God concerning the Lord Jesus Christ.
Verse 21, "...that they all may be made one, one in Christ."
We talked about that representation, Christ being the federal head
of His people. "...as thou, Father, art in me,
and I in thee, that they also may be one in us, that the world
may believe, know, and understand that thou hast sent me, Now look
at verse 22, And the glory which thou gavest me, I have given
them, that they may be one, even as we are one. Being one with the Lord Jesus
Christ, chosen in Him from all eternity, predestinated to be
conformed to the image of the Lord Jesus Christ, being one
with Him and chosen in Him, in the Lord's own blessed purpose
and grace, and in the Lord's own time, He crosses our path
with the true gospel of God concerning the Lord Jesus Christ, and He
reveals Himself unto us. He hid these things from the
wise and prudent and revealed them Unto his babe and you know
what that's called in scripture You remember from Ezekiel chapter
16 about the cast-out infant that God passed by and said this
is the time of love When God crosses our path with the gospel
and reveals Himself unto us, showing us that we are sinners,
showing us our need of the Lord Jesus Christ, and how we stand
completely forgiven and justified in Him. It's called a time of
love. Let me quote that scripture to
you, Ezekiel 16, verse 8. Now when I passed by thee, and
looked upon thee, behold, thy time was a time of love. I spread
my skirt over thee, and covered thy nakedness. And I swear unto
thee..." What did He cover us with? Christ, our righteousness. The robe that He has provided
for us, the garment of salvation. "...and I entered into a covenant
with thee, saith the Lord God, and you became mine." And He,
in that time of love, has made us to know that we are one with
Him. blessed in him and he gives this
salvation look at verse 22 and the glory which thou gavest me
I've given them now if we know anything about salvation as it's
taught in this book we call the Bible salvation is of the Lord
Salvation is by the free and sovereign special grace of God
alone. And it's freely given. He justifies
sinners freely by His grace alone. Grace alone. I've given them
the glory of His mercy, the glory of His redeeming love, the glory
of His electing grace. He said, I've given it to them.
Salvation, you who know Him in saving mercy, know that salvation
is always dependent upon Him, what He has done. Not what we
do for Him, is it? It's what He's done for us. Wouldn't
it be a miserable state to be in to think that your salvation
depended upon your performance? Your doing, your merit, your
righteousness, I tell you, that will cause an honest man to despair. Aren't you thankful that salvation
is all of His doing, His giving, His obedience, His faithfulness? Salvation that is of the Lord
gives Him all the honor and glory, doesn't it? This salvation that
Christ gives is a salvation that He has purposed from eternity,
purchased with His own blood, and freely gives. And this salvation
that He gives, who gets the honor and glory? Huh? Not the sinner. You see, if you
preach something that goes along the line that God's done all
He can do, and God's trying, He wants to, but, you know, it's
really dependent upon your response to it, how you act toward it,
how you receive it, then really, in what you're saying, the whole
thing of salvation is really dependent upon God. It really
depends upon what you do with it. You see, that is nothing
but salvation by works. Plain and simple. You can cover
it up and dress it however you want it. But it's nothing but
salvation or a scheme of salvation. And really it's damnation by
what you do. That's what it boils down to.
That's the bottom line. This salvation that He gives
is a salvation that truly honors and glorifies Him in all things.
That's why the Apostle said, God forbid I should glory save
in the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ. You see, all the attributes
of God are glorified in the salvation of a sinner. All the attributes
of God are glorified in the salvation of a sinner. His holiness is
glorified. It's not compromised, is it?
