What does the Bible say about giving thanks in adversity?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible instructs us to give thanks in all circumstances, including adversity, as it reflects God's sovereignty and purpose.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:18, the Apostle Paul commands, 'In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.' This instruction encompasses both prosperity and adversity. In times of adversity, we are to reflect on God's faithfulness and the promises He has made to us. For example, we can give thanks for God's unchanging character, which assures that He will not forsake His children, as expressed in 1 Thessalonians 5:24: 'Faithful is he that calleth you, who will also do it.' Moreover, our struggles often lead us to discover God's comfort, as He is described as the 'God of all comfort' (2 Corinthians 1:3). This recognition of His support during tough times fuels our gratitude.
