How does self-righteousness affect salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Self-righteousness blinds individuals to their need for grace and can prevent genuine faith.

Self-righteousness is a perilous condition that can inhibit a person's recognition of their true spiritual state. The rich young ruler exemplifies this as he believed he had kept the commandments, not realizing the deeper spiritual requirements of the law (Luke 18:21). This self-deception often leads individuals to trust in their moral efforts rather than in Christ's redemptive work, resulting in a false sense of security. Paul underscores the danger of self-righteousness in Romans 9:31-32, reminding us that true humility and acknowledgment of our sinful nature are prerequisites to receiving God's grace. Only when one recognizes their inability to save themselves can they truly embrace Christ as their Savior.
