How does the doctrine of original sin relate to being a believer?

Answered in 1 source

Original sin highlights humanity's total depravity, underscoring the need for Christ and a true belief in Him for salvation.

The doctrine of original sin teaches that all humanity is spiritually dead and alienated from God due to the fall of Adam and Eve. This total depravity means that in themselves, people are unable to believe or please God. Thus, the need for salvation through Jesus Christ becomes apparent; as Romans 5:10 states, we were reconciled to God while we were enemies. Being a believer acknowledges this state and expresses complete reliance on Christ's work to overcome our sinfulness and restore our relationship with God. Without understanding original sin, the necessity and magnitude of grace may be understated.
