How do we know that being merciful is a characteristic of a believer?

Answered in 1 source

Believers are characterized by mercy because they have received God's mercy and are called to extend it to others.

In Matthew 5:7, Jesus says, 'Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.' This encapsulates the essence of the Christian life. A believer who understands the depth of God's mercy toward them naturally extends that mercy to others. This merciful disposition reveals transformation through the Spirit. Those who demonstrate mercy are recognized as true followers of Christ, reflecting His attributes to the world. The mercy given to us obliges us to act mercifully toward others, solidifying our identity as children of God.
