How do we know that Christ's love is unmerited?

Answered in 1 source

Christ's love for us is unmerited as we did not earn it or deserve it; it is given freely by His grace.

The love that Christ shows to His people is completely unmerited. As stated in John 1:11, 'He came unto His own, and His own received Him not.' This passage makes it clear that despite our rejection, God loved us. Ephesians 2:4-5 reaffirms this notion, where it says, 'But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us.' Christ's love is not based on our status or deeds but is an expression of His grace and mercy. Therefore, it highlights the miraculous nature of salvation: we are cleansed, not because we are worthy, but because He chose to love us first.
