How do we know the gift of tongues is no longer active today?

Answered in 1 source

The gift of tongues ceased after the apostles died, as it was only through their laying on of hands that these gifts were imparted.

The ability to speak in tongues, along with other miraculous gifts, was unique to the early church as recorded in the New Testament. It was specifically given through the laying on of hands by the apostles, who were the only ones possessing this authority. After the last of the apostles died, no one could transfer these gifts, which leads us to understand that claims of such gifts today are not authentic. The cessation of these gifts is supported by the lack of scriptural evidence for their continuation beyond the apostolic age.
