How do we know God's justice and mercy coexist?

Answered in 2 sources

God’s justice and mercy coexist perfectly in the work of Christ, who satisfies the requirements of the law while providing forgiveness.

The coexistence of God's justice and mercy is most profoundly demonstrated in the atonement of Jesus Christ. As Romans 3:26 states, God is both just and the justifier. This means that God does not simply sweep sin under the rug; rather, He addresses it directly through the sacrificial death of His Son. Christ, while being completely innocent, willingly took on the guilt and punishment deserved by humanity. Thus, God's justice is satisfied because the penalty is paid, while His mercy is displayed in the offer of forgiveness to those who believe. This dual aspect of God's nature assures us that He is righteous in His judgments yet loving and gracious in His dealings with sinners.