His truth is honored. His justice is satisfied and
magnified and glorified. His mercy is honored. His love
is honored. You see, all the attributes of
God are glorified in the salvation of a sinner. We read this scripture
and quote it quite often, Psalm 85, mercy and truth are met together. Righteousness and peace have
kissed each other in complete harmony. And all that is seen
and glorified in the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified." You
see, salvation gives Him all the glory in what we call sovereign
mercy. He will have mercy on whom He
will have mercy. Salvation by the grace of God
magnifies God's forgiveness. His long-suffering, His kindness
to us through the Lord Jesus Christ, putting away our sin
by the sacrifice of Himself. His redeeming grace, His redeeming
blood gives Him all the honor and glory. Is it no wonder that
the song of the eternal ages is unto Him who loved us and
washed us from our blood? To Him give all the honor and
glory both now and forever? You see, salvation is Such a
way that God has planned it and designed it by His purpose and
grace, so as to bring, and rightly so, all honor and glory to Christ
alone. As Jonathan Edwards said years
ago, the grand design of redemption is the glory of the Lord Jesus
Christ. You see what he's saying there,
verse 22? The glory which thou gavest me, I've given them. It's the glory of His mercy revealed,
the glory of salvation Through the Lord Jesus Christ putting
away our sin, it's a glory of His righteousness that's freely
imputed as a free gift of His grace. I must not only have my
sin put away, I must have a righteousness to stand before God. And I can't
produce one. I can't work one up. I can't
build one. All my righteousnesses are as
filthy rags. Our only hope of righteousness
before God is Christ, the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Lord,
our righteousness. Now look at verse 23. I in them,
thou in me, that they may be made perfect. Perfect. Perfect. Now I love that word,
perfect. Perfect. Here some people say, well, I'm not perfect, but I haven't
done this. I haven't done that. I'm not
perfect. I haven't done this. I haven't
done that. What they're really saying is that they're not sinners. Every believer can say that they've
been made perfect in one. You're looking at a sinner right
here. It's perfect. Perfect. And the word here means
complete. Complete. I'm completely forgiven. Completely justified. Completely
sanctified. Completely glorified. In Christ,
already done. Justified, glorified, and exalted
in Him. Made, made perfect in one. Now who are we talking about?
In one. In Christ. By one man's disobedience
many were made sinner, unperfect, incomplete. By the obedience
of another shall many be made perfect, complete in the Lord
Jesus Christ. I in them, thou in me, that they
may be made perfect in one. I told you last week what's true
of the head is true of the body. Now let's read some scripture
here. I think it will help us on this
point. Find Colossians chapter 1. Colossians chapter 1. that we may be made perfect in
one." How good does a sinner have to be to stand before God?
Pretty good, wouldn't you say? He has to be as perfect as God. How can that be? In Christ who
is God my Savior, I'm perfect in Him. Look what it says here,
Colossians chapter 1, Wherefore, verse 25, I made a
minister according to the dispensation, the stewardship of God, which
is given to me to fulfill or to fully preach the word of God,
even the mystery which had been hid from ages, from generations,
but now is made manifest to the saints, to whom God will make
known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the
Gentiles, which is Christ in you." The hope of glory. Christ in you is the hope of
glory. Thou in me, what does it say
over here? I in them and thou in me that
they may be made perfect in one. Now stay right in the book of
Colossians. Look at Colossians chapter 2
verse 7. Let's read verse 6. As you therefore
have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him, rooted
and built up in him, established in the faith as you've been taught,
therein Bounding with thanksgiving, beware lest any man spoil you
through philosophy, vain deceit, after the traditions of men,
after the rudiments, elements of the world, and after Christ.
For in him willeth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily, and you
are perfect in him." Complete in Him, which is the head of
all principality and power. Now stay right in Colossians,
look at chapter 3, verse 1. If you then be risen with Christ,
risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where
Christ sits on the right hand of God. Set your affection, your
heart, your mind on things above, not on the things of this earth,
for you are dead, And your life is hid with Christ
in God. When Christ who is our life shall
appear, then shall you also appear with Him in glory." Every believer
is made complete, perfect in the Lord Jesus Christ. Now that
gives this center great hope and assurance of salvation. in Christ. Every believer now
turn to the book of Philippians, turn to Philippians chapter 1.
I love this verse too. Being confident, Philippians
1 verse 6, being confident of this very thing, that God, that
He which hath begun a good work in you, Philippians 1 verse 6,
He will perform it. God who has begun this work of
grace in your heart, He's going to finish what He starts. He's
going to perform it, He's going to finish it, He's going to complete
it, in the day the Lord Jesus Christ comes back for us. There
will be a full manifestation of this perfection in the Lord
Jesus Christ. He will finish, He will perform
all things He has promised to do for us. Now, turn to Hebrews
7. Hebrews 7 verse 9, and here's
the negative side. We are not perfected. Hebrews 7 verse 19, for the law
made nothing perfect. The law made nothing perfect. We are made perfect in one. The
law made nothing perfect, but bringing in of a better hope
did, by which we draw nigh unto God. By the deeds of the law
shall no flesh be justified. By the deeds of Christ all in
him shall be justified. Now turn to Hebrews 10. Another negative. For the law
having a shadow of good things to come, verse 1, not the very
image of those things, can never with those sacrifices which they
offered year by year make the comers therein too perfect. The blood of bulls and goats,
verse 4, cannot take away sin. Now turn to Hebrews 10, verse
10. By the witch will we are sanctified
to the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Every
priest standeth daily ministering, offering oftentimes the same
sacrifices, which can never take away sin. But this man, after
he offered one sacrifice for sin forever, sat down on the
right hand of God, from henceforth expecting till his enemies be
made his footstool, for by one offering he hath made perfect,
perfected forever, them that are sanctified." Now, turn back
to John 17. "...I in them, thou in me, that
they may be made perfect in Christ." Complete, whole, finished, it
done in Him. When Christ is revealed to us,
formed in us. He enters into our heart, our
soul, our life, our understanding, our whole being. He is enthroned
in our soul. He takes possession of us. He
communicates unto us His grace. He grants us His fellowship.
