How do Christians understand the act of giving?

Answered in 1 source

Christian giving is an act of grace motivated by love and gratitude rather than law.

Believers understand that giving is an expression of their love for Christ and acknowledgment of His grace (2 Corinthians 8:8-9). Unlike obligatory tithing, New Testament giving is characterized by voluntary and cheerful donations, arising from a willing heart (2 Corinthians 9:7). The amount is less important than the heart behind the gift; giving should be proportional to one's blessings and made with a spirit of generosity (1 Corinthians 16:2). Ultimately, Christians give as an act of worship, trusting that their contributions will further God's work in the church and the kingdom.
