How do we know self-righteousness is true?

Answered in 3 sources

Self-righteousness is shown to be true through the attitudes and actions of those who trust in their own efforts rather than God's grace.

We can identify self-righteousness through its fruit: judgmental attitudes towards others and a lack of genuine humility before God. Romans 2:1 notes that those who judge others often fall into the same sins they condemn. This hypocrisy is reflective of a heart that is not fully dependent on God's grace but rather on personal accomplishments or morality. Job exemplified this as he defended his integrity while failing to recognize his own flaws. When we rely on our own righteousness, we miss the essence of the Gospel, which emphasizes that true righteousness comes only through faith in Christ.