He dwells in us by His Holy Spirit. The love of God being shed abroad
in our heart by the Holy Spirit. Not only by His Spirit and grace,
but by His person. As the head in the members, as
the master of the house, as the king over us, as Lord in all
things. Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory
of God the Father. God hath made that same Jesus
whom you crucified, Peter said, both Lord and Christ. I in them, thou in me, that they
may be made perfect in one." Now, for the rest of the time
this morning, I want us to consider three statements that are made
in these last verses of John 17 about the love of God. The
love of God. The last part of verse 23, Thou
hast loved them, His people, His elect, as thou hast loved
me, the last part of verse 24, for thou lovest me before the
foundation of the world, the last part of verse 26, that the
love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them and I in them. The love of God, how rich, how
pure, how measureless and strong. We read in John 3.35, "...the
Father loves the Son, and hath given all things into His hand."
The Father loves the Son and loves all those in the Lord Jesus
Christ. God so loved that He gave the
Lord Jesus Christ for His people in this world. He gave the Lord
Jesus Christ out of that love. He didn't give the Lord Jesus
Christ in order to love us. He gave the Lord Jesus Christ
because God is love. Herein is love, not that we love
God, but that He loved us. And He sent His Son to be the
sacrifice for our sin. The Lord Jesus Christ didn't
die to get God in a loving notion. God is love. The Lord Jesus Christ
came out of love and laid down His life because He is love. You remember how we started this
discourse in John 13, verse 1? Turn over there. From John 13
through the end of chapter 17 is the Lord's special last words
of instruction unto His apostle, unto His church, Notice what
he starts with. Now, before the Feast of the
Passover, when Jesus knew that the hour was come that He should
depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved His
own, having loved His own, which were in this world, He loved
them to the end. Completely. Completely. This love of God for us. What amazing. truth to think
about, to meditate upon. Now, I want to consider four
things. What does the Bible teach about
this love of God toward His own? What does the Bible teach about
the love of God unto His people? As thou hast loved me, thou hast
loved them as thou hast loved me. Let's talk about four things. The first thing I want to talk
about, and we know about this love, it's eternal. He says in the last part of verse
24, For thou lovest Me before the foundation of the world.
This love of God to His own is an everlasting, eternal love. It is a love without beginning.
It is a love without end. One old writer called it ancient
love. And it is ancient. It's as old
as God Himself. God's love for us did not begin
yesterday. It's not something that's born
in time. His love for us does not begin
with our love for Him. Does it? We love Him. We read that a moment ago. We
love Him only because He first loved us. And this love of God
is made known unto us when it's shed abroad in our heart by the
Holy Spirit. In that time of love. When He
regenerates us in love. But His love for us is eternal
love. God's love for us springs from
all eternity, and it is the ground of divine predestination. It
is the ground of God's electing, I love that term, electing love. It's the ground of His redeeming
love. He loved us and gave Himself
for us in our calling. By God the Holy Spirit is out
of love unto us His own. We read in Jeremiah 31. Don't turn. Let me just read
it to you from the Word of God. Jeremiah 31. You can turn there
if you want to. Jeremiah 31 verse 3. The Lord
hath appeared of old unto me, saying, I have loved thee with
an everlasting love, therefore with loving kindness have I drawn
He draws us out of everlasting love. The love of God, His loving
kindness to us, draws us to Himself. Now, He talks about this love
in the covenant of grace. Turn over to 2 Thessalonians
2 verse 13. It's electing love. Whenever
you find the doctrine of election, you find close by the doctrine
of praise and thanksgiving and adoration. In 2 Thessalonians
2 verse 13, We are bound to give thanks always to God for you,
brethren, beloved of the Lord. There it is, beloved of the Lord.
Because God has, from the beginning, chosen you to salvation through
sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth, whereunto
He called you by our gospel to the obtaining of the glory of
our Lord Jesus Christ. He calls us out of love. He chooses
us out of love. He calls us out of love. And
love and kindness, He said, will I draw you to myself. And we
know that He redeems us out of love. Here in His love, not that
we love God, but He loved us. He laid down His life for us. So this love of God to His own
is an everlasting love. It's an eternal love. It has
no beginning. It has no end. From everlasting
to everlasting, Thou art God. God is love. He always has been. Second thing we know about, what
does the Bible teach about the love of God? It's unchanging. We use that big word, immutable. It means simply, it doesn't change. It's not a mutation, it's not
something that changes. God's love is immutable. It never
changes. There's no possibility of change
in our God. He never will stop loving His
people. His love is not like this human
love where somebody says, well, I love you, and then about two
weeks later they come around and say, well, I hate him. What
happened? You never did love the person.
