How do we know we are in need of forgiveness?

Answered in 1 source

We know we are in need of forgiveness when we become aware of the depths of our sin and rebellion against God.

The psalmist in Psalm 130 illustrates this awareness by crying out from the depths of despair due to sin. He recognizes that he is unable to redeem himself, illustrating a state of being utterly helpless. This awareness is a work of the Holy Spirit, who convicts us of our sinfulness and points us to the need for a Savior. Just as Jonah realized his need for God's mercy while in the belly of the whale, we, too, must face our dire condition to truly grasp the necessity of forgiveness. This acknowledgment leads us to earnestly seek the Lord for His mercy and grace to bring about a true transformation in our hearts.
