What does the Bible say about man's belief in their own righteousness?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that many believe they are righteous by their own works, but ultimately God reveals the truth.

Scripture reminds us in Proverbs 18:17 that those who present their own case often seem just until their true motives are examined. This reflects the nature of man, who by default believes in his own righteousness, often highlighted by Jesus' words in Matthew 7:22-23, where many will profess their good deeds but will be met with the rejection, 'I never knew you.' The root of this belief originates from the very first deception in the Garden of Eden when Satan convinced Eve that she could become wise and godlike by disobeying God (Genesis 3:1-5).