You never did love the person. God's love is not like our love.
Our love is so frail and so fickle, so changing, isn't it? God's love never changes. There's not a shadow of turning,
no variableness in His love. There's no possibility of God
ever falling out of love with us. It never changes. You see,
He's the same yesterday, today, and forever. Malachi 3.6 declares,
I am the Lord, I change not. Therefore, you sons of Jacob,
You're not consumed, because His love never changes toward
us. God's love does not change. It
cannot be taken from us. It cannot be destroyed. It cannot
be diminished, neither by us or by hell itself. The devil
and all of his fallen angels cannot change the love of God
toward us. It's love without change. It's
love without separation. This love of God. Turn to Romans
chapter 8. Romans chapter 8. The question
is asked here in Romans chapter 8. Who is he that condemneth? Well, let's go back further.
Verse 33, Romans 8. Who shall lay anything to the
charge of God's elect? It is God that justifies. Who
is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather,
that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who
also makes intercession for us. Now who shall separate us from
the love of Christ? Who's going to separate us from
that love, that redeeming, electing, saving, calling love? Shall tribulation,
distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, or sword, that
doesn't change God's love, does it? As it is written, for thy
sake we are killed all the day long. We are counted as sheep
for the slaughter, and they in all things. We are more than
conquerors through Him that loved us. He loved us and washed us
from our sin in His own blood. Yeah, I'm persuaded, verse 38,
that neither death nor life nor angels, principalities, powers,
things present, Or things to come. Circumstances doesn't change
the love of God. Sickness or health. Wealth or
poverty. Sickness or health. Wealth or
poverty. Powers, nor things present, nor things to come. Nothing changes
the love of God toward His own. Height, depth, nor any other
creature. shall be able to separate us
from the love of God which is in the Lord Jesus Christ." You
see, it's unchanging. His character does not change.
God is love. And He loves His own with an
everlasting love. Therefore, with love and kindness,
He draws us to Himself. That chapter in the Word of God,
1 Corinthians 13, is all about this love of God. It says in
verse 8, His love shall never fail. God cannot fail. His love for
us, now think about this, our love for Him grows. His love
for us never grows. Does it? He loves us perfectly,
everlastingly, without change in Christ. There is nothing in
us... Now listen to this. There's nothing
in us to cause God to love us. We don't merit His love. We don't
earn His love. We don't deserve His love. There's
nothing in us to cause God to love us. And there's nothing
that can be done by us To stop His love toward His own. Nothing. God's love toward His
elect is from everlasting. It never changes to any degree
for any reason. The gifts and calling of God
are without change. But God who is rich in mercy,
Ephesians chapter 1 talks about everything we are by nature.
children of wrath even as others, children of disobedience. But
God, verse 4, who was rich in mercy, for His great love were
with, He loved us even when we were unlovely, dead in our sin,
He loved us still anyway. In Christ now. So the love of
God is everlasting, isn't it? Everlasting. It has no beginning
and no end. It's unchanging. It's unchanging. As thou hast loved, thou hast
sent me, and hast loved them, and thou hast loved me. For thou
lovest me before the foundation of the world. Now here's the
third thing we must know about the love of God. What does the
Bible teach about the love of God? God is sovereign in His
love. Sovereign in His love. The sovereignty
of God's love. Now turn back to the book of
Romans, and find Romans chapter 9 this time. Contrary to what
has been preached in the last couple hundred years by most
people, this thing of universal love,
which is really, if you think about it, They said, you know,
the false preachers say that God's love is universal, that
He loves all men everywhere without exception. He loves all men everywhere
without exception. They say that's the universality
of God's love. Well, okay. What are you going
to do with this scripture then? Turn to Romans 9, verse 11. For the children being not yet
born, either having done any good or evil, that the purpose
of God, according to the election, might stand, is not of works,
but of him that calleth. It was said unto her, that is,
Rebekah, the mother, that had these twin boys, the elder shall
serve the younger, as it is written, Jacob have I loved, Esau have
I hated." Now, if God loves everybody, just alike, without exception,
universally the same, what are you going to do with that verse?
