How do we know the voice of the Shepherd?

Answered in 1 source

The voice of the Shepherd exposes our sinful nature and leads us to find comfort and peace in Christ.

In John 10, Jesus declares, 'My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.' Recognizing the Shepherd's voice involves discerning whether it convicts and exposes our sinfulness while simultaneously offering us comfort and peace. If the message we hear leads us to focus on ourselves and our works, it is not the voice of Christ. Instead, the true Shepherd's voice brings us to a place of humility and reliance upon His grace, directing our eyes away from ourselves and towards Him as our savior and sustainer. Thus, if the voice calls us to acknowledge our transgressions while also assuring us of His forgiveness, we can be confident it is the voice of the Shepherd.