How you gonna get around that verse? You see, the sovereignty of God
has, God is love, and as God, He has the right to love whom
He will. Now, God given me a special love
for one woman, my wife. What if I told her, I love all
women just like I love you. That wouldn't go too good, would
it? That wouldn't work too good, would it? No, I have a special
love for that one woman. She's my wife. I married her. We're in a covenant relationship.
That is also true of the Lord Jesus Christ. Husbands, love
your wives even as Christ loved the church and gave himself for
it. He loves his church, his people,
those elected in love, those for whom he died in love. The
sovereignty of God's love. It is utter nonsense to talk
about the love of God in general terms. To say something to the
effect, well, there is a sense in which God loves all men. That's
not so. That's universal nonsense is
what that is. His love is sovereign. The songwriter
of that song that my wife just sang. Hail universal love. Old Jedediah Brewer wrote that
song way back years ago. Hail sovereign love that first
began a scheme to rescue fallen men, fallen sinners. Behold what
manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us that we should
be called sons of God. The love of God that is revealed
in the Word of God is that special electing love to His church,
His bride alone. You say, why make that a point? You know, that's offensive to
a lot of folks. You tell most religious folks that God doesn't
love all men everywhere, and you'll have a fight on your hands. But my friend, if God loves all
men everywhere, and Christ died for all men everywhere without
exception, and yet some wind up in hell, what does that say
about His love? Doesn't work very good, does
it? What does that say about his death? Well, you really didn't
get the job done. You see, we can't have that.
We can't have God's love failing at any point. Those for whom
He loves, they must be saved. He loves them. Those for whom
the Lord Jesus Christ put away their sin, they must be justified. Because He put away their sin.
There's nobody in hell for whom the Lord Jesus Christ died. All that the Father giveth me
shall come to me, and those that come to me I will never cast
them out. They come by His grace. And that leads us to the fourth
point and last point. The love of God is effectual.
Effectual. That is, those for whom He loves
with an everlasting love, unchanging love, sovereign love, is those
for whom the Lord Jesus Christ died. He died for those for whom
He loves. And if He put away their sin
and justified them by His blood, they cannot perish. God's love
is more than a wish or desire in His heart to save sinners.
God's love for us is an effectual saving love. Now, you've got
the book of Romans chapter 9, turn back a couple pages to Romans
chapter 5. Romans chapter 5, look at verse
6. For when we were yet without strength, for when we were yet without
merit, without righteousness, without God, without hope, without
Christ, in due time Christ died for somebody, the ungodly. were scarcely for a righteous
man will one die, yet peradventure for a good man some would even
dare to die. God commended his love toward
us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Much more than being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved
from wrath through him. For if when we were enemies,
We were reconciled to God by the death of His Son. Much more,
being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. Not only so,
but we also join our God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom
we now have received the atonement. God commendeth His love toward
us. How do we know that? He was manifested
to take away our sin, and in Him is no sin. The love of God
is effectual love. That simply means that those
who are the object of God's love shall be saved effectually, eternally,
and definitely because they are object of His love. Otherwise,
the love of God is utterly a useless thing. If His love doesn't save
us, what kind of love is that? That's
my hope. As He loved us, and washed us
from our sin in His own blood. The songwriter put it this way.
Here's another good song. Could we with ink the ocean fill,
and were the skies of parchment made, were every stock on earth
a quill, and every man a scribe by trade, the right to love of
God would drain the ocean dry, nor could the scroll contain
the whole, though stretched from sky to sky. O love of God, how
rich and pure, how measureless and strong, it shall forever
endure. It's the saints' and angels'
song from all eternity. It's God's love to us. Now let's
close by reading this Scripture here. Find Ephesians. I was thinking
about this Scripture when I was thinking about how to close this
message, and this Scripture came to mind. Ephesians chapter 3.
Ephesians chapter 3, when the Apostle prays for the church
there in Ephesus, those whom God had chosen, those for whom
the Lord Jesus Christ had died and called, the spectral calling
of the Holy Spirit, he says in Ephesians 3 verse 14, for this
cause, I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that he would
grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened
with might by his Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell
in your hearts by faith, that you being rooted and grounded
in love." In love. This love of God that we've been
talking about. Saving love. Effectual love. Sovereign love. May be able to comprehend with
the saints, what is the breadth, the length, the depth, the height,
and to know the love of Christ, which passes knowledge, that
you might be filled with all the fullness of God. Now unto
Him that is able to do exceedingly, exceeding abundantly above all
we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us,
unto Him be glory in the church by Jesus Christ throughout all
ages, world without end. To know the height, the depth,
the length, the breadth of this love of God beyond comprehension. It's infinite. Unfailing, conquering,
successful, glorious.
